WWC23 | England v Spain - Spain win the World Cup - and Rubiales gets sacked

Lauren James on pretty quickly in second half you'd imagine.

England need a quicker threat in final third.

England not too bad, Spain are just better at passing the ball and getting it back

I’m watching the Spanish midfielders showing for the ball all the time and I’m hoping Ute’s men’s teams midfielders are watching

Why have some the Spain players boycotted the game?

Spain is playing in their first Women's World Cup final (make sure to check out our Women's World Cup final live blog here), but will do so without a handful of top players because of an ongoing protest against the Royal Spanish Football Federation.

In September 2022, 15 players sent the federation separate but identical emails asking not to be called up to the national team, citing a lack of professionalism that each player wrote had an "important effect on my emotional state and by extension my health." They demanded "a clear commitment to a professional project with attention paid to all the aspects needed to get the best performance of this group of players" in the email.

According to The Athletic, among the players' complaints was insufficient preparation for matches, from arriving to host cities too late and traveling by bus when planes would be considered the practical choice. The players also reportedly had issues with several coaches, alleging they were asked them to keep their hotel room doors open until midnight and inspected their bags after they went on excursions during camps. The players never explicitly asked for head coach Jorge Vilda or his coaching staff to be fired, but it was clear the relationship between them was fractured.

Weird!

If England lose this I expect a root and branch review of the state of the game.

More needs to be done to identify technical players both in mens and women’s game. We are still obsessed with power, strength and height. The Spanish have proved you don’t need that if the technical ability is good enough.

Lack of pace in the side. Need more composure on the ball, Spain look comfortable

Thought we looked the more dangerous side in the first 20 minutes but have dropped away. Need half time asap.

I agree with this. We're very obsessed in this country with the size or frame of a player. How often do we hear that "this player is too small for the Premier League" or "this player is too weak"? Technical ability is very important.

The question is, how much better would Spain be with all their best players on the team? Or would they even be better? ;)

Backstreet boys playing at half time. Maybe the men's game should do the same.

England GK looks very angry. What was she complaining about when the goal was scored?

What a crazy half. Think England are kind of lucky to be in the game still. Getting outnumbered in midfield. Toone has been playing far too separated from the other two

Probably the way Bronze gave away the ball in midfield and didn't make her way back to track the runner. It was a cheap goal to give away.
I think I saw her complain to referee about something, I could be wrong, maybe she was angry at her defense.

One thing often overlooked by the possession of Spain's football is how they press well in numbers and force a mistake. Barcelona at their peak were so good at it, they would just hound you off the ball.

Yeah, I saw that too and wondered if she was complaining about Bronze being fouled in midfield, which really wasn't the case. Maybe it's that, or she's complaining to the midfield/defence and the ref just happens to be in the camera's shot.

Well one is a RB and the other one is young English striker. It’s not really that difficult to see why

Replacing Russo is much more easy than replacing Battle, Ona is top 3 in the world on her position while Russo might be top 25 if we are kind to her.

I dont agree with playing the England card, how many overrated mens englands players have United overpaid for? ALOT!

Maybe in terms of marketing Russo was gold, but I prefer performance on the pitch over nationality!
