WSL 24/25 | United v Spurs - Sun 13 Oct at 12:30

Terland on a hat trick after a very unpromising team performance for large parts of this half.

2-0 HT

A real smash and grab raid at the end of the first half! They ran the show for the for twenty minutes and were probably the better team for the next twenty.

Then glimmers of hope from the left via Toone and Galton and before Spurs got their breath back from that the Bizet/Terland combination kicked in.

Spurs must be wondering what the hell happened.

The first goal must be in top 5 ever scored for United at Leigh? Just unreal timing on that one :D Like a video game!

Should have been. Should have been buried into one of the corners. Good save though.

Yep - looked like her easiest chance of the day, but obviously not.

Ouch . Penalty - Neville hand ball

I'd call the penalty "unlucky" (for Neville), but not "soft." Her arm was clearly outside the frame of her body, and the deflection interfered with a potential scoring opportunity.

Penalty under the current interpretation of the rules. I'd hate it being given against us, but it's not the sort that gets overturned by VAR. Not our fault that Neville stuck her arm out.

Spurs still playing with a lot of energy and we're still scrambling a bit to contain them. My FF manager head is starting to worry about preserving the clean sheet now

Terland, Toone, Naalsund go off. Williams, Miyazawa, Awujo on.

That’s what I don’t get about Skinner. Why not give Watson, Simpson or Newell a minute or two when the game is won? Why not use all five subs?

Anyway, a good win.

Good win. Can't start matches like that against stronger teams but great to see Terland scoring a pair of beautiful goals. Bizet/Galton have a tough job as wingbacks but they delivered. Solid 3-0 in the end.

It is starting to feel like Tullis-Joyce is an upgrade if she keeps going like this. Good to see Terland get off the mark with two really good goals. The crosses from Bizet were great as well, good stuff. The team as a whole seems like it hasn't really clicked yet, but good results so far.

Excited to see Bizet in the starting XI -- I really like what we've seen from her so far. I'd like to see Terland make a statement today to remind everyone why we brought her in.
I realize it is probably considered bad form to quote oneself, but here's what I posted after first seeing the lineup. Pretty good for an American, right?

I feel like I should get some kind of award or something....

Just got home from the game. Well! If I was spurs I’d be gutted, so tbf I am delighted. You have to take the wins when you don’t play great for sure. I don’t really remember that from last season. If you told me after 42 minutes that 3-0 would be the result I would have thought to spurs for sure. It seemed like they were first to everything, and all their touches and passes went to teammates. We weren’t making passes stick, missing open players (I thought Clinton would explode at one point, she was begging for the ball so often) and reverted to the pass and play round the back - but we could not keep possession in midfield for a while.
But - positives! Didn’t concede, Phallon was pretty secure and made good saves. We worked though it and improved, and had a centre forward who finished the chances she got - with some confidence.
And our seats were great, north stand on the halfway line, just under the cameras. So that was nice!

Consider this an internet nod of approval!

Yes and yes! She was getting called out to get on with her kicks, but I’d rather she took the time she needed and made the right choice.
In terms of clicking, there were a couple of moments that looked like a lack of understanding/anticipation as opposed to bad play, so hoping these diminish pretty quickly with playing time.

Excellent result, but such a strange game. We were nowhere for the vast majority of the first half, but also I never really saw Spurs as a threat, despite their possession.

Defensively we were solid and I have a lot of confidence in PTJ. I don't generally give Skinner much credit, but he deserves some today. Effectively he changed to three at the back, pushing Bizet up, and it worked a treat.- her crosses were superb and Terland's finishing was clinical.

I really like this squad and seriously hope Skinner makes the most of it.

Just got home from the game myself, long drive down the motorway today. That was a really entertaining game, even if we were poor during most of the first half. Phallon and our defence stood firm I thought, they played very well. Excellent to see Terland off the mark, hopefully we'll see goals flow from her now.

Interestingly, Sarina Wiegman was spotted at LSV - I'm sure she was there primarily to see Ella and Grace, but I wonder what she made of Maya, Millie and indeed Gabby at the back?

Celin Bizet player of the match for me, just by virtue of adjusting an unfamiliar position and delivering the goods going forward. Dominique Janssen a very close second for another of those unassuming but does everything right kind of performances in the middle of the park.

Is this team able to try a title challenge this season? I know there are a lot of changes in the team.

Hard to know until we play one of Arsenal, City or Chelsea. Definitely got it in them to make top 3 though I think, particularly with Arsenal stumbling already.

Sounds like we will have more than enough quality in the locker to see off most teams, even when not playing well but we’ll need to actually play much better against the big 3 (Chelsea, Arsenal, city). Hopefully we find our rhythm soon.

Only team in the league to not concede a goal as of yet.

Yeah, as @AmarilloMike said above - we need to play the top teams to see. Three victories is great for sure, but two of those were against teams that are sat very bottom of the league. Chelsea look pretty ruthless. Hope Arsenal are still ropey in a few weeks when we have them at home.

I’ll be happy if we can get back into the top 3, after last season’s backsliding. Early days yet, but as far as that’s concerned it’s so far, so good. We’re still some way off challenging Chelsea.

I hate to say it but, realistically, I think a title run is a bit overly ambitious. I think our roster is much improved over last year's, but Chelsea and Man City (did you see what they did to Barcelona?!) just have too much quality and depth. However, a top-three finish feels like a reasonable goal, especially with Arsenal stumbling out of the block.

After our match against Chelsea last week was postponed, the first of the "Big Three" we'll have to face is Arsenal in a couple of weeks. I think we'll be ready for that.

This is going to be an exciting and fun team to watch this season!

I’m guessing Terland and Bizet may need some bedding in, even if Clinton’s hit the ground running. Maybe a pro that the two latter has played together against todays opponents? Or maybe Spurs just knows how to best neutralize them :)
Okay, so feck beding in. Clinton played well, but it wasn’t the Spurs connection that beat them today. It was the Norwegian Wood.

Attendance was listed as 4473 today by the way - good spread around the ground and decent atmosphere. Still could do with more in though, all eyes on the Arsenal game in particular to hopefully get close to capacity at LSV.

I'm really pleased for Terland. She had a couple of nearly goals in our opening matches but the longer it takes for a new striker to get that first goal, the harder it can get on their confidence. Beautiful goals as well and as @Grande said with the assists coming from Bizet it's nice to think we could be seeing the start of another piece of our Norwegian story.

So, just because it made me smile...
