WSL chat - but mostly United miscellaneous

Could we realistically have rivalled City for Kerolin or potentially Arsenal for Rodman?

No and I don't think that's just about money or desire. We're still newbies in the women's game and for a player who wants to play in the WCL and win trophies we're a massive gamble.

Skinner has no particular pulling power to counterbalance that. We didn't really cash in on the temporary feel good fizz that came from having Euros winning Earps, Russo and Toone.

Whatever glamour the club's name brings it's fading, particularly outside Europe.

It's not that we can't recruit excellent players - it's that we can't shop from the same shelf as City, Arsenal, PSG, Bayern etc. Chelsea, Barcelona and Lyon (historically at least) have a shelf of their own.

I reckon we've got a good squad that needs a bit of magic. Player development and good recruitment are obviously crucial, but so is that extra bit of puzzle solving and player development that a good manager/coaching team brings.

Very well summarized. And we also dont have state funding like City nor owners like Chelsea who despite losing 7£ in the last 2.5 years buys a player for 1.1$ million. Nor 30 000 in average attendance as Arsenal that would bankroll some good transfers as well.

Is it even realistic for anyone to compete with Chelsea if they continue to not fill their arena and lose endless amounts of money while raising player salaries all the time? I guess they will be saves by new investors now looking to cash in on their dominance that they used financial doping to get!

We are getting nowhere as long as the mens team is not sorted out and the ownership is serious about investing in the womens team. But with Chelsea doing what they are doing, why even bother? I can honestly see why Chelsea would turn off other clubs from investing in womens football!

For anyone other than the big 3 or 4 its basically impossible to get anywhere close to the top of the table and its only going to get worse, if clubs are allowed to lose as much money as they want, then the big clubs can never be touched!

Because there is a lot to play for even if winning the league title is unrealistic at the moment. Especially for us as we’ve never made it to the CL.

Cup final last season being a prime example. As someone who grew up a United fan but was never able to get to games due to finance/travel/parents who didn't care for the sport one iota, being at Wembley to watch Man Utd lift the FA Cup was the greatest sporting day of my life. As magnificent as the men's achievements were when I was a lad, being there in the ground was so much better than being in the living room.

Jule Brand avalable on a free in the summer, I'd take her.

Would you play her instead of Toone or Clinton? Don’t see her as a forward a team could rely on scoring enough.

Don’t get me wrong we need depth but I can’t see any of those three as a sub.

She's going somewhere isn't she.... Question is...is that "dictated whom I can and can't join" referring to United fans saying no don't come here or City fans saying no don't go there?
On further reflection, is she actually implying it's City themselves stopping her from going where she wants?

I assumed it was referring to city not allowing her to join a certain team. Why would she care what fans think. And I certainly don’t think United fans wouldn’t want her.

Don't think it's a big deal about the fans. She's played for Arsenal, Everton and City already so..

I've seen plenty of United fans openly object to the idea to be fair for a variety of reasons, not least of which to her wind up behaviour in derbies of yesteryear. Personally I'm not that fussed about that, but I don't see where she fits so don't really see the point...

No idea about City fans.

Plenty of women have played for a variety of direct rivals, but high profile moves between are still pretty rare I think? Sure, Russo to Arsenal but then Evans to Liverpool hardly counts.... Greenwood stopped off in France between us and City.

"The situation has dragged on too long" and "dictated" certainly point towards City being the obstacle.

The team losing most money in the whole womens football world is keeping up their shopping spree! If there is no financial fair play in the WSL then the league will be dead, it already is but it could become even worse! And yet while the investigation into if moving the Chelsea womens team solo was a breach of financial fair play.....

And what happens? Naive womens footy fans keep praising Chelsea as the best thing ever and Emma Hayes who built an empire cleaning toilets on weekends to fund it! Its so disgusting its almost at the level of people ignoring City cheating on the mens side! Does anyone have any morals AT ALL anymore?

It seemed pretty logical from the start that City would not want to hand United an asset mid-season, especially when the clubs are close in the table! Its better for City to keep an unhappy Kelly than to bolster United. Would have been a nice addition, but reality set in!

Barcelona selling her or letting her leave to their biggest rivals for the champions league title would be stupid! They dont need the money! Same could be said for City of course
If Keira Walsh wants to return to England so badly I know of a petro-chemical company that's got the spare change down the back of the sofa that it would take... It's late, I should probably go to bed and dream normally instead of ridiculous stuff like that!!

It's alright, I didn't want to win the league anyway.

800 000£ for Keira Walsh? Chelsea just spent more on transfers than most WSL clubs pays their whole squads in salaries for a season.

We were never winning the league, but allowing Chelsea to stack world class players while losing enormous amounts of money is annoying as h*ll. Especially lionesses which is a PR goldmine, if they keep this up they might even attract some glory hunting fans to come watch their games and start making money on attendance and if that happens it will KNOCK OUT for everyone else permanently!

Female version of City or is that unfair?

I wouldn't trust the WPLL on implementing much in regards to the WSL. I know they've only been at the helm for a short period of time, but nothing they have done or rumored to be considering are very encouraging.

Crucial to maintain this form and get three points from all the games before the horror ending. Perhaps I can accept one draw and five wins. Next two games also present a good chance to improve the goal difference, which could prove to be vital in the end.

Palace (H)
Leicester (H)
Liverpool (A)
Villa (A)
Everton (H)
West Ham (A)
. . .
Chelsea (H)
City (H)
Arsenal (A)

The Gunners kind of have an advantage as they are the only top 4 side to only play another top 4 side once during the run-in.

Our final three matches are a brutal way to end the season. Chelsea, I guess, we'll play at LSV which could help us to get something out of it.

If we are still in contention for top 3 at that point we need Old Trafford to be alive against City. We had very flat games against City and Chelsea there last year, not just by the team, by the crowd as well - though obviously the one feeds the other.

We'll be at the Emirates for the Arsenal game - potentially in front of a near full house. That match could matter to both sides. Could be a big day out!

Main thing for now is that we are still in contention, which is a big deal in itself.

Yep, a 7 point gap between us and city would be much more reassuring - but to be fair, a five point gap is more than welcome!
