Xabi Alonso | Bayern Munich player

The lure of Guardiola.

Only of Guardiola?
There is a couple of reasons to go to Munich.

But the most important maybe is that he had the reasons to leave Madrid. That it is Munich then makes a lot of sense.

I've been saying it for ages that just because we have been poor at midfield department is the reason why we tend to overrate midfielders.

Pogba, Gustavo, Thiago are all examples of that. No doubt they are good players and talents but they are still overrated on the caf.

Not sure if serious or wumming.

I don't get the opinions on Kroos here. Why the lovefest?
I had an excellent post about him in about march at the newbies. Would love to post it again, but well.

At about march, 80% of Bayerns fans were ok with him leaving. Then, something changed. And no, it wasn't his playing style. I think the redcafe is partly to blame, because it was a variation of the old game "the grass is greener on the other side of the fence". Nobody cared before english fans fell into an unjustified hype after the games against Arsenal and Manchester. It's like we had a semi-hot girlfriend which we only started to care about when some good looking but desperate drunk guy (yes, that's Manchester) started to flirt with her. Still doesn't make her sexy, but you may be tricked into thinking so.

Kroos is a very specific answer to a very specific question, he's a great passing machine, but that's about it. His defensive contribution is abysmal, his offensive contribution is overrated of you take a look at the stats. He wanted to leave because Bayern wasn't really his club, and though it doesn't give the best impression to "swap" Kroos for Alonso it probably wasn't the wrong decision, because it wasn't really a swap after all. Kroos just wasn't worth paying him 12 Million € in March and probably isn't now.

Somewhat agree with this. Kross is a great passer but id take Alonso over him right now. I think his games against Arsenal and us elevated his profile into the stratosphere. We have seen it before. Whenever a player has a great performance against any english team the media tends to overrate them. It took a long long time for the english media to finally accept that Ibrahimovic was indeed a great player and it was solely based on a couple of games against english sides over the years.

Alonso is a leader type that is there in the bad moments as well - moments in which Kroos already sits in the team bus...

Maybe Kroos is a player that makes the shiny matches even more shiny - but he is not the guy that makes a difference in the tough matches...

i dont think alonso would have helped us anyway, we need a mobile center midfilder who is a decent tackler and will cover a lot of ground and stop teams walking through our midfield.

Spot on and really the only needed answer to the question: "So why didn't you pay Kroos as much as the other star players."

He certainly would have helped. He may not be as mobile but Fletcher and Cleverly aren't exactly known for those traits either. Not to mention he can pass to players on his team with regularity. That alone is enough reason as to why he would help. We pile most of the pressure on ourselves with woeful passing.

Its not "spot on" at all. Kroos isn´t particularly good against smaller teams, because possession itself becomes far less valuable. Player who frequently beat their man or who score usually become more spectacular. Anyway. The discussion would be fruitless.
Alonso and Kroos have little to do with each other. We bought Alonso, because Schweinsteiger is out for longer than expected. Bastian missed 40 matches in the last two years and played at least another 10-40 with minor injuries. With Alonso as alternative there is no need to rush him back. Finally he might get enough time to get 100% healthy again, so he can perform another 2-3 years on a top level. Its a very reasonable and risk-free transfer. Alonso earns quite a bit but a two year contract with a rather small fee makes this good business.

yeah he would help in possession but would would help are glaring problem of not having a center midfileder who can tackle, so we would still need to buy one, in which case where would we play alonso?

It's easy to bash Kroos now that he's not a Bayern player anymore, right?

He gets so much criticism these days but he's shown at Bayern and the World Cup what a fantastic player he is. This "Kroos never turns up in big games" is simply bs, he was great against Real Madrid even in 2012. And he's also only 24 being one of the best midfielders in the world, where was Schweinsteiger at that time?

This guy has been making out that Alonso has a bad attitude in a similiar vain to Arbeloa. Anybody know anything about that - always came across well in his liverpool interviews.

He is a Barcelona fan and never has anything good to say about Madrid. That should answer your question.

Arbeloa came across well at Liverpool too, it was only when Mourinho took over he turned into a prick.

Alonso still seems like a decent guy off-the-pitch, it's just his reckless tackling that annoys me now.

Reading closer, it seems to be that alonso and arbeloa were closer to mourinho during the classico derbys, casillas didnt want to cause a rift with NT barca players. Still dont fully understand it.

Casillas and Ramos are close? Ramos looks a prick - Arbeloa and Alonso are probably in the right.

Would have gladly had him here. Taking 2/3 of a Champions League winning midfield to replace the runway that is our midfield would have been too much to handle.

Yeah. Im with you. Some Bayernfans love(d) to hate him. He is someone who sees football for his club as a job. You can tell by his whole pitch behavior and some people (want to) see a player who doesnt care and doesnt give it all.
He does. And he is world class for years. Agree with your view on his Real games in 2012. He ran the show in Madrid when the rest of the team was overrun. He rescued us that night.
But you know; the grass somewhere else is always greener. Kroos being German, being watched since he came with 17 into the first team(2 assists in his first game) was someone the fans knew.
And if you know someone for so long he looses his aura a bit. Same with Kroos. Would he be Spanisch and come to us now with his career at Real the haters would go crazy in a positiv way.
You can ignore all Kroos bashing from Bayernfans. It has no substance.
He already had great games for Real, won an international trophy and is 24 till 2015. We will just enjoy him.(all football fans I mean, him at Real is a bit much atm so.)

I'm pretty sure you won't find a single postive word about Kroos from Blackwidow in any of her posts in the past, it's not just now that he left Bayern  .

Oh, you probably can find good words from Kroos from me, too. If somebody really critisized him wrongly I might have even talked different about him. I look at his advantages and disadvantages - and yes, my personal view is probably influenced by some arrogant interviews of him of the past and watching him 7 seasons... I just do not think that he was that good that some seem to hype him to. And I only counter arguments.

Alonso is in Munich since an hour. Film from the airport

Good luck to him. Over the last 5 years he has been our second best player after Ronaldo. I have high standards for what I consider to be world class, but for the majority of his Madrid career he has been undeniably world class and over the last 5 years Ronaldo (as well as maybe ramos but that probably just shows how little I think about todays generation of defenders) is the only other player I would say that about.

Good post.

Thought he would retire at Real, but looking at the way they buy galactico's like they change socks, it's not a surprise.

Dream pair?
Since around 2010 or 2011, I always thought Schweinsteiger would have been the perfect partner for Xabi Alonso in order to combat Barcelonas excellent midfield at the time (Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets at their best). It is cool that I will finally get to see it happen, although unfortunately not at the club I wanted.
That is of course if guardiola plays them together when Schweinsteiger is back.

Mourinho wanted him badly for Real. He was quoted once that he told to Schweinsteiger "next season I am going to get you". Now Pep gets them...

Went through the medical without problems. Deal is not hundred percent finished (just a question of hours - if there was no acceptance of Real he would not have been able to do a medical). It is told that he holds a press conference tomorrow in Madrid and then probably gets back to Germany to sign the contract.

One of my favourite non united players. Genuine class act.

Bayern strong CL favourites this year I think and Alonso under Pep's guidance will have them playing some stunning football this year.

Torn between who I should be a glory hunter fan in this years CL: Real Madrid or Bayern Munchen!

Poor Ancelotti has had the balance ripped from his midfield with both Di Maria and Alonso leaving. I'll be very impressed if he finds a way to keep things working....

One question; is Xabi still world class for longer periods of time? What a midfield we could have.
Will see you @Raul Madrid in the KO stages. Still some things to answer. ;):smirk::nervous::D

Gutted we could not get alonzo on board, has he would have been a fantastic player to go straight into the united midfield along with di maria on saturday

You'd be surprised. I heard time and time again that he's one of the most likeable guys off the pitch. And having seen him in countless interviews I can understand why.
