I doubt it. At best you'd have both.

I'm not saying it wouldn't sway some people but it wouldn't sway enough. Xbox wouldn't suddenly become the market leader.
It doesn't have to but an improvement in that aspect would be good right? Right?

I don't care. It'll happen naturally if they get their releases right though yeah. Let's see how the summer event goes and starfield looks. They've put huge pressure on Starfield delivering which I think is already difficult considering half the audience want Skyrim/Fallout in space and half want something new and fresh.

But just that alone wouldn't be enough anyway as he says. But if they could land something like Hellblade 2 this year alongside that and Forza, it could go some way to start turning some perceptions. I think they'd need to sustain that quality and quantity for 2-3 years minimum to start moving the needle (and even then it'll be small)

There's brand loyalty for sure, but it's also a bit of an excuse. He owns up to mistakes with first party games, but then blames people just buying into what they know. The loyalty and trust comes from years of releasing quality exclusives. MS were never going to turn it around in one generation but they do need to start gaining traction.

It’s quite remarkable how they turned what began as a relatively successful launch into this current mess. Between superb subscription service, affordable unit in Series S, a cool looking lineup of future games and much less issues with supply than Sony faced they could have turned this into a much more successful generation but it all went downhill spectacularly since. Series S now struggles to run games at a decent level, the cool looking lineup has turned into endless delays, disappointments and cancellations and the subscription service has basically been neglected for the last six months (ever since they missed that second announcement in December or January they have basically been adding a few new games here and there but nowhere near the quality or quantity of before).

They sort of did the same with 360 and One but it least took another generation to undo whatever they did right with 360.

Even if it’s impossible for them to win globally, they have previously been in good position to win US and follow Sony quite closely in Europe. They will probably get hammered even in US now.

Starfield is a massive issue for them as well. The game is almost certain to be a huge buggy mess at launch, which they can’t afford, but they also cannot afford to delay it again (though I still reckon it won’t come out this year).

He is wrong when he says great games won’t change things

if Starfield, Hellblade, Fable and another could of games all come out to top reviews and win game of the year awards people will take notice.
They just don't have the consoles on the shelves so great games are not going to sell more consoles.

This is a blatant lie. I've seen Series X on shelves regularly since launch and they've been far more readily available than Switches and PS5s.

No doubt. You snap up all the PS5s and Switchs to bathe in after your daily self punishment sessions.

https://www.gamesradar.com/buy-xbox-series-x-stock-updates/#:~:text=Why was the Xbox Series, phones due to the pandemic.
After two-plus years of stock shortages, Microsoft is more committed than ever to making sure store shelves – be that digital or real – are filled with Xbox Series X consoles. It's not quite up to what it could have been pre-pandemic, but it's arguably better than it has been since the gaming machine's launch

It's very different in the UK where we're seeing a steady stream of consoles available at Amazon(opens in new tab) with no invitation needed. Just add to your basket and away you go. Regardless. nothing is certain with Xbox Series X restocks. One minute there's a big supply, the next all gone. To keep up with all the latest Xbox Series X restock updates, head below for the latest information.
You can get the console but they are still selling out with the game situation as it is.

He's right. And it is the first time he's said it, in the past he's been more ambitious in wanting to be the number 1 leading console but they haven't a chance (and I've said that here loads though Lambs will no doubt pretend this is new).

Brand loyalty to Playstation is way too strong to overcome without a disaster from Sony. The PS3 caught upto the Xbox 360 despite Xbox having a huge head start, way more availability, being a lot cheaper, leading on exclusives at least for the first half of the gen etc.etc. and he's clearly right that people are increasingly locked into ecosystems that they are investing in either digital purchases.

That doesn't mean they can't grow 2nd console sales though and have bigger mindshare in the US.

If Xbox this gen had dualsense, God of War 2, Horizon 2, R&C, Demon Souls whilst PS had gamepass and Halo; PS5 would still be the leading console by some distance.

If you have something serious to say, tag me. You have always made that excuse, yes. But you are also the worst person on here for revisionism with past discussions about this stuff.

I told you towards the end of the 360 gen the way it was going, before the boner years, and all during this generation too the problem MS had and continue to have. It's why they attempted to sell off the division and probably still would now. That hasn't changed, it's the same thing they keep doing which is a shame to me but also angers me as it's not rocket science the mistakes they continue to make.

And you keep doing the same "next gen 'la!" routine like you've done every single generation. Now you are talking about cloud/apps and all that as if it's some big saviour, ignoring the likely hood of yet another round of hardware (at least) to come in the mean time. Even with the Activision deal, one of the very things that they need to do to cement this saviour routine you expect, you are now downplaying it even though that directly contradicts your stance.

Phil coming out with the old "woe ist me" shit shouldn't be applauded by Xbox fans nor gamers in general. We need a strong Xbox division, not one that is headed by people who just will not learn nor understand. And that's the problem, especially with American companies in gaming, it's the arrogance and the fact that the people at the top (not necessarily Phil himself, though you have to wonder just how much clout he actually has) are just not gamers nor do they understand it.

I feel increasingly like we need a different board for the Series S because the benefits of that console - namely its cheap price and gamepass - are still there. It's a great little machine.

The X being the flagship model is where the problems are due to a lack of big hitters. Then again, I also have no idea why people bought one instead of a PS5 if that's what you wanted.

I think there's a general acceptance that the S will eventually become an albatross around MS neck.

It's a nice little machine for it's main purpose; a cheap entry level way to get casual or lapsed gamers into GP.

The issue MS have created for themselves is insisting there is parity between game releases for the S and the X. As games become more "next gen" MS surely have to revise that commitment to having their games be available on both.

That's fair. I think when that does happen I'll look towards buying a PS5 as currently the X doesn't offer close to enough for the upgrade.

That's a damning indictment though. The plan for MS was for gamers with the S to upgrade to the X, not jump over to the competitor.

So is Hellblade an Xbox exclusive? The first one was one of the most interesting games I've played in years, despite fairly limited gameplay. The trailer for the second one is incredible. I'm sure it was meant to come out last year

But the PS3 eventually started doing well because of the games - IIRC sales weren’t as high as anticipated because of a) a ridiculously high price and b) a very poor game offering for the first year or so.

I opt for PS/Nintendo each generation because of the game output, not because of some misplaced loyalty to Sony. MS struggles because it just doesn’t have the output in terms of its game offerings. You seem to want to blame everything else other than the thing that matters most!

True but MS can get tae feck. I've always been a leaper as I find tech companies only incentivise when their market share is lower. That's often the best time to hop on the bus and party down.

The best thing for gamers IMO would be Starfield and perhaps Fable being a smash hit and more people moving over to Xbox, which would hopefully prompt Sony to consider their own priorities and make their console even better. We can see already how the threat of gamepass - as hollow as we want to consider that - put them into a position where they had to offer an alternative subscription service. I frankly don't think that would have happened otherwise but it's good it did.

Yep, we need strong competition to drive forward.

The S is excellent for people that aren’t weirdly passionate about computer games on forums and aren’t bothered about fidelity and fps.

It’s not going to hold anything back other than performance for people on the S. That’s just the edgy angle from those desperate to denigrate. Considering there are already performance options on most games - zero problem. I’d be more concerned about third party devs pumping out mediocrity. That’s what going to hold back this gen.

What is wrong with you?

How?

Had some great games on it tbf. Though I wasn’t a huge fan of the Sega Saturn.

PS1/SNES was a dream combo.

Partially tongue-in-cheek, partially true.

The version of Windows CE and Directx MS made for it never worked properly, and they never supported developers. So you had a super expensive to produce and powerful machine running games that ran like modern console to PC ports run. Add to that MS were already developing the Xbox behind closed doors at that point and there were plenty of grumbling among developers at the time that whilst maybe not deliberate sabotage, Gates definitely didn't want them to rush to fix anything. He then, when the Dreamcast was almost dead, refused to allow the DC games to be put on the Xbox to help Sega recoup some costs (after agreeing to no rival hardware in return).

Basically it's another example of Gates crushing the competition in the good ol' days.

I don't tag you because it's tiring to discuss with someone who's aim in every post is to demonstrate how much more they know than anyone else and how they knew all along and told everyone before but nobody listened.

No I agree completely. The brand loyalty is deserved for Sony and Nintendo. I'm just saying 1 or even a few games can't undo that. They need to sustain quality and quantity for years to start moving the needle and even then its unlikely to be people moving from PS to Xbox but instead an increased share of new customers as the gaming pie grows and also an increase in second (or third) console owners.

Not being able to be the market leader doesn't mean there isn't a need for more good games. That's why I don't have concerns with him saying that and don't see it being an issue.

You said I'd try to say you didn't say something.

And you only think that's my aim because you refuse to ever learn. Instead you pop up right after Phil opens his mouth and go on another one of your missions to gloss over the problems, even to the point of what the fanboys on twitter are doing and putting the blame for Redfall being forced out on Arkane.

What is actually tiring is people like you who defend all they do and buy into it regardless, which is helping hold it back. Funny though that you cannot answer my points once again.

You seem to forget the OG Xbox, the 360 and all the money and effort that went into those...And you don't have a concern with the way he's admitting they fecked it again? Yet you think in a couple of gens time they'll magically get it right when they show nothing even close to that at the moment, and the one thing they are publicly trying at huge expense you think doesn't really matter?

Nothing adds up.

Whilst we agree they don't need to be top dogs, what you don't seem to understand is that's exactly what they were trying to be. It was only during development of the boner that they changed tack when they didn't sell the division (went cheaper basically). With the attempted purchase of Activision they are definitely trying to secure top dog status again down the line. It's completely disingenuous to act and claim otherwise, and it's not great to act like old Phil is talking straight when he is in charge whilst they are going backwards.

What are you talking about I said there's no excuse for MS to let it release in that state, that they've found no balance in studio management and that they seem to have been distracted by Activision deal which yes I don't think is necessary to being able to produce great first party output considering they already have 25 studios.

#projectglossover

Activision isn't about the studios as such though, you know that. Do you even know why it was blocked?

Next year will be the year, next gen will be the gen. Before this gen, before the last, you couldn't stop saying about how MS have got it right, will sort the problems, so much is coming...Praising Phil for telling it straight is laughable, but you know that too. The fact MS haven't changed in fact they have got worse, and the likes of Phil and yourself have u-turned on all the bluster now is just all so predictable.

The Xbox division needs a clear out at the top, they have been terrible for a long time and just don't know how to understand games nor the development cycle.

All people want are the games, no one really gives a shit about all the rest of it. If they can't do that, then "brand loyalty" becomes something that means very little to all but the most dedicated.

I know the reasons they gave. I have other opinions on the real reasons it was blocked but I wont get into that here.

When did I praise Phil sorry? Just talking out of your arse as per.

I haven't said next year or next gen will be our year. I've been saying the opposite and that only if they do x, y, z can they even be part of the conversation nevermind anything else. That's the reality of where they're at.

Do you go into every United thread hounding people who say United have problems or are a bit shit because at some point in time they had some hope but your pessimistic arse always knew best.

I bet your wife can't complain about petrol prices without you reminding her that she voted for tories 15 years ago and you told her then and every day since how she'd live to regret that decision. Oh and now she's u-turning because the shit has hit the fan and she really is nothing more than bluster.

 I love annoying you!

In my defence I'm in a bit of a mood because I'm stuck at a family event and I've just started Returnal and am in to it, so now I've got the gaming withdrawal shakes AND I've got to admit to Elvis he is right about it. And no one needs that!

But you do always say next gen/next year and bang on about what's coming.

Its all you can say about them really isn't it. They're stuck on square one of building a library. They need to get it right every year for about 5 years to be relevant. Even when they have gotten it right its hard to see much sequel potential.
Check out the returnal thread when you get a chance. Theres a post in there about changing a few options that make it a lot better.

For all the passion around Xbox bollocksing it, it’s funny that I can still play 99% of games to the same standard as the other console. People here seem to conveniently forget that part when they’re getting all passionate with their denigration.

Returnal is fantastic, my favourite game this gen. Enjoy!

Wasn't Redfall made by the Deathloop team? man, that game was the most overrated game i've played in years. Couldn't believe it reviewed so well.

Same devs but diff team. It was the team who made Prey. The Deathloop team are the ones who made Dishonoured.

Both the X and S are fantastic machines in their own right in terms of design and build. They should never have cheaped out on the S' memory though, but all in all they are so much better than the last gen machines.

Early days, but I think I'll definitely get in to this one. I do have some minor quibbles about the ADS and shooting in general, but this is more about the movement anyway. And I'm not sure what was different on launch, but the amount of teleports and the way the game works, why were people calling it unfair and wanted checkpoints?

Anyway I'm eager to play more, which is rare of late.

It's funny, for all the praise Prey got, I preferred Dishonored. That's probably because I think System Shock 2 is one of the best games ever made (certainly for atmosphere) and I found Prey too sterile compared despite clearly taking a lot of inspiration from it.

I think Arkane's reputation is a little over blown, but I like them and at least they used to try and their stuff was still different. No idea what Redfall was supposed to be all along though, it's so weirdly unfocused.

There were some complaints about the lack of save and quit, as runs could be pretty long and someone else might want to use the PS5. That's more a convenience thing and less about fairness though.

Anyway, brilliant game. If you haven't done it already, try switching sprint to always on in settings. Was a game changer for me, but might not work for everyone.
