WWC23 | England v Spain - Spain win the World Cup - and Rubiales gets sacked

Kelly and Daly with monster pens, proper whacked it.

That's a relief. Overall, very poor England performance and they'll have to play much, much better in the next round. Got away with this one.

Well England now have a good chance in the quarter finals, they will hopefully have learned a lot from that game.

Absolutely love those pens from Daly and Kelly. Especially the second, absolute piledriver!

Out of jail there, but some serious damage done as Lauren James she won't play again in this tournament.

That was very lucky by England, a very poor performance but decent pens (after the 1st one). Really need to get it together for the next round now though.

As bad as some of the penalties were, we also saw some absolute belters.

The winning pen was unstoppable, male or female I don't think any keeper saves that.

The worry for England is they've struggled to create many times before an during this tournament and only James introduction did we see the team spark into life. She couldn't get into the game today and we saw England fall back to where they were. We have some good players in Russo and Daly but it's just not clicking well. Spain Japan are looking really good.

They are beautiful to watch but if it turns out to be a Jaap Stamesque howler you will hear it forever.

Was signed,

Jaap Stam.

Gutted for Nigeria to be honest. Buzzing for us but Nigeria more than deserves to go through. No idea what James was thinking. Crazy thing to do. Have to fix up for next round and we’re out.

I hope in the next round the manager shakes it up abit. That was nowhere near good enough
Yeah, even more than the players, Wiegman needs to learn some lessons from today.

Dunno why she was so reluctant to use her bench, when she has so much quality there. The win at the Euros was largely built on her strategic use of substitutes.

Maybe next game she’ll play a totally different side.

England have a legit penalty overturned and had more shots on target, and more possession than Nigeria despite playing 36 minutes with 10 players... and Nigeria are unlucky not to go through?

I thought it was a pretty even game that could have gone either way myself. Nigeria are a good side but England got through on being more experienced in big games.

What a drama! Daughter glued to the telly, missus up in full emotional array about a football game - that’s a first! First time everybody in the house is fully focused on a game of football.

Hard luck for Nigeria, you could tell emotions were running high for a few of them on the penalties. They deserved the win based on 120 mins of football for me. But happy for England. Impressive penalties for them, and well defended 10 vs 11.
