feck. Yeah, did not expect £250. Very accessible.

PS5 S at £350 minimum, maybe £400?

Not really the same thing are they so would expect it to be more.

Finally $299 didn't mean £299!

I think it will be £399/449, with the disc one £499.

For Xbox S to be £150 cheaper than the PS5 Slim though is pretty big to be fair.. could see Sony lose some market share in UK/US (they'll still sell most in both I'm sure and dominate everywhere else)

Yeah totally, not saying the price isn't justified - I'm sure it is.

Could see what someone said earlier where people get the S as a second machine to compliment the PS5.

It's a great move for them, it's going to sell at that price. Imagine how many people do not care about 4K or parents that really won't read up on this stuff. They have put a next-gen label on it and made it £250, it should sell itself really.

Yeah, Sony has got themselves into a position where they'll win anywhere regardless of price. The only possible exceptions to this would be the UK and the US.

I was actually thinking of doing this myself in response the price is that good. I'll probably just buy both best versions in the end.

Or 2 year financing option at £20/25pm including gamepads (100+ games) and Xbox live saving you a further £40pa. Parents will lap that up especially in current circumstances I think.

Wait, a minute, the Series S has a 500gb SSD. That's why it's so cheap!

500gb, that's a downside but it keeps the cost down doesn't it. Next gen though, thats probably like 3 games on the SSD.

As opposed to 4 or 5 games on the £500 consoles unfortunately.. gonna be an issue whichever device.

I think for people like you the S is perfect as it’s a cheap entry point and with gamepass you’ll have access to a ton of games for a small monthly fee.
Yeah. Does gamepass include the big games like FIFA, GTA etc.? Sounds perfect if that's the case.

As someone dipping into this topic for the first time, what's the difference between this S console and the more powerful last generation Xbox? Is the new one more or less powerful than the older one?

If it was 1tb the cost would be up by £100 probably. So better releasing it cheaper and letting the consumer having the option. PS5 is only like 825GB.

Game sizes will probably be smaller this gen

Speaking to GameSpot, Jason Ronald explained that Series X’s hardware decompression allots as limited space as possible on the SSD for games to consume. It significantly drops all CPU overhead typically associated with run-time decompression. “This includes BCPack, which is designed specifically for compressing texture data that often is one of the largest contributors to overall game size… to help compress the actual size of the assets,” he said.

The newest Xbox console will provide players with lots of efficient features. These will enable them to choose specific gameplay elements they wish to install. Players can unclog some extra GBs from the SSD by not installing unused languages or unpreferred game modes, among others.

Developers can also take advantage of a platform feature to only install the pieces of the game players need, thereby minimizing the amount of content that needs to be installed or downloaded to the SSD.

We’re providing a lot of tools to help them be more efficient,”
Ronald continued. “If you’re on an English console, [you shouldn’t] be taking space for French or Spanish audio files, things like that.

It's great but I imagine most people would want 4K now?
I dunno, I imagine we'll all be surprised at the amount of people who couldn't give a toss about having their games at 4k vs 1440p in the fact of a console that's half the price that they can just play FIFA/COD on and avail of a service as good as Gamepass.

Just look at the PS3 and 360 - price is what matters, not performance.

It's slightly less powerful in terms of GPU compared to Xbox One X but It's CPU is way faster and on par with the more expensive next gen version, Xbox series X. It should run all the next games at 1080p whereas you can't guarantee the same for last gen consoles including Xbox One X because of differences in CPU and rest of the specs.

360 performed better than PS3 though. Won nearly every digital foundry contest. I remember Gabe being so annoyed that he outsourced orange box on PS3. Didn’t bother with left 4 dead on it and then made up with Portal. Skyrim was another game that ran bad on the PS3. There were a few exceptions like GTA 5, but most games ran better on 360 which was also the cheaper console.

Damn. That console looks nice, and at £250?

I have a PC and subscribe to gamepass, so I don't think I have much use for one of these... do I? I do miss playing some games with a controller over mouse and keyboard...

Yeah sounds right but that was more due to the PS3 being a total bitch to develop for wasn't it? It definitely caught up as the years passed by. Still, on paper it was definitely the more impressive machine of the two and I remember there being a big kerfuffle about the fact that it had Bluray and the 360 didn't. The 360 won early on because it came out first and because it was way cheaper.

Uhhh, just buy an Xbox controller and plug it into your PC then! Works wonders.

The Xbox One was $499 when it launched and was priced at £429 in the UK. I would guess they would follow suit again.

£ is weaker now than then mind, but maybe. Would be a good price.

If it runs last gen games via gamepass, are they locked to 1080p too? I assume they're 4K at the moment on One X...?

That Xbox S will sell really well, it’s pretty affordable and I already have some of my PS friends saying they will get that first while money is tight. Personally, I’ve saved the money and I want to experience next gen with all the bells and whistles so I’ll definitely stick to PlayStation but I’d be tempted to get the S in the future once they have some games to play.

I think it’s hard in this day and age to get people to switch consoles. Lose their digital library if they have one and more importantly where your friends are playing. Just like it’s hard to get IOS users to android and vice versa.

But the series s compliments PS5 with that price. It also gets casuals who do very little gaming interested. New gamers interested in that price.

So just did some maths. 249.99 is 83.332777759259% of 299.99. So if this percentage holds then 83.332777759259% of 499.99 would be priced at £416.65 in the UK. I'm sure they'll round that up though.

I think they will probably keep it at 1440p because the Gpu isn't quite as powerful as One X and they've marketed Series S as 1440p system so, it makes sense to limit it and just use the extra power to boost the FPS.

I probably don't 'game' enough to justify spending half a grand on a console so £250 + game pass is probably the way forward. It's nice to have the option!

As someone dipping into this topic for the first time, what's the difference between this S console and the more powerful last generation Xbox? Is the new one more or less powerful than the older one?

I think it will be essentially a revised Xbox one X with a faster CPU and SSD and similar GPU power. But GPU is build on RDNA 2.0 architecture, (I think) and so it should be more efficient and have more features thus still better than Xbox one X. £250 is an incredible price for what you’re getting.

Series S will be perfect for anyone that’s not playing on 4K displays and even then it will be able to output 4K in older titles like Red Dead Redemption 2 as Xbox one X has native 4K support for it. This a great deal for any casual gamer.

500gb, that's a downside but it keeps the cost down doesn't it. Next gen though, thats probably like 3 games on the SSD.

Gonna depend on the smart delivery working well I guess. If it is a 1080p machine purely then it'll have smaller install sizes, plus I'm guessing it will be expandable.

Its not great, but I think it'll work for what the machine is aimed at.

How many of you would go for the 250 dollar one though? A console is bought for the next 5-7 years and 4K is now pretty much everywhere.

Do is the 250 version essentially like yhe digital only version of the PS5?

This comes out a week after my bday and at that price it's gonna be hard to resist buying one.
