Your Manchester United Formation

4-3-3, gets the best of Di Maria, Blind, Herrera, Januzaj and Falcao. Rooney can switch with Di Maria during the game.

We can also switch easily to 4-2-3-1:

BUT Blind and Herrera are not suited to playing in two man midfield, Di Maria is good as a winger but not as good as midfielder.
Rooney is out of position in both formations, but I prefer him wide than in behind the striker.
Find a way for Mata to feature. NOW

.....................De Gea

.............Jones...........Rojo
Valencia............................Shaw

.....................Blind
.........Herrera.........Di Maria
.....................Mata/Rooney

.............Falcao.......Rooney/RVP

A diamond makes the most sense right now. It's a better fit than the 3-5-2 which our defence is struggling to get to grips with but keeps some of the same benefits.

I'd play this. Sturdy midfield and potent attack. Di Maria could possibly have more of a free role as Blind and Herrera are so good defensively? He'd just bomb it down that left hand side or come through the middle with Mata

I agree with everyone supporting the diamond formation, but you've all got the diamond in the wrong place

I prefer this one from twitter. Young and Welbeck looks out of place though

No need to over complicate things with this quality, simple 4-3-3:

Edit: Forgot to fill DDG in Goalie spot. Mata/Januzaj/Carrick all interchangeable in to that formation.

This is a serious one
RVP for Falcao (Rooney), Carrick for Blind, Blackett for Rojo and Smalling for Jones if needed. We still lack numbers in defense and midfield. And Kagawa :(
Welbeck is gone? Januzaj is a tough one, he can sub on for Di Maria, Herrera, Mata, Rooney or Falcao but none of it is his best position

So, a little overcomplicated diamond that can be transformed to a 3-5-2 without the subs if needed (Blind dropping back as a ball-playing CB, fullbacks pushing farther forward) and to 4-3-3 (Mata as a SS and Di Maria-Blind-Herrera in midfield)

Di Maria is much better in that position though, completely world class. One of the benefits of playing that system is that it gets the best out of Di Maria.

He's completely world class in a number of positions. You could still play him as part of a midfield 3 in a 4-3-3 though. I just think going forward 4-3-3 is better, not to mention it's Van Gaal's preferred system.

What do the lines mean?

Either a 4-4-2 with Di maria and Januzaj on the wings or a 4-3-1-2 with Di Maria part of the midfield 3 with Mata behind Rooney and Falcao.

All that money we spent on herera and Falcao and we dont allow them to move?

Assuming LvG continues with the 352 then this:

--------------DDG----------------
----Jones----Smalling----Rojo-----
Rafa-------------------------Shaw
--------------Blind----------------
------Herrera---------di Maria-----
-------Rooney--------Falcao------

Like most on here i'd rather a switch to 443 or 4231.

--------------DDG---------------
Rafa-------Jones--Rojo-----Shaw
-------------Blind----------------
--------Herrera------di Maria-----
Januzaj-------Falcao------Rooney

Plenty of room for experimenting, RvP could come in for Falcao, Carrick in for Rooney or Januzaj and switch di Maria to the left wing, Mata could be used in a number of positions as could Welbeck. Young and Valencia should only be used (starting that is) when it's absolutely necessary. Fellaini and Cleverley back ups along with some of the kids.

I don't think he is really but I suppose it depends on your definition of completely world class.

He's not as good as someone like Bale on the wings, but as an attacking central midfielder he's arguably the best in the world right now. Last season he arguably outshone Ronaldo and performed with a consistency I've haven't seen from him on the wing. I think he's much better as a midfielder.

He actually played as a midfielder on the left of a diamond at Benfica, so he has history with that role. I think it's perfect for him.

Not a fan of 3-5-2 at all, so if I was a Utd fan this is what I'd want to see (assuming players are fit):

--------------De Gea---------------
Rafael----Jones----Rojo-----Shaw
----------------Blind---------------
--------Herrera------di Maria-----
Januzaj-------Falcao------Rooney

or

--------------De Gea---------------
Rafael----Jones----Rojo-----Shaw
---------Herrera-----Blind---------
---Januzaj---Mata--Di Maria------
--------------Falcao----------------

Mata's lack of running is covered by Januzaj and Di Maria IMO, and he is probably a better no. 10 than Rooney based on current form. That team looks pretty well balanced to me and should be more than adequate to get 4th spot, especially given Arsenal's lack of activity (who I originally thought would finish in top 4, no question). Not to mention the fact that you have no European football and now no league cup fixtures.... no excuses really not to get top4 at least with that. Defence still looks fairly weak and there isn't as much quality in midfield as Chelsea/City but your offensive options are among the best in the world...

A fit RVP won't get demoted to the bench, he's competing against the captain and another expensive signing but he's still class and he will give them both a run for their money.

The problem with Rooney in any of these formations is that he's so indisciplined positionally, that he'll end up wandering into other areas to get involved, thereby upsetting any balance. I don't really see any formation in which he's the answer for a given position, especially now with Falcao arriving, but being the captain he's going to feature regardless of merit.

Can't wait until the next game. Teams are gonna fear us again with our six new additions

De Gea
Rafael Jones Rojo Shaw
Herrera Blind Di Maria
Mata Falcao Januzaj

or

De Gea
Rafael Jones Rojo Shaw
Blind
Herrera Di Maria
Mata
Rooney Falcao

There's no way rooney wont be picked.

Whichever formation anyone has picked it just shows there is no way we can fit in these players in the same side:

Rvp
falcao
mata
rooney
ADM

Somethings gotta give. Probably rvp's knee to be fair

I think Di Maria and Januzaj have to be in the starting line up. We need pace.

De Gea
Rafael Jones Rojo Shaw
Blind/Carrick
Herrera --------- Di Maria
Mata
Rooney Falcao/RvP
Think that would be our best bet for now. It would see our best players playing in their best positions and would restore the back four our defenders are clearly more comfortable with.

De Gea
Rafael-Jones-Rojo-Shaw
Blind
Herrera-Di Maria
Mata
Falcao-Rooney

Even with his current donkey touch? van Gaal benched Rivaldo at a time when he was considered the best player in the world, he won't hesitate to bench Rooney.

4-3-3
De Gea

4-1-2-1-2

Yep, he's such a hindrance. And he's not like 2008 Rooney who would roam to devastating effect . This one just slows it all down and gets in people's way.

Ideally Rooney would be left out. That wont happen though, it gives Van Persie time to fully recover though.
Januzaj to fill in at any point.

Absolutely crazy that we could line up that team. If you had told me that in May I would have assumed you were stark raving mad! To think that some people aren't satisfied as of yet either.

 you might have an issue with that one

Feel sorry for QPR next game.

Unless we move to 4-2-3-1 permanently, which I doubt because of our midfielders, he doesn't fit my 4-3-3, sorry. But I guess he can be used instead of Rooney from time to time. You know, he's the captain and all.

LvG didnt buy a left footed CB to sit him on the bench. Rojo will play.
You're probably right, however I haven't seen him live and I'm not really convinced he's better than Smalling/Evans/Jones, so I didn't include him.
