Serious question, are people generally happy with Lukaku then, do you rate him? I remember when we signed Fellaini I got panned for slating his first touch and passing ability. To me he is the striking equivalent. Of course he should be the top scored playing up front.....£75m for a best of a human being that cant actually hold the ball up and has the first touch of a player several leagues below. With his back to goal he is absolutely abysmal. His work rate and movement around the area is good, he is good in the air and a decent finisher. Personally I would far rather have Martial up front, a fantastic talent who we have wasted on the wing for the majority of his time with us. He has had his problems off the field and consistency wise for us, he is young though. But he is a player I think we will lose and be talking about in a few years of how did we let him get away.

think Lukaku is ideal v the smaller clubs but certainly would prefer a Rashford up front in the bigger games if honest, i would say i have seen an improvement in the Lukaku 1st touch and hold up play since that start of the season so clearly they are working on it but still needs to improve big style. but having spent big on him i think we will defo have him for the next couple of seasons here.

That's best case scenario really. I would like to think Herrera and Martial could become first-teamers but don't think it's very likely, especially for the latter. As long as players like Shaw, Pereira and Martial don't get sold I think I'll cope though.

I think Darmian, Lindelof and Fellaini should all definitely go but I expect Lindelof will survive the cull on the basis of it being his first season with Blind taking his place.

It's somewhat difficult to reconcile realistic with ideal IMO; for instance, an ideal starting XI for me next season would involve Martial, but how realistic would that be considering (a) that José will very likely still be the manager next season, (b) José would likely only see Martial as a depth player, not as a starter, and (c) Martial may not even be at the club next season.

I'm going to focus on the "realistic" constraint first as opposed to the "ideal" constraint.

Needs:
RB - Valencia will be 33 before the start of the 2018/2019 season, plus a lack of depth behind him.
LB - Young will also be 33 before the start of next season, plus we also lack depth at LB.
CDM - Matic will be 30 before the start of the season, and we will be lacking depth in the wake of Carrick's retirement.
CM - Herrera will be 29 before the start of the season; IMO, his playing style is one which will not age well. Could also buy an improvement on Herrera.
RW - Lack of quality here

Realistic Options:
RB - Odriozola
LB - Alex Sandro
CDM - Torreira (In a vacuum, Jorginho is the best option, but would be a waste of his abilities to play under a José side)
CM - Seri
RW - Cengiz Under (I think Roma may have some problems with FFP; makes them somewhat vulnerable in terms of selling good players)

And the idea that we should sell Rojo and Blind, while keeping Shaw?
Rojo and Blind have each put in more good performances than Shaw, over the last few years.
And let's not forget that Shaw is either injured, unfit to play, fat or all 3? On what basis would anybody in the right mind want to keep Shaw? He is into the final year of his contract this Summer and we need to off-load him. If lucky, we might get £10M, though more likely it will be closer to the £5M. The guy just doesn't seem keen on being a pro footballer.

Our current set isn't perfect by any means, and like you pointed out, our distribution and tempo could be better considering José had the likes of Carvalho, Lúcio, Ramos at previous clubs — so there's definite room for improvement as regards personnel, but it's not a super-pressing need in relative terms in a tricky World Cup market, and I'd like to see more of Lindelöf before making a big signing. If he doesn't pan out as a defensive distributor by the second half of next season, then we can move for someone like maybe Škriniar — who's been superb this season and is 6 years younger than Alderweireld while offering a similar overall skill set in possession:

Yeah I'm along the same lines personally but with all the noise and fuss Mourinho has kicked up over it I can't see it happening. I'm most concerned about our RW as again he seems to be happy with it, despite it quite obviously lacking.

Anyway I think the outs will be Carrick (retirement), Fellaini (free), Darmian, Blind, Martial and Shaw. Those combined will probably fetch us 80m so can see a summer transfer kitty of around 200m.

Alderweireld and Sandro seem realistic and perhaps a right back (Meunier). I think if Martial goes we'll end up getting someone of quality up the field if not then I think we'll get a midfielder or maybe both.

I'm going by the value according to the most reports, Sure Kroos or Verrarti can be valued in the range of 80-120m especially with Verrarti being younger. If we add a couple of tens million, I'm going to exclude David Neres. I don't think that would be a problem.
