WWC23 | England v Spain - Spain win the World Cup - and Rubiales gets sacked

No walkovers in these knockout matches. England v Australia is going to be fun.

Decent game with 3 really bad goals defensively, excellent finish by Russo aside. Colombia handled the lead terribly.

Well played England and another well taken goal.

No reason they shouldn't go all the way now, Spain look decent but haven't seen anything in the three other teams to fear for England.

They've faced all sorts so far in this tournament and come through, teams that liked to come forward, teams that liked to stay back, teams that tried to pass it, teams that got physical, extra time, going a goal down, a sending off, penalties.

Surprisingly for an England team, mentally strong and nothing seemed to faze them.

A semi final against Australia will be some atmosphere.

Would be very harsh, it was a their throw?

It was England's. Even so, there was nothing to warrant such a reaction from Santos.

Where is the line drawn if yellow cards are not given for dissent? We have seen men getting those in similar circumstances.

Colombia were quite a hurdle to overcome. Absolutely committed and a mix of physicality and some technically good players. England did well.

We've also seen them not booked. No need to compare.

I'm emotionally spent after the Matildas match. A win against England with less tension would be lovely on Wednesday night.

That is going to be a massive game, England v Australia

The Australia vs France game is likely the most watched program in Australia since Cathy Freeman's Gold medal at Sydney 2000. This will be even bigger. Excitement is fever pitch here.

Yup. For the first time in goodness knows how long, the AFL grand final or State of Origin will not be the highest rating sports event on Australian TV. The first 10 minutes of channel 7's 6pm news in Brisbane was about the Matildas. Unheard of for football, men's or women's in this country.

Whoever wins the final, they'll be newbies. Sweden got to the final in 2003, but lost (on golden goal) to Germany.

Looks like Spain are now the bookies favourites, but only really due to the fact they have the Oz Vs England semi as a tighter battle

Righto, thats me off to the Sweden v Spain semifinal, handy to live 15 minutes walk from Eden Park. Im hoping for a Spanish win but expect Sweden to take the honours. Sounds like a great crowd again here, pretty nice evening too, the weather is behaving, we have been pretty lucky here in NZ with the least rain I have ever seen winter in August. I hope its an epic game.

Not sure who I want to win this one - probably Spain as no hard feelings for Ona Batlle so rooting for her

I want Spain to go through. They would provide more than half of a very entertaining final because of their style of play, and it would be a very good message of evolution in the women's game after a decade of sandpaper-like domination mostly led by the USWNT.

Spain has a victim that got 2 yellow card in 5 games and are suspended for this semi-final. I send her a big hug as thats something that should not happen to anyone, not beneficial for the competition nor the fans who wants to see the best players compete!

Sweden really improving in the first half and it ends up feeling very 50 50 here, some good chances for both sides.

Cagey but well balanced first half. Sweden will probably be happier with the half than Spain.

Big chance for Spain. This is my first time seeing Paralluego but she looks class having just come off the bench.

Its weird how Spain can be so skilled but when they enter the final 3rd their passing turns to sh1t...
