In a weird way, I may actually be more excited to see his debut than any other recent signing. I’ve been banging the drum for so long about how a proper number 9 would transform this team. Can’t believe we finally have one. Even if he’s not world class (or even nearly world class) I honestly think he could be more transformative than any of the summer signings. Even Casemiro.

Big statement. If you are right and he is that transformative then we are winning the league.

We are crying out for a striker who knows how to run the channels, link play together, work his socks off/press well and score some goals obviously. He does seem to be a good fit, smart signing in many ways (will be highly motivated to do well for us in order to turn it into permanent deal). Might also help to get a tune out of Sancho who certainly seemed to benefit from paying with Haland.

Ball goes sailin' into Wout's space
Flies past the keeper's face

He'll take our game to another dimension
He'll take our game to another dimension
He'll take our game to another dimension

Ten Hag's intention

Surely it wouldn't be difficult to replace Martial? I am sure he is an upgrade.

This guy turned everyone into that Nunez chants creator who has no friend
I see at least one song in each page ffs

How comparable is he to Haller? He was pivotal to ETH's system at Ajax and Wout seems like a similar player.

Third lame chant contribution ;

Wout about now, the big goal scorer

At the very least this guy brings even more character and fighting spirit to our team.

To the tune of The tamperer -
If you buy this record - your life will be better.

If you buy this Weghorst your life will be better

The way we are playing at the moment I actually think we need a better physical version of Martial. I fear we will lose the speed of our attacks and counters and return to playing when Ronaldo was the central focus of the team. We've scored more goals and been more potent without a central striker since Ronaldo left and when we played without him in the team. I can't think of many if any elite teams presently playing with the likes of Weghorst.

The positives could be him being a nuisance for opposition defenders when our present system is not functioning and needs must. I do think at best he could be useful at corners and free-kicks and his extra inches could help if we are defending a goal toward the latter part of the game.

Then again, I could be talking rubbish. I can't remember ever seeing him play prior to the WC.

I think we're just a Rice/Caciedo/DeJong type midfielder and an elite striker short of winning the Premiership. At present, if something happens to Casemiro or Rashford we're done.

The upside is he offers us something different. A non-constant croaked version of martial will suffice. What the current version does bring is movement outside the box, pulling players all over the place and creating gaps.

Not sure this Weghorst does that esp in the middle of the field.

He will come in handy towards the end of the 2nd half where the defence is tiring. To be harassed by a 6ft 6in beast will intimidate and one.

He will press but he won't have Tony's overall movements

Martial isn't the best at holding up the ball, headers or playing in the six yard box. I think is going to be really interesting to see if ETH starts him vs Arsenal because they was counted alot yesterday.

I thought read that he was some kind of pressing monster, with great hold up play as well, if that's the case he's a very different prospect to Ronaldo and should fit in well.

EDIT: Found this from The Athletic

He impressed at Burnley, too, with his physical data and fitness levels. Against Wolves last April, Weghorst registered 57 pressures — the most by a player in a single Premier League game that season.

Not only did his goalscoring whet the appetite, but Burnley were impressed with his positional intelligence and ability to drop between the lines to link play and create. He also epitomises the cliched, “good feet for a big man”.

Burnley’s service to Weghorst did not suit him. Wood was a willing channel-runner and dominant aerially, but the Dutchman proved the opposite, struggling aerially for someone of his size in open play and preferring the ball to be played to his feet, with him enjoying dropping into pockets of space to receive possession and link play.

So, according to the Daily Mirror he's getting paid £120,000 a week? That can't be right can it? Should be "month" right?
For 120k I expect goals.

Also Daily Mirror reports that he is a boyhood United fan. That's not true, he supports Liverpool.

I can't imagine Burnley paid someone anywhere near that much money. It'll be more like half that at a maximum.

The wout, the wout, the wout is on fire

Actually, I can imagine United paying 120k to a loanee (Weghorst will earn as much as Martinez if that figure is true), but Burnley paying 60k a week salary? Of course Burnley want to loan him out and sell him.

Nah, when you loan player you don't pay them additionally to what they're already getting paid. We're covering the existing cost/wage of his contract at Burnley in full and that's it.

EDIT - sorry I misread what you're saying, yeah it would be unlikely Burnley pay 60K to him let alone 120K... his wage at Wolfsburg was around 40K apparently, so you'd imagine it's a bit more then that (50K-60K mark)

I would start wout. Arsenal's your typical Southern softies. A bit of elbows and they then to cower as proven in the past.

I'm actually really excited by this transfer.

Feels like it's been a long time since we have had a 'proper' striker and even longer since we have had one willing to put in the effort and chase down/press. On top of that, he's excellent positionally and has that X Factor of scoring goals. They aren't always pretty but they don't have to be! I think he'll slot into the team perfectly and hopefully get us 10+ goals in all competitions.

Aside from the pressing, that Article from the Athletic gives me slight Sheringham vibes…if he has anything like a similar effect on this team, we could be in for good times!

He was devastatingly effective against Argentina for exactly that reason. It's a good shout.

He a) adds traits that we need and b) fills a gaping hole on the roster as second-choice striker. You have to like him as a bench option too. EtH clearly thinks we need this kind of striker (as shown by earlier interest in Arnautovic too), and he's been right about these things so far. He's hardly a sure thing or an instant upgrade, but the main thing is I think that's the best we can reasonably hope to do given that we evidently can't spend any serious money in this window.

With that hole (hopefully) plugged, our main weakness is now that we do not have anyone who can play in Casemiros place who isn't an obvious and dramatic downgrade with repercussions for the functionality of the whole XI. Maybe Martinez will be given a go there?

Some Dutch outlet reported that the paperwork might not be done in time for him to play on Wednesday. Surely that's rubbish?

Don't think he'd be training if the paperwork wasn't done. Sounds rubbish indeed.

It would be FA/PL paperwork so he'd be able to train. He wouldn't be able to train without a work permit, which he already has after signing for Burnley.

That'd be a big surprise. So far EtH has consistently not given early starts to new arrivals - remember how long it took before Casemiro was starting? Even when players return from injury or other absences, he hasn't jumped at the first opportunity.

Martial is very good at holding up the ball and in link-up play generally, IMO.

It sounds ridiculous but this is Manchester United. If something can be dragged out, they'll drag it out.
