Xavi (Spanish Lego Pep) | Manager watch

So, Laporta decided that what would really help Barca's perilous financial position is refusing the resignation of the first team manager (which costs the club nothing) and instead opting to sack him (which will result in the club having to pay him off).

I guess this must be the lesser known "making yourself look like an incompetent tit" lever?

So he told Barca he wanted to leave at the end of the season. They convinced him to stay only to sack him at the end of the season anyway

Strong "you can't leave me, I'm breaking up with you" energy

Not sure if sarcastic but we literally did this to Ole. Rightly so too, sentimentality shouldn't get in the way of making practical decisions.
We did nothing like this to Ole. It would be like Ole quitting after the Europa league final loss, citing depression and mental health issues, Arnold persuading him to stay and then sacking him three weeks later.

It's weird that they've sacked him. He finished second in the league. Even if he finished 8th and set new unwanted records every few weeks, you have to give him another season just to be certain he's rubbish...don't you?

He's lucky, no idea why he wanted to stay in the first place. Going to be interesting to see Laporta have to face reality. He's just spent even more, done the same as Bartomeu. They didn't even receive the money from the supposed sale of the studios, fire sale of the squad incoming ?

Hansi just better hope the cheques don't bounce..?

They didn’t sack him because he’s rubbish, they sacked him because he dared to question what the feck Laporta has done with their finances in a throwaway comment.

... No?

You would think so, but watch Barca buy Bernardo Silva for 105m this summer.

They sacked him because he dared say it loud that club was in financial dire straits and that it was difficult to compete under those conditions against the likes of Madrid. Which he's actually right about

They were playing straight up Tony Pulis football with Luuk de Jong and Pique up front at times under Koeman.
They did that under Guardiola at times too. See the semi final against Inter

This whole "Xavi didn't deliver on positional play" stuff is ridiculous too. Please explain how he didn't, exactly

Right, but why is everyone else forgetting that he won La Liga in his first season?

"Oh no, he didn't win the league two years in a row in a season when Real hit 96 points."

I mean, what are people expecting from a manager of a financially broken club?

We were linked with him weren't we? A story about how he was on our list before they said he'd stay? So imagine (hope not) he is back on?

Does he even speak English?
Pretty sure I've heard him giving interviews on ESPN. Unless I wasn't paying attention and it was someone else speaking every time. (Podcast so sometimes I miss out who's speaking unless it's a regular)

Barcelona’s answer to the back, sack and crack:

Sack, back and Flick.

Mes Que un Wax.

I'm coming round to the idea that Xavi could be a good replacement for ETH

Apparently Wilcox told ten Hag that he needs to start playing a possession style system. I think we have some good players for that and we are now signing players with a philosophy in mind.

While his system was possession based he also had Barca playing more vertically. They'd look for switches from deep which I think Onana, Martinez and Ugarte are capable of doing, and we've done it at times under ten Hag.

While not a perfect match, I don't think the system is a miles away from ten Hag's and if any appreciates the importance of midfield, it's xavi.

Xavi Pros:

- Imagine what working with him could do for Kobbie Mainoo.

- Would set us up significantly better in midfield even with the current personal.

- Won a title with Barcelona, with far from a vintage Barcelona team, in a pressure cooker environment where everything less than a title would be a disaster.
United is a walk in the park as far as pressure goes in comparison to Barcelona, over there you don’t lose 7-0 to Real Madrid or finish 8th and get clapped off by the fans, they tear you apart.

- Would be fantastic for all young players, intelligent and knows the game inside out:

Xavi Cons:

- Will take time to get used to the league

- Unknown quality really outside of the relative comfort zone in the club he’s spent every second of his professional life, as well as inexperience as a coach.

- Had a poor CL campaign with Barcelona

Taking all of this into account, I would be in favor of him getting the job.
Whilst folks keep saying our players are technically incompetent, I disagree, I think its the coach who is incompetent.
Our squad has as many technically gifted players on the ball as we’ve had for a long long time, literally every single defender we have in the squad is good on the ball, as well as the goalkeeper, for a start, that was never the case in previous squads.

Where did you get the info in the second paragraph?

Based on what I‘m seeing on the pitch, the game model has little to do with possession football.

Xavi isn‘t good enough, we need to look elsewhere.

I think we're miles off the CL at this point so that's not an immediate concern. His lack of experience in the PL could be a worry but it's not like managers with no PL experience have always done badly.

Will Xavi or any other manager take 10 years off Casemiro's age ?

That's your problem, along with the attitude of a few other players.

Not the manager.

Ten Hag has had 3 years to make a team and signed up most of his former players. He is the problem.

There are few ideal candidates and we're looking to bring in a coach. I think the days of giving a manager a few seasons are gone. I don't think Tuchel is a much better candidate.
That‘s from April: we have seen no evidence of a possession based style being implemented.

We have seen a different approach since the last three games of last season: but it isn‘t possession football.
