WWC23 | England v Spain - Spain win the World Cup - and Rubiales gets sacked

Hurtig is coming on, here comes long ball sweden with a last desperate rush! Spains goalkeeper looks short compared to swedish players, I guess just bomb away at the penalty area and hope for a bounce. Sweden have not created much, so just throw everyone forward.

Batlle is such a great player to watch. It’s a shame she left but it was a privilege to watch her play for us.

Pity because I would have preferred Sweden as an England fan. Spain are going to be very hard to beat

Spain was a formidable opponent for England in the EUROS in the quarterfinals, that game could have gone either way, I guess the final will be the same.

Congrats to Spain who were the better side today, not a by huge margin, but still deserved to go through!

Hectic finish to the match there !

think it's a bit harsh to blame the keeper, could do better but I wouldn't call it a howler

It was not a howler as such, just very poor goal keeping. Huge shame. I really wanted Sweden to win here.

Even though I wanted Spain to win I feel for Sweden, they are a really good team, this is where one side of things starts to feel a bit cruel. Really great atmosphere at the game, both sets of fans made a ton of noise.

Surprising to see Spain come so far in the tournament after all the hoopla they had last season with the manager with half of the Barcelona players leaving the team. Seems that the ones left were really committed. And they have a solid team which really plays well, they have quality coming from the bench too.

I don't know if she was unsighted or just not expecting Spain to shoot (because it was a novelty) but it felt to me like she reacted late. As you say, not a howler but not good.

Righto, thats me off to the Sweden v Spain semifinal, handy to live 15 minutes walk from Eden Park. Im hoping for a Spanish win but expect Sweden to take the honours. Sounds like a great crowd again here, pretty nice evening too, the weather is behaving, we have been pretty lucky here in NZ with the least rain I have ever seen winter in August. I hope its an epic game.

When the rain came, I hope you weren't sitting behind the goals. It was a decent game but provided the Matildas win their semi final, I was keen for extra time and penalties at Eden Park

Yes it was their first long range shot on target

She clearly misjudges it so yes can do better but probably sees it a bit late

I was in the main stand so kept dry thanks but I had only taken a light rain jacket with me which wasnt the best on the walk home. We had sunshine all day and the weather forecast said rain wouldnt arrive till the middle of the night. What a genius..
I have no idea who will win the Aussie v England game, hoping our Aussie neighbours can do something amazing but this England side looks like they are building momentum. Also for some reason i like the England side, seems like a great bunch. Most Kiwis here are cheering for the Aussies which is a bit rare relative to sport.

What do you put that down to? I'll admit I wanted New Zealand to beat Australia in the Rugby League World Cup semi final last year due to that tournament badly needing somebody else winning it.

Saturday evening's win against France at Lang Park was torture. Goodness knows what's in store tonight.

It would be the same if the position was reversed. Kiwis and Aussies like to beat each other but will usually support each other against most other countries, especially England.

Struggling to see England winning in 90 minutes. Their tactics have just been completely awful all tournament. It doesn’t seem to matter who they play, they can’t exert themselves at the better side. (Barring China but totally different circumstances to any other game + a perfect match up) This is the first high level team they’ve played this comp. If the same happens, they’ll finally get punished by playing against high level attackers who won’t let them off. It’ll need a big improvement from England to get through without penalties.
