I doubt Rashford, Greenwood, or Sancho have much to fear long term. Conte will always find a way to get talent on the pitch. I think the casualties will be some of your midfield players and possibly Ronaldo. Conte will demand everyone plays defense and presses.

I agree with this. If he's going to thrive anywhere it's with four other players there to do his job for him, whilst he hides from the ball, instead of one or two.
Are we talking about Van De Beek or McTominay here?

It would kind of fun to see Conte try to turn Sancho or Rashford into wingbacks a la Victor Moses.

I think if we do get Conte his style of football will surprise a lot of people, and a lot of people will be eating their words. World class manager and tactician.

"I did not have Zinedine Zidane or Roberto Baggio's talent as a player, and I have played with both, that even when they were circled they could try to break through or create interesting situations with the ball. When I was a player, my efforts and work-rate, my willingness to sacrifice fitness and humility made up for my lack of pure talent but sometimes, if I didn't find a teammate next to me, I might lose the ball. As a manager, my first thought from day one was that I wanted to find solutions for my players when the ball reached them, as I could not. If my players don't understand something, I force the player to ask me why we are doing such movement or working on certain tactics in training both offensively or defensively. I always want my players to be fully understanding of the problem. I want them to understand why we are doing certain things and why those things are useful."

Well the midfield is in dire need of a shakeup so nothing against that

The thing is...

Oles first xi could theoretically at least fit into that.

Mctominay,Varane,McTominay
Awb, Fred, Shaw
Rashford, Bruno, Pogba
Ronaldo

But, if he wanted go really do it, he could....

-----------rcb---cb-----lcb----------
Rwb----Cmr-----cml---------Lab
------------------CAM
----------STR----------STL----------

with Lindelof, varane, Maguire, dalot, Fred, pogba, telles, Bruno, Ronaldo, Rashford

Bailly, Mctominay, Shaw, Awb, donny, lingard, Greenwood, Cavani told to fight for their place. And rotated in.

Mata, Matic, Jones, all there to fill in but be replaced

No I meant in response to those saying we get Conte now. there’s no point hiring Conte now if he will leave after 2 years and then we go in a different direction again

Obviously if we could get Ten Hag now that would be my preference

Why would Ten Hag come here though? He has options at Ajax and an open table with Barca.

I reckon playing with only 9 outfield players would put us at a severe disadvantage every game.

The player of yours that I’m curious to see how Conte fits in is Bruno. Like if he uses the 3-4-3 he used when he was with us where could Bruno even play? Playing him in CM further away from the goal negates his biggest qualities and you’ll get killed defensively against top sides. And you’d probably have to partner him there with slow, old Matic.

If he comes it will be his test to get the best out of what we currently have. Including them wingers/wide players that are very talented and too good not to be used. I doubt he will ignore the quality in that area just because he mostly played as 3-5-2. We dont need another manager so hell bent in playing one formation instrad of trying to get the best of the resources. Cough... Ole.. cough.

Di Marzio doesn't say a deal has been struck to appoint Conte but rather he's on the list with other names like Zidane and initial contact has been made with Conte and his reps.

Neil Custis is reporting that Conte, Zidane, Rodgers and ten Hag are the 4 names on the short list, with a agent instructed to guage the plan each candidate has for the club going forward including contract terms.

1. He’s a cnut.
2. His CL record is appalling.
3. He has never dealt with the current level of competition in the PL in any of his jobs.
4. He will demand a long term contract which he will never see out.
5. He will demand full control of transfers.
6. His tactics are dated and shit to watch.
7. He won’t be able to accommodate Bruno and Sancho. It will be either / or.
8. He’s a cnut.

I spent two years hoping we'd get at least one explosive press conference like this one.

So from a rival fan point of view who do you think is the best fit for this current team out of Conte/Ten Hag, going to completely ignore Custis throwing Zidane and Rodgers names in the shortlist because no smoke at all

Why? VDS is a CEO not a DoF. Overmars is that at Ajax. VDS to replace woody would be my move and have his input into the next manager. I’d imagine his vote would be Ten Hag

It's a big stretch on a lot of moving parts, changing managers is hard enough but then to add someone who reports directly to a board that we fans don't see eye-to-eye with is damn near impossible.

Now that it seems like he's the one I'm starting to warm up to this idea

What happened with Conte after the title winning season at Chelsea?

I didn't watch much of Chelsea that season but one game sticks out in the memory: 1-0 defeat against City at the Etihad. At one point it looked like Drinkwater couldn't be bothered trying to win the ball back from City. Does this ring any bells? I recall thinking how defeated and insipid Chelsea looked at the time.

1. He’s a cnut. Who cares?
2. His CL record is appalling. The biggest negative he has.
3. He has never dealt with the current level of competition in the PL in any of his jobs. No one thought Chelsea were a Prem contender the 1st season he arrived. They blitzed the league.
4. He will demand a long term contract which he will never see out. Then he won't get the contract. Even if he doesn't see it out, who cares? Managers don't stay for 5 + years if they underperform.
5. He will demand full control of transfers. He won't want the board to sign players for marketability reasons only. Nothing wrong with that.
6. His tactics are dated and shit to watch. Not true. Hazard says Conte trains automations in attack. Jose did not. His sides are tactically astute. Far better drilled than anything Ole and our current coaching staff can dream of.
7. He won’t be able to accommodate Bruno and Sancho. It will be either / or. So? The club is bigger than those 2 players.
8. He’s a cnut. Again, who cares? SAF wasn't a saint either.

He’s not the perfect candidate and there are definitely better managers out there but we won’t get any of them at this point in time, and he could be our only option to save this season.

It does feel like the team doesn’t suit his usual playing style and tactics at all, with the lack of wing backs, no balance in midfield and multiple players that don’t fit the style he had usually preferred. I would hope that a top tier manager will find a way to overcome this without necessarily having to spend £250m to build another ‘new team’ that we would then have to dismantle within 18 months off his departure.

Serious question. How is he supposed to save this season ? Do you genuinely believe he would mount a title challenge this season because his CL record is pathetic. I don’t see the logic in this potential appointment from any angle.

That game annoyed me more than the 6-0 loss the following the season. Bizarre game.

I don't know much about Ten Hag to be honest with you. I've watched Ajax maybe a handful of times, and only in the CL. Conte at United is pretty scary though.

Aren’t Haavertz and Mount both attacking midfielders playing as inside forwards either side of Lukaku/Werner in a 3-4-3?

Bruno, Greenwood, Sancho, Martial, Rashford, Lingard, Mata, Amad, and Elanga will be competing for two starting positions basically, either side of Cavani/Ronaldo.

It’s currently like that anyway. Fitting three of them in with a Ronaldo/Cavani is causing us to be too open and unbalanced. I’d imagine even someone like Zidane would play with 2 of the forwards and a striker, along with three midfielders. I’m convinced that if Ole is here next week, he’ll replace one of the four attackers with a third midfielder in a proper 4-3-3, or with a defender in a 3-4-3, leading us to play with 3 of all our forwards/strikers only anyway. It was clear as day how unbalanced the team is vs Leicester and Liverpool.
