Wout Weghorst

Can someone enlighten me?

So, I watched an interview with Marco van Basten and according to him Weghorst is an average header of the ball and he isn't a target man who can holds up the ball like Luuk de Jong. Weghorst likes to keep the defenders busy by pressing and bullying them.

Is it true?
Yes despite the fact hes 6’6 he isn’t really a target man. He can still hold the ball up well, has pretty good technique but he will be best utilised pressing like a madman. His pressing numbers last season at Burnley were the best in the league.

Don't put me off him at all

As a Dutchman and Ajaxsupporter I can tell you MVB was a wonderful racehorse but a terrible jockey to paraphrase Co Adriaanse.

Cheers mate.

Partly. Luuk De Jong is insane with his head.

Wout’s hold up play is good: he gets lots of assists.

Lots of assists sounds good to me and probably the only player in this league who can look Dan Burn in the eyes

Think there is a possibility he could be in the stands for City a la Casemiro v Scousers but that's it

Doesn’t Van Basten spout crap about everybody? Or am I confusing him with somebody else?

Hopefully when he makes his typical striker moves, he will get played in. We needed someone in the box with the right movement for ages. Wout scores 99% of his goals from close range.
We now have Casemiro and Eriksen in the centre who can ping a pin point ball - will be very fruitful if he is making the runs. Bruno’s risky forced passes might pay off more too! It’s very exciting to have a different option in the squad and see what he can bring.

At this point i'm a "whatever ETH wants" kinda guy but some of the comments! Half the Caf is now Weghorst number 1 fans and those saying "judging him only on his Burnley time" are nuts. Pre Burnley, he gathered so much momentum and reputation that he managed to secure a move to.......... yes......... Bunley. He wasnt a ridiculously well coveted striker with the top clubs in Europe vying for his signature so let's get real, he was always kinda average. He was then sh1t at Burnley and he's been okay on loan at Besiktas. Again, if ETH thinks he is a good option then i'm all for it but please stop the revisionist history that he has been excellent outside of 1 poor season at Burnley!

I think people are understandably feeling pretty optimistic about life under ETH. I think there is an appreciation that he knows what he is doing and that WW can bring something to the team that we don't have currently. I also think that many people, myself included, are really just learning what sort of player he is right now. Many of us assumed that he was a target man, but it seems he has much more to his game. Looking forward to seeing what he can bring to the team and how far we can get in this second half of the season!

Wolfsburg to Burnley is arguably a step back. If I remember correctly, he accepted that cause he really wanted to play in the EPL. Guess it wasn't a great career move, although if that's how he's now ending up at United, he won't regret it.

He will know many people look at his time there and use it to ridicule so feel he will come here with point to prove

On a scale of 0 (Darwin) to 100 (Haaland) where does this guy sit?
150 - outscored Haaland in Germany, scored in the WC, has more experience, and is called Wout.
Might be too late for him to pip Haaland for the golden boot this season, but fully expect him to double Erling's tally if he stays next season

 love the OTT optimism

Think it could be sorted tomorrow then will travel later in the day and maybe even train on Friday, however like I said earlier gut feeling is that he will only be in the stands on Saturday

I’ll be happy as long as he starts off by scoring at a higher rate than this season’s Ronaldo.

Is this still a loan deal? Sounds like it would be really expensive loan for a back up player. Having to pay enough to loan the the player and pay Besiktas off.

This was the moment I became convinced

I’ve weirdly got good vibes about this, don’t know too much about him but after his goals at the World Cup and checking out some stats and YouTube vids I’m liking the cut of his jib, completely different to anything we’ve got at the moment…..

He’ll be utter dog shit now I’ve said that…sorry.

But yeah people need to temper their expectations a bit. He can put in a shift and provide some nice basic link up play, that's about it. Decent enough for a loan IMO.

The media/wum will compare him to Haaland but the real competition is between Wout and Martial.

I’ll have what he’s having…

Have you seen them recently? All the page three girls of that era have not aged well. At all. Shame when reality hits your boyhood (wet)dreams. :annoyed:
Without derailing the thread you've clearly not been keeping track of Holly Peers.

Marco van Basten isnt easily impressed but he is right about de Jong and Weghorst. Luuk de Jong is an excellent header of the ball and Weghorst is okay in the air but not as good as de Jong. Weghorst is better in general play with his pressing and likely is faster and better on the ball too... however that isnt saying much when you are compared to Luuk de Jong.

I was thinking particularly of Holly Maguire who used to be seriously cute but whose face seems to have fallen off. Jordan/Katie Price has ruined herself with her addiction to plastic surgery too.
Ach, my Page 3 days are over as well so I can't talk.

Wout is a pressing monster. Again that in itself doesn't mean much.

Most Premier League Pressures per 90
PLAYERPRESSURES
Wout Weghorst33.2
Kalvin Phillips28.7
Sean Longstaff27.3
Allan26.7
Mathias Jensen26.2
Pierre Lees-Melou26
Connor Gallagher25.6
Mateusz Klich25.3
Fred24.8

That's a list of a some pretty shite players

Didnt he feel pressured to feck off cause of his anti vax stance? That was the ongoing rumour at the time.

Sounds like he's a system player that's going to press well and give us options. We've got a metric shit ton of games coming up so he seems just what we need.

Not going to have the ego shit fest that we had from our previous number 7.
