Your Manchester United Formation

LVG will have a tough choice when it comes to picking his striker.

Rooney's and RVP's stats are incredible.

A 4-2-2-2:

--------De Gea-------
Rafael-Jones-rojo-Shaw
----Herrera--Blind-----
-------Mata-Di Maria----
------Falcao-Rooney

Not much difference between this and the 4-3-1-2 to be honest.

No choice but to go 4 at the back now. With our squad composition it would be mental to do otherwise.

someone on another thread came up with this formation, which I think is really interesting where Blind plays. No idea if it'd work!

DE GEA
JONES ROJO
RAFAEL BLIND SHAW

HERRERA DI MARIA

MATA

ROONEY FALCAO

VP to fit in as well!

When defending, Blind sits every so slightly in front of the back 4 or even as sweeper, while Jones and or Rojo mark. Rafael and Shaw become normal full backs.

When attacking, Blind becomes the start of our attacks, getting the ball from defence, and Herrera and Di Maria have the security of him behind.

Would love this formation in a few games. Would have preferred Mata before Rooney, but since he is captain, don't see him dropped anytime soon

Or

I remember RVP used to play as a winger for Arsenal and Holland when he was young, one thing i have noticed and i feel Rvp would be far comfortable as a wide forward in comparison to Rooney, Rvp not only has the ability to go past a player with his faints and technical ability, he makes the space unbelievably well for himself to cross even when he is in wide areas, far better than Rooney lets see how they all fit in but exciting times.

Formation i would love for us to play, this formation will be a perfect balance of pace, ability, finishing and plenty of chances will be created with Herrera, Mata and Di maria supplying. its a typical 4-3-3

Rvp/Rooney Falcao Di Maria
Mata
Blind Herrera

I actually think we might play this formation again 4-3-3 just with different personnel. I think Mata would be more suited and a different kind of player than Rvp/Rooney/Falcao i suppose all three of them together starting will be too many players of same style of play and characteristics.

Rvp Falcao Rooney
Di Maria Herrera Blind

DeGea
Rojo
Carrick
Blind
Herrara
Mata
Januzaj
DiMaria
Rooney
RVP
Falcao

...actually I find the whole Falcao signing very confusing... I'm completely flabbergasted...

De Gea
Rafa Jones Rojo Shaw
Blind
Herrera Mata Di Maria
Rooney
Falcao
Rafa and Shaw still as wing back, Blind to cover the back two and fill in a an extra centre half.
Mata to play further forward in midfield three, Di Maria to drift wide and use his pace.

This exactly.

We've obviously bought Falcao as RVP is missing for a month or so.

Unless we move to 4-2-3-1 permanently, which I doubt because of our midfielders, he doesn't fit my 4-3-3, sorry. But I guess he can be used instead of Rooney from time to time. You know, he's the captain and all.

You're probably right, however I haven't seen him live and I'm not really convinced he's better than Smalling/Evans/Jones, so I didn't include him.

Yeah but you arent the manager and he was convinced enough to buy him.

What LVG will play
DDG
Rafa Evans Jones Rojo Shaw
Blind
Herrara Di Maria
Rooney Falcao
What is logically better:
DDG
Rafa Jones Rojo Shaw
Blind
Herrara Di Maria
Mata
Rooney Falcao
Just so perfectly balanced. Di Maria/Rooney/Mata/shaw/Rafa all can drop into channels or go wide to always provide width. Jones can actually hold a defence now, so once the other 3 get fit, we should be alright in defence, especially with Blind protecting them.

Got to go with this now;

--------------De Gea--------------
Rafael--Smalling--Jones--Shaw
--------------Carrick--------------
------Herrera-------Di Maria------
--------------Rooney--------------
----------RVP-------Falcao----------

Subs: Lindegaard, Evans, Rojo, Blind, Valencia, Mata, Januzaj

No room for Blind or Mata :(

Mata would still play loads of games in that system though, four players for three spots is a lovely mix. One of them will sit out starting each game but there's nothing wrong with that - for example Van Persis gets rested with Rooney moving up top and Mata to #10.

The more I think about the diamond the more I'm convinced it's just perfect for us.

So do I, everything points to LVG never going with it though :(

Agree. If we are moving to that formation then all our signings make sense. If we're not then there are going to be too many square pegs in round holes or too many excellent players sitting on the bench.

Yeah but you arent the manager and he was convinced enough to buy him.
But I’m not questioning buying him, only that I’m not sure if he’s better than those I mentioned so that’s why I picked them. I don’t know what are you getting at?

------ Rooney --- Falcao ------
------------ Mata ------------
- Di Maria -- Carrick -- Herrara -
-------------------------------
Shaw -- Rojo -- Jones -- Rafael
------------ DDG -------------

It simply HAS to be this, doesn't it?

Van Gaal has used this system before, so he does have some history with it.

Most importantly the ethos of the system is really similar to the 3-5-2 - the difference between the two is not huge. One of the centre backs plays 10 yards further forward, but the wingbacks still provide width and it still utilises two strikers and a #10.

I think it's a minimal transition and the logic for employing it would be the same. The signings are just so perfect for the diamond that I can't see van Gaal holding off on it for long. The biggest delay will probably be his own stubbornness.

Falcao ----- RvP
Rooney
DiMaria ------- Herrera
Blind
Shaw Rojo Jones Rafael
DeGea

--------------De Gea--------------
Rafael---Blackett---Rojo---Shaw
---------------Blind---------------
-------Fellaini------Herrera-------
Mata---------Falcao---------Di Maria

Damn it if only we'd signed another keeper and a RB I could of made up an XI based on players who never played under Fergie....still time Ed ;)

yep, pretty much this, if everyone is fit.

So you are picking your fantasy XI and not what the actual XI will be? Okay fair enough
I don't know on what basis do you think you know better what will be the actual formation?

Picking "fantasy XI" is exactly what we do in this thread, nobody has a clue how the manager will set us.

Now with Falcão rvp will have hard time to be in the team.
My formation:
Rafa-------smalling--------rojo-------shaw
----------------blind-----------------------
Di Maria -------mata------------- Herrera
------------------Rooney------------------
-----------------Falcão --------------

It will be interesting to see whether it is RVP who is the issue or Rooney. Falcao and RVP ought to be a better solution to our problems than Rooney who is a bit tactically inept. Both RVP and Falcao offer much more penetrative runs forward than Rooney who prefers to mainly make runs back wards or leave his position.

But it could just as well be RVP who LVG thinks hasn't done his job well enough. I doubt Falcao was brought here to be a bench option as if LVG was completely satisfied with both RVP and Rooney then there wouldn't be a need for another striker.

-----------De Gea--------------
Rafael---Evans---Rojo---Shaw
------------Blind---------------
---Herrera---------Di Maria----
Januzaj-----Falcao-----Rooney

-Di Maria in his best position
-With Januzaj and Di Maria, pace on both sides of the pitch. Di Maria on the left providing dribbling puts less attacking responsibility on Shaw.
-two goal scorers in Rooney and Falcao. Rooney playing the Madrid Ronaldo role providing goal scoring.
-3 man midfield to not get overrun in the midfield
-Mata can very well play in the Rooney or Januzaj role.

442 diamond. fits all the key players, allows di maria to excell, its the total package

DDG
Rafael CB CB Shaw
Blind/Carrick
Herrera Di Maria
Mata/Rooney

RVP/Rooney Falcao

4-4-2 diamond?

--------------DDG

Rafael--Jones---Rojo---Shaw

---------Blind/Carrick

-Herrera------------AdM
------------Mata

----Rooney/RvP---Falcao

I think this is what we should go with. It allows for di Maria and Mata to offer a wide or central option. Also, if Shaw does bomb forward, Rojo can slide across and perhaps even Blind can drop in at LCB with Herrera dropping deep until we regain our defensive shape.
