Just curious who you personally wanted in the hot seat these last few tumultuous years?

My choices were:

2013: Mourinho
2014: Klopp
2016: Guardiola

Klopp every year until this one, since Guardiola has seemed impossible to get post-Fergie.

This year I rather have Pochettino over Mourinho.

As an Arsenal fan, definitely FSW. The meltdown this would cause would be amazing. About as likely as me taking over though.

Poch is the one I'd hate to see at United most right now. He's got Spurs playing some really good football, if he can replicate that with the players United have at their disposal it could get pretty damn good.

Jurgen Klopp for 2013 and 2014.
LVG for 2015-16
For 2016, any of Pochettino / Allegri / Conte, but not Mou.

2013 - Mourinho
2014 - Was Klopp even available in 2014 summer? Didn't he sign a contract extension? Otherwise I was quite happy with experienced coach like LvG. I would have again taken Mourinho above anyone but he wasn't going to be available in 2014.
2016 - Mourinho

2013: Mourinho
2014: Klopp
2015: Ancelotti/Pep

Availability taken into consideration for each year, of course. If it's a pick of any manager regardless of current availability, then it'd be Ancelotti all the way, with Mourinho a close 2nd and Pep distant third.

Whichever of the top bosses looked realistically available. Wanted Mourinho initially, then he went to Chelsea and Moyes took us down a hole. Klopp left BVB and I wanted him, but he joined Liverpool. With LVG doing poorly, Mourinho was sacked and I immediately wanted him to take over. We stuck with LVG, then Pep said he was leaving and I wanted him. With him at City and Mourinho still up for grabs, he's now my choice.

Basically I'm a managerial whore.

Mourinho when SAF retired, Klopp when Moyes was told to do one. Then Mourinho again as everyone knew where Pep has been heading for over a year now.

2013: Pep Guardiola
2014: Carlo Ancelotti
2015: Carlo Ancelotti
2016: Mourinho

2013: Mourinho, Pep, or Klopp
2014: Mourinho or Pep
2015: Mourinho or Pep
2016: Mourinho or....oh ok

2013 - a big name manager with plenty of top club experience and silverware to show life goes on and update any backroom stuff where we were falling behind. Mourinho, Ancelotti - someone off that shelf, maybe Klopp if we wanted a longterm appointment. My dark horse candidate if we wanted someone quiet was Pellegrini.

2014 - same, except most of the top dogs looked locked in their clubs. LvG looked like a reasonable choice from the available list.

2013: Mourinho
2014: Anyone but Moyes (!)
2016: Mourinho/Poch.

To be fair, just before this season kicked off, the majority of us were convinced Mourinho was the best manager in world football, looking as if he could well be about to start a dynasty at Chelsea, cursing our board for missing out on him in 2013.
His stock has fallen so far in 6months that it all seems a distant memory now, but Chelsea's loss will be our gain from next season.

14/15: Klopp
15/16: Ancelotti
16/17: (1) Guardiola, (2) Mourinho

2013: Moyes
2014: Van Gaal
2016: Giggs

Mourinho when SAF left, had a bit of a meltdown when we got Moyes, then hoped Klopp would have a year off and come in during summer and right now I want Mourinho again.

Guardiola
Ancelotti
Guardiola

2013 - Mourinho
2014 - Ancelotti/van Gaal
2016 - Mourinho

2013/14: Mourinho
2014/15: Didn't really have a favourite candidate from the available choices, just wanted Moyes gone
2015/16: Ancelotti before he went to Bayern - Guardiola before he went to City - Mourinho

Guardiola
Klopp
Guardiola

Since Guardiola isn't happening, I'm up for "whoever" amongst the better candidates.
(which excludes Ryan Giggs & other sentimental choices)

2013/2014: Pellegrini
2014/2015: Giggs
2016/----- : Ancelotti

2013: Moyes
2014: Van Gaal
2016: Giggs

A seat on the board is on the cards for you. :p

I can't mention a favourite for every year, because Moyes was appointed a day after Fergie announce his retirement and it was clear LVG was getting the job when Moyes was sacked.

I did, however, see Mourinho as the best man to replace Fergie in the years prior to his retirement and still in 2013. This year? Being human and all, I have to admit that with the way Bayern are playing and what happened at Chelsea, I would have taken Guardiula. But I'd be delighted with Mourinho and he's by far my first choice now.

It was always Klopp for me until he went to Liverpool, but I'm glad I got to find out the amusing way that once you get past the charisma, he's no better than Brendan Rodgers.

2013: Mourinho or Ancelotti.

Despite his defensive tactics in big games, Mourinho's direct/counter attacking style would suit our squad best. And instead of just "steadying the ship", he would have used our resources and his good name, as a manager who delivers silverware, to attract two or three world class players who would possibly take our team to a whole new level. A CB to partner Smalling, a midfielder to accompany Carrick and a world class winger.

Ancelotti, on the other hand, has a unique way of adjusting his tactics/formations to the players he has at his disposal. That's his biggest strength as a manager and it would have been really interesting to see what he would have done with our squad at the time and what players he would have tried to bring in.

2014: Didn't really have the time to think about it since it all happened way too fast.

2016: Guardiola/Mourinho. He looked like the best option to go forward after LvG. The opinions about how much we have progressed as a possession based side vary on this forum but the truth is that the players are training and learning how to play in a particular way for almost two seasons now. As Mourinho in 2013, Guardiola seemed like the man whose ideas and ability to get top class footballers could potentially lead the club to better days.

But since he's not only gone but he is also going to City, i'd go with Mourinho. City are in a much better shape than us for quite some time now, they've got loads of cash to spend and Pep guarantees them that they'll be competing for all major honours for the next three seasons.

We need to match that and get back on track. Mourinho is our safest bet and, since Guardiola is gone, we should be thankful that he's available and willing to get the job. City are already fired up for next season, Chelsea are expected to get a top class manager and spend big too, Wenger will probably add one more experienced top player to his first team and Liverpool will try to get Klopp the players he needs.

With all respect to Giggs, Pochettino or anyone else, i don't think they're ready for this kind of challenge yet. And, truth be told, we have already wasted too much time with Moyes and LvG. The game has changed and we don't have a money making machine like City or Chelsea. We can still compete with them financially because of our success all these years. There's too much at stake and before any rebuilding or any planning for longevity this club needs to feel alive and kicking again.

Without the benefit on hindsight:

2013: José Mourinho - proven winner, experienced in the league, gravitas and winning mentality to fill the void left by Fergie. Followed by Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola - in that specific order. Basically, big name managers with good leadership credentials, and title winning experience - not just domestically, but in the Champions League. Preferred José and Carlo because they were/ are used to handling a big club in England, and they're more pragmatic - like Fergie, compared with Pep - who's more of a purist and burns himself out because of his intensive methods. In terms of what was wanted, Moyes didn't match any of those qualities.

2014: Van Gaal was the best choice, all things considered - keep in mind that Klopp wasn't going to leave Borussia Dortmund before the expiration of his contract, and he parted ways with the club only after the meltdown. Hasn't worked out so well thus far, but the consensus opinion was that he would build a good team and provide some sort of structure to the squad which would pay dividends in the future - and with good reason. Unfortunately, he's underperformed all across the board, and will likely leave the squad in a disjointed state.

2015/ 2016: Ideally, we should've started negotiations with Carlo once he was sacked by Real Madrid. He fits the bill almost perfectly, we wanted him after Moyes was let go, and he is a superior manager to Van Gaal - said as much in the Van Gaal extension thread. Unfortunately, United were enamored with Van Gaal's foundations when there weren't enough tangible signs of progress; and Bayern were super decisive, and Pep is joining City. José Mourinho is the only remaining candidate out of the traditional Big 3, and as luck would have it - he's currently unemployed. Fully expect the club to make an arse out of a perfect storm though. That's been our modus operandi in recent seasons. Might sound harsh, but it is what it is. José is the easy choice coinciding with the right choice - so to speak, especially in terms of what we need at this moment in time, IMO of course. But nah, let's overlook one of the 3 greatest managers in the last 20 seasons because he doesn't meet every single criteria in our exhaustive list - even the rudimentary ones.

2013: Moyes
2014: Gary Neville
2015: Gary Neville
2016: Vidic
