In the World Cup I liked him a lot. Not easy for a CB to score three goals.He has leadership and charisma. He looks like a player for many years but depending on the style.
A friend culé says that he is not worth for Barsa, because he is too big and heavy and has no waist for a team with the defense so advanced.
Perhaps with another tactic- the one of United for example-he can squeeze other qualities.

Football has moved on since then, & clubs have a very good idea of all major players & their abilities, & even minor ones. Where is the interest from other big clubs? Anyway it won't matter even if we sign him, as by the end of the season Jones & Smalling will still be first choice pairing at the back.
I don't see queues for Toby or Harry from the likes of Barca, Madrid, Bayern, Juve, or Chelsea. Must they also be rubbish?

You know those players who the likes of Inter, Spurs, Napoli, Dortmund etc get for a reasonable price, and we always say "why weren't we in for this guy?"

Im still confused why we are interested in a player who made just 4 starts for Barcelona in the first place. Can you imagine if Real was interested in our Blind or Rojo?
Don't get me wrong, I can't blame Mou if our incompetent club has to dig down his list to bring a player. The alternative would have been for him to spare the club some humiliation, say that 'he's happy with the squad' or 'there's no value' and then reap the consequences of it. What I do wonder though is, if we're truly the biggest club in the world then why on earth are we digging in Barcelona's and Stoke's dustbin?

That's probably Abdou Diallo for Dortmund.
It would be insane. They signed him for £10m in January, he didn't do well and they want rid, and now supposedly he would cost £30m.
It's like if someone said we could get £90m for Lindelof because he 'had a good world cup'.
Mind you it's still not as ridiculous as the Rebic story. Frankfurt signed him for £2m this summer, and hacks claimed we would buy him for £50m a couple of months later!

And yes I can tbh, Barcelona bought Paulinho who was flogged from Spurs and doing nothing in China.
Mina at least is being bought off the back of a very good world Cup showing (playing more than he did under Barcelona?) and is 23.

He'd be the most underwhelming signing we've made since Fellaini. Just can't understand the point in signing a defender unless he's going to be a significant improvement.
Another forum member posted that Mina had been one of the best defenders in the Brazilian league. So, we may have scouted him there until Barcelona came in for him.

No. For a number of reasons
How many players move between Bayern, Madrid, Barca, Juve, Us etc?
The marginal few (I can think of maybe 6 off the top of my head - and those are usually the best players in the world in their position at the time)
If they're good, then they'll stay at the bigger club for the foreseeable. Once they are no longer good enough/wanted anymore then they'll be flogged elsewhere to a club with lower expectations and aren't a direct rival to the big club in the first place.
If they are good then they attract the big guns irrespective whether they are pushed away from their current club or not. You didn't see the likes of Beckham, RVN, Roby Baggio, ADM (while at Real), James and co moving to Wolves or some mickey mouse league.

In that case it would be the manager's fault. However I can't really blame it on the manager if his Plan D doesn't work. We are supposed to be the biggest club in the world. Its about feckin time we act like one.

It's not representative of every transfer because every year Madrid, Bayern, Juve all move players on to the equivalent of 'mickey mouse' clubs too.
Plus, some of our greatest squad players we've had over the years wouldn't have gotten a sniff from the biggest clubs in the world - but for us they performed very well.
Also, Toby expressed his wishes clearly that he wants to move out from Spurs, so I'm not buying that our first choice targets weren't attainable.

It doesn't really prove anything. Mina is closer to the likes of Blind and Rojo then to the likes of ADM or James. You don't see the likes of Blind or Rojo joining Real or Bayern don't you?
Also we tend to hype our 'squad players' alot. The OSheas, the Phil Nevs and the Fortunes shouldn't have been anywhere near to our side. They should thank SAF for being able to take some Ladas, mix them around some ferraris and make it work just the same.
This has been going on long before Mourinho. We've seen SAF being forced to systematically replace his stars with the likes of Young, Valencia, Smalling and co. We've seen Moyes lamenting at our inability to bring top talent and we've seen all our past 4 managers being reduced to use their contacts and bring players they can personally influence to bring to the club (SAF, EPL talent, Moyes brought Fellaini, LVG brought Blind, Bastian and Valdes and Mou brought Matic, Dalot from Porto and will probably try to bring Willian as well) rather then go for the real stuff. I don't mind going hard on managers. I did it with SAF even though I think he's the most important person United had ever had. Yet I find it difficult to criticise the managers if they are being forced to resort to their 4th-5th choice option.
You have a very narrow minded view of what a squad should look like. Key word being squad.
No team in the world is filled with world class players - the whole point of having a squad is so that the best players have teammates who are willing to do the jobs that the best talent aren't able to do to provide balance.

No one is expecting a team of world class players. However you might not notice but this team is seriously devoid of talent. A yet another squad player wont cut it.
But you would agree that we are in a position where we need to add players at the top of the order, not at the bottom. We already have squad players, particularly in central defense.

I would never say we shouldn't add players at the top of the order. But Toby for £60m isn't a worthwhile investment, when we can wait 6 months and get him for £25m.
Well if he went to Barcelona it means they must have saw something with his ball playing ability otherwise they wouldn't go for him. Him not adapting as expected can happen but the quality might still be there.
It looks like we tried for Maguire and Alderweireld this summer but the price tags were extortionate so we rightly backed off.

Rio had more talent in his left toe then all our combined CBs put together. How that works for you?
