Its not always only about skills. Having someone with 150% effort on the pitch is forcing the lazy ones to give 20% more.
How shameful to have a mate who dies for your team while you have a sleep on the pitch at the same time.
Its a question of mentality change, at least I assume thats a big thing for the manager and was/is maybe his biggest task.

Look at Pogba, he was clearly more talented than what United has right now, but he made the team worse with his attitude.

In recent years, we've had Ibra, Falcao, Cavani and Ronaldo all up front but the best football we've played is with big Wout as our main man.

I thought he was excellent last night and deserved his goal. Id love him to be more clinical, maybe that goal will give him a boost. Other than goalscoring I find criticism of his all round play pretty unfair and think that if he had a different name or hadnt played for burnley, he wouldnt get those criticisms

Oh come on now, you honestly rate what he’s doing higher than Cavani or Ronaldo’s contribution? I really like Weghorst but let’s not get carried away.

His contribution is way higher than Ronaldo and he is completely different to Cavani.

Ronaldo gimped the whole team. Weghorst is the anti-Ronaldo. The team is first in his mind rather than not even a thought like it was with Ronaldo.

Cavani was good until his nose was put out of place.

To be fair that crazy Italian got his foot to like half a dozen of our chances tonight, including 3 or so of Weg's finishes.
It's certainly true for one of the chances, but I'm convinced a quicker striker puts two of them away before the defender even has the chance. Weghorst is painfully slow at everything he does.

Really pleased for him to finally get his OT goal but long term he shouldn't be getting a move to our club. He's plugged a gap for us in tough financial circumstances but I'd much rather have Kane, Toney, Osimhen in the summer.

Overall probably our second best striker (after Zlatan) since RvP. More goals will come, and he has some assists already, and if his teammates could finish he would have even more assists. I wouldn't mind him at all as a cheap backup behind the expensive starter.
Absolute nonsense.

Lovable player. He's exactly the character and worker you would want. In fact I think if you knew a new striker target had many of Weghorst's better attributes you'd be ecstatic, especially in terms of stamina, work rate, desire, pride to play. It's just the technicals you'd want to take a closer look at and make sure they're not also similar

You dare to mention he who must not be named? Weghorst is contributing 10x what Ronaldo did before Xmas.

His creativity in and around the edge of the opposition box is a lot better than I thought it would be. Would have more assists by now if it wasn’t for our standard crappy finishing.

Agreed, I'm surprised by the quality of his play around the area, should have had an assist on that tidy pass he put through to Antony.

He's such a weird player, looks awkward at times due to his size and has no short speed burst, but he presses hard and does a lot of dirty and creative work outside the area. Even his goal was calved in. I just can't help but root for him even if he isn't probably going to be here after the summer, because he does give it his all and I desperately want to see him bag more goals now, his effort deserves it.

Already added more than Martial so far this season. He's a good back up option for when we need some energy at the top. Offers something most forwards wouldn't be willing to do for the team.

To be fair, we probably shouldn’t be surprised considering the lovely pass he played in the build up to a goal scored against us when he was playing for Burnley!

Sometimes the contribution of a player is measured in a very different way to levels of skill, goals to game ratio etc. In the past we have had several players that, perhaps, were not as technically gifted as their teammates but were trusted by the manager to provide 100% effort and play exactly as directed every time they were in the starting lineup. Weghorst will be one of those I think, wouldn't build a team around him but his drive and desire to do well are something that his current team mates obviously appreciate given the reaction to his goal yesterday. Its also hard not to like the guy. At the moment hes filling a gap but as a back up option he would bring something a little different to the team

  • Like
Reactions: Cheimoon
If he was food he'd be a pot noodle
  • Functional and gives you energy, you get exactly what's advertised
  • Cheap but not bad. Valued fairly
  • Pot noodle in itself is nothing special. But if you add chopped coriander, thinly sliced spring onions, sliced red chillies, meatballs, etc. it becomes much tastier
  • You won't be talking about it with your posh food blogger friend, some people even think of it as a lower class food. But you'd rather have a pot noodle with you when you're hungry and there's nothing else to eat than not to have it
  • Too much of it is not beneficial for you, you need more nutrition and proper food to grow properly. It should never be your main source of energy. However it's okay to eat and enjoy it once in a while

I watched this video after we signed him and this is what I was expecting from him. The standard of finishing on display from him here is levels above what we've seen in a United shirt so far. Some good headers too. It gives me hope there's two or three more gears to find:

Wout Weghorst - All 14 Goals in 2020/21

I do like him despite his obvious flaws. He is contributing, if only he could start adding a few goals to that. I celebrated his goal last night more than any of the others. If nothing else it's great to see a player who has so much passion to play for the club.

And he would have more goals if he wasn’t so slow, could head the ball or actually finish.

That’s interesting. Goal 2 is the same goal he scored for Netherlands in the WC. Must have brought that routine with him from Germany.

And yeah, he’s obviously not confident in front of goal right now. Most strikers go through phases where they lose a bit of confidence and their finishing looks pretty poor. He’s obviously nowhere near as inept in front of goal as he’s looked in most of his games so far. Even though he may never be elite. You don’t score 14 in 20 in the Bundesliga if you can’t finish.

What I'm slightly confused about is how he scores 1 in 2 for Wolfsburg with the standard of finishing seen at United. That doesn't seem possible, quite frankly. Not unless he got a million chances per 90 minutes.

So something is going on there to explain that. Has his finishing regressed? The pressure at United? People say he is hard to create for at United, maybe - but we have seen chances missed. That isn't a matter of opinion, that's a fact, we have seen some routine ones go begging.

I don't have the answer, but I'm curious.

I loved seeing how much it meant to him. Fair play to him for the goal. Pleased for him. But he was not excellent, he wasted 2-3 clear goal scoring chances last night.

He will work until the end of the season. He will have to because of the Glazers not replacing Ronaldo. But after that we need a proper striker.

That said I hope he hits a purple patch from now and scores lots for us. His work rate and mentality are great. Its just his quality which seems more Burnley than United.

I said he was excellent with the exception of not being clinical. His all round game is of a high standard. Definitely need a new striker but few are arguing that it should be weghorst

It's hard not to like him because a) he gives his all and b) is clearly having the time of his life.

None of those is enough to be Manchester United's starting striker, which he currently is. Even so, he is getting every last drop out of this experience and that is admirable. I am not against keeping him next season if the fee is under £5 million. He needs to be the third choice and cover, someone who will come on late in games and give 100%. I do think he is not a bad option to have. Needs to have two quality strikers and Rashford ahead of him though.

He's very useful, puts a shift in, uses his body, sets people up, just needs to brush up on his finishing.

All of them were past their prime and played in a non-functional system more or less.
Wout is a mediocre player in his prime but he's playing in a good system and listens to the manager.
Imagine having a good ST with this current setup.

A lot of the goals he scored in Bundesliga were as a product (either directly or it fell down to him) of crosses being delivered into the box by their wingers.

Our crossing is.. eh.. well. It is what it is I guess. Should point it this is full season vs 2/3 of a season, but still.

The post I replied to said Weghorst is our best striker since Zlatan, which simply isn’t true.

He has 0.16 xG per 90 in the league, which isn't very high. He has still underperformed on it though. But the notion that he gets a ton of chances is not fully accurate.

Love the guy,i really do.Does a good job for the team, manager likes him and knows how to use him,he's just not the required standard going forward.Hope he proves me wrong.

Fantastic for Wout, a great moment for him, and witnessing and sharing that sense of relief when he celebrated is one of the moments of the season (in my opinion...). He is a decent player, a good footballer, makes good decisions and helps our forward play, and of course, a great attitude. But he's not the most clinical in front of goal, however... he has a record of one-in-two throughout much of his career, and I do think he will get a few more... not incredible numbers, but a few more. He has snapped at chances, and has looked, understandably, under pressure in front of goal. Hopefully that feeling has receded.

Btw, when Antony went to the left, and started crossing without faffing' around, did you notice how more dangerous he (and we..) looked??

Really hope we don't sign him permanently, this is getting concerning. His attitude is great, but then if I knew I was out of my depth and Burnley level, of course I'd be delighted to get to play for Manchester United

Not to open a discussion about him but I won't be surprised if #11 will brought back and Wout not getting a new contract. It will only require to bring a quality striker after we'll sell Martial also.

Currently flavour of the month, which I get, but wait till we need that crucial goal and he misses a sitter. Once the novelty has worn off, the normal Caf vitriol will resume, I'm sure.

Hard to believe we have to make do with him that’s my take. Across Europe he was it seems the best option when you’ve spent up. Hmmm
