How many of you would go for the 250 dollar one though? A console is bought for the next 5-7 years and 4K is now pretty much everywhere.
I'd consider it, but will ultimately buy the proper one instead.

I’d consider it as a secondary console alongside my PS5 but I wouldn’t downgrade. It’s sort of a half step towards being next gen without actually being next gen.How many of you would go for the 250 dollar one though? A console is bought for the next 5-7 years and 4K is now pretty much everywhere.
It isn’t a next gen console. Is the Series S worth it even at £250? You’d want a noticeable power difference for next gen.
Nah they are different. The Xbox S is kind of like a cheap halfway step into next gen so won’t boast the same power as Xbox X of the PS5 and won’t run 4K etc. The digital PS5 is still just as powerful as the one with the disk drive, it will just be cheaper as Sony gets to control the digital games marketplace.Do is the 250 version essentially like yhe digital only version of the PS5?
This comes out a week after my bday and at that price it's gonna be hard to resist buying one.
What’s the point then? Why’s it being released the same time as the Series X?It isn’t a next gen console.
According to the Steam hardware survey only 2% on PC players game at 4K. 1080p and lower makes up over 85% of PC players. How many of you would go for the 250 dollar one though? A console is bought for the next 5-7 years and 4K is now pretty much everywhere.

I’d only contemplate getting the £250 version if you aren’t interested in 4K and just want a cheap entry point to play some casual games.
Totally different to console though.According to the Steam hardware survey only 2% on PC players game at 4K. 1080p and lower makes up over 85% of PC players.

I’d assume MS are trying to tempt more casual gamers. As it’s digital only they’ll be less inclined to switch consoles in the future. Sensible move but I’m not sure it’s a particularly good move for the industry. What’s the point then? Why’s it being released the same time as the Series X?
It is a next-gen console. It will play the latest games for the next 6-7 yearsWhat’s the point then? Why’s it being released the same time as the Series X?
I mean, it depends on how you look at it. Games will still look better on PC if you have a decent rig and hit far higher frame rates, which is more important than ever before with high refresh monitors becoming so popular. Is that really so different to how it was seven years ago when the PS4/XBONE came out?Of course it is. Despite a vocal minority parttoting the same PC masterrace BS, this generation will be the closest consoles have been to PC gaming.
PC will always have the edge but to run a rig that plays 4k or eventually 8k you need to be investing hundreds, if not thousands a year to keep up with the new tech.
It's got the same CPU and RAM as the Series X, which means the Series S is more powerful than the PS5 in those areas. It isn’t a next gen console.
But it has the same power as the Xbox One X? Will games look anywhere near as good as on the Xbox Series X on it or what?It is a next-gen console. It will play the latest games for the next 6-7 years

I don't really see it as a competition, for lying on the couch consoles are clearly the better option but if you want to get the most out of a game, especially on multiplayer, PC is still going to be the #1 option. I'm a fan of both, personally.
Two Point Hospital is on Game Pass. It’s basically the same thing. If they announced a remake of theme hospital I’d switch to Xbox no problem.

The resolution will be comparable to the Xbox One X but it blows it away in every other aspect. It has the same CPU and SSD (but smaller) as the series X has.But it has the same power as the Xbox One X? Will games look anywhere near as good as on the Xbox Series X on it or what?
Sounds like a copy of the iPhone XR model
It isn’t a next gen console.
This.According to the Steam hardware survey only 2% on PC players game at 4K. 1080p and lower makes up over 85% of PC players.
Not even comparable for consoles though.This.
Er yeah it is. A lot of people are still more than happy to play at a solid 1080p and will continue to do so, as will a lot of PC gamers. Not even comparable for consoles though.
I assure you a hell of a lot more than 2% of console gamers will game at 4K. Most pc gamers (bar the truly dedicated few) do not have 4K monitors. Virtually every console gamer has a 4K tv... and that’s before these next gen consoles have even released.Er yeah it is. I think that’s an absolute touch from a business point of a view. Those that are questioning the market for it - everyone here is a nerd so obviously want the biggest, shiniest new thing, but not everyone is like that. There’ll be loads of parents interested, people that don’t really give a shit about gaming but wouldn’t mind it for fifa, my mate who’s a cheapskate will still be able to play cod with us.
Will probably sell quite steadily too, as less games are made for both gens. Most people that want the top spec model will want one straight away.

Last gen's PS4 would've been closer to PC as well if Sony had decided to price it higher. It had GPU equivalent to AMD 7850 which was quite decent at the time and was only a year old although Nvidia 700 series blew it out of the water.Of course it is. Despite a vocal minority parttoting the same PC masterrace BS, this generation will be the closest consoles have been to PC gaming.

I agree with you, I think it’s a clever business decision. I’m responding to a stat that was posted above which has been cited to support the idea that most gamers won’t benefit from the new 4K tech (or are happy to play at 1080p, which is true for pc gamers, but less so for console gamers). The Series S isnt targeting these people though. Xbox will always sell less than PS5, so Microsoft seem to be targeting the casual gamer and young (parents buying) gamers at that price point - or even as some posting here, a secondary console to their PS5 main purchase. It’s filling a gap in the market. Why have a bmw 3 series when you have the 5 series etc
That’s precisely my point. Most console gamers have the hardware to game at 4K, whereas most pc gamers do not.Dedicated PC players play at 1080p or some at 1440p at a push
They’ll probably have to have the next gen in a few years won’t they? I think at that price they might be tempted to say feck it and do it sooner though. The question is, how many people who are casual gamers also want the latest thing? That's what seems odd to me. Most casual gamers will just stick with what they already have until it stops getting new games. Cut back consoles are usually a way to encourage late adopters to finally let go of old machines and get on board, rather than leaders to get people on the platform early. The risk of course is that they simply cannibalise their own market.

Yup, and that was my initial point. The stat above doesn’t give any indication as to the satisfaction of gamers based on resolution, nor does it attempt to. It’s just cold hard facts - only 2% of the respondents game at 4K on pc. We can speculate as to what the specific reasons are (and you raised some pretty good points), but ultimately the stat is neither applicable nor particularly relevant for console gamers. Most will be able to play at 4K, so most will therefore want their consoles to allow for 4K capability. My point was PC gamers want to game at 1080p. We don't really care about 4k, it just hinders performance.
But I agree, most console gamers play at 4k, not because they want to, but because it's the more accessible option.
Most competitive Xbox players would actually want to game at 1080p with higher frames if it was an option, which it isn't. Maybe with the 120hz thing this will become a bit easier for them, but not all games will support it.
Console is completely aimed at the couch / casual gamer and 95% of users are exactly that
