I haven’t really seen much of him since he left Chelsea but I don’t recall that team being overly defensive. I get the CAF has an issue with 3 at the back and somehow that makes it defensive automatically even if in reality it means we have the same numbers going forward as with 4 at the back.

It would probably screw a Sancho and Greenwood depending on what he decided to go with. 343 or 352 but you could have.

DDG
Lindelof Varane Shaw
Dalot — Fred. — Pogba —Telles
Bruno
Cavani Ronaldo

The combinations are endless with the players we have but my worry is although I think initially he’d be a great appointment he just seem like a Jose lite. I can see a short spell of 3 years and a not so nice fall out as he leaves. The days of managers doing more than 3 years might be done, and something we have to get used to with smart appointments but I personally would prefer a Poch or a Ten Haag who to me seem to view more long term projects.

I also don’t think the club will go down the route of a Hitman either like a Zidanne or Conte. Anyway, if Conte was who we brought in I wouldn’t be that fussed either way if I’m being honest.

Ugh the more I think about this the more I don’t want it.

Can we just get a caretaker in and just pull out all the stops to bring in Ten Hag this summer, please please please.
I'm dead certain most would prefer Ten Hag but the typical Glazer appointment is Conte.

Years of complaints that we don't play as good football as the likes of Guardiola and Klopp but people think Conte is the answer? Not for me.

I think we sometimes overrate the importance of playing a certain way, we need structure, clear tactics, and a proven serial winner. I am not the biggest Conte fan, but if its going to help us get our stuff together and stop conceding, so many goals, why the hell not. WE ARE DESPERATE

Rather Zidane because I feel like the players will respect him more and run through walls for him more than Conte. I think Conte will loose the dressing room pretty quick with his style and it will be similar to Mourinho.

  • Ronaldo - 36
  • Cavani - 34
  • De Gea - 30
  • Maguire - 28
  • Fred - 28
  • Pogba - 28
  • Varane - 28
  • Bruno - 27
The exact thing we need is a manager to focus on the immediate future and figure out how to get this team competing at the top (and winning). We aren't rebuilding anymore. We are at a win now period, and if you aren't fighting for the top during that window, you find a manager who will.

Cant we do both? find a manager that does well and is here for a longer period?

Many people said the same thing about Tuchel now look what he is doing boring football but winning mentality and working great with Chelsea!! We are screwed either way and if it's not Zidane then Conte will be a good choice

Ditto

He seems more of a throw back to the van gaal, Jose era. It's going to be dull football and there is really nothing to look forward in that
Van Gaal and Jose initally were lumbered with Rooney coming to the end of his career but had to start and some forwards that didn't settle in. Hopefully with the forwards we have right now there's no need to sign anyone and our attacking play can still be productive.

Pep and Klopp are both in the top six managers for 'time in current job' in English League football. Whatever is happening to the average, top clubs should always aspire to long-term appointments

Those saying it will be dull football. I would rather us win a dull game 1-0 or 2-1 then take L's from goofy ass Liverpool and walk off the pitch down 4-0 at halftime.... jeesh!!!!

Conte and Ronaldo together wouldn't end well at all.

I'm surprised in general that so many seem for Conte. It's very dangerous to have an "anyone but Ole" mentality. I would rather get the right man in May than the wrong man now. Conte is without question the wrong man.

It’s the style of football and his short term focus that’s the primary cause of concern I think. I think we just finally want to watch United play fluid attacking football again, bringing in Conte feels like we’d regress to the LVG/Mourinho days of tumescent ball.

But Solskjaer's team plays a worse brand of football than Conte. I never understood this consensus I think many need to watch Conte's teams over 90mins (Chelsea Vs City) and watch the recent performances of Ole even last season over 90 mins and draw a comparison.

Solskjaer is no doubt a conservative manager who's forced to play on the front foot because of the club he's employed to. Conte plays with a much better infrastructure compared to Ole win from, he's a superior coach, defensively astute and has the mentality of a winner. He's by far and away good enough to take the club forward. I agree with sentiments about his long term tenure but for 12-24 months he's a good choice.

You can't predict either of these things but you can try to sign a manager that he is able to do well with the current team.

Sadly this is the problem with him. It could go incredibly well for maybe a season but it could also go downhill even quicker.

100% agree, the next appointment is absolutely crucial. Get it wrong then we're going to start nose diving like we did under LvG.

Planning for something long term just doesn't make sense right now though. It's fine when you are about to do a complete rebuild. We are at a point where the only thing we need to prioritize is this year, next year and the year after. Of course, you do this without financially fecking the club long term (Barcelona...) but of course we should only prioritize right now. Look at the players we have. Conte gives us a great chance at that. And there's nothing that says he'll leave us in a bad state long term, it's just a case of the board usually letting him down so he leaves. We know our board has issues but nobody can say they don't back their managers in the transfer market and that they tend to not get involved in footballing affairs. That's stuff Conte would probably like.

Go back to 2018 when Ole took over, we needed a manager to come in, stabilize, rebuild with a view on competing seriously in a couple of seasons. It wasn't a good squad. That's not the case right now. It's a good squad. It's a win now squad. We get the best manager to win now.

You don't go hiring an employee assuming he will be with you for their whole career. That is baseless and stupid. You hire the best one out there who suit your needs TODAY. Then take it from there year on year.

This absolutely mind-numbingly brain dead notion that we need to hire someone for an eternity is what is killing us now. How many top club who have been successful have had managers stay with them for more than 5 years. There's only a handful at best. And they keep their manager because they have proven that they are winners, not due to some notion of romanticism.

Conte may not be the perfect fit, but I will take a world class manager who may need to spend than someone who doesn't know his arse from his elbow when it comes to setting up teams because of the "United DNA" and other tripe like that.

Who said eternity? im talking more than 2-3 years.

And dont put words in my mouth,i never bought into this united DNA crap.

Those saying it will be dull football. I would rather us win a dull game 1-0 or 2-1 then take L's from goofy ass Liverpool and walk off the pitch down 4-0 at halftime.... jeesh!!!!

Some of our fans are thick as shit. How is getting outplayed by second string teams and getting smashed by the dippers "entertaining" ? Its not like were a wonderful attacking team cutting through our opponents at will.

This is a turd we have to swallow bois and girls. Lets get him as a quick fix while we agree with Ten Haag to come next within the next two years!

We are a top heavy squad, with amazing players like Ronaldo, Cavani, Sancho, Rashford, Greenwood etc. Playing a 3-5-2 would be a criminal move. Also a 3-4-3 would mean Bruno is out.

If Conte comes here, I think he would play a 4-3-3 which he did use with Chelsea at times.

Serial winner with a proven record of extracting the absolute maximum out of his players, who will implement some much needed minimum standards of performance and mentality from his players and who will ensure every member of the squad gets a tactical education.

What's not to like?

A lot of our players will run more in one Conte training session than they have in any match this season.

Before calling people thick as shit maybe you should learn the difference between we're and were.

Problem with Conte is that he only has one way of playing and once that is sussed out then he doesn’t have a plan b to counter that.

Look at his Chelsea reign as an example. 1st season - wins the league but 2nd season everyone has his formation and tactics sussed out and know how to get the better and outsmart him and his side.

Also similar to Jose, he completely lost the dressing room and ailenated his players when things began to turn to shit hence how he was sacked.

We dont have the best team to play 5-3-2 in my opinion. There are more suited managers around with the players we have than Conte.

Like i said many times in this thread mate, i dont think we have the players needed for 5-3-2 like Conte loves to play. I might be wrong but do you think we would thrive playing 5-3-2?

Exactly, Solskjaer plays dire defensive shitball without the tactical nous.

And Conte has used more than a 352. But that's beside the point that you made or the point that I made about long term.

What's more than 2-3 years though? I would rather 3 years of success and then a turnover than wait 5 years going through mediocrity and praying for a miracle.

It's because many don't observe rival teams aside perhaps reading stats and highlights. When Chelsea won the league under Conte they were very good on the offensive.

The United fan mentality is because we've had spells with Mourinho and Van Gaal that didn't end well, we should never look for a top manager again.

I think the arguement has been that there's no guarantee things will improve by appointment a big name, and LVG and Jose are used as examples.

Sure a big name might come in and do well, but it's still a roll of the dice and hope for the best. Obviously after the recent games most are going to be happy to roll the dice and that's more than understandable, particularly after the nightmate yesterday.

Personally I think as a fanbase we need to accept that it's going to take something exceptional to overcome Pep's City and Klopp's Liverpool - it pains me to say it but they are both brilliant.

I think top 4 is probably a realistic ceiling level for United for the next 2 years - regardless of who is managing United. That's clearly unpopular but I think we're going to have to suck it up and if that's the case whoever we have in charge I hope the just play with a bit of style and give us some entertainment.

It’s all fun and games until he sends Ronaldo a text message saying he’s surplus to requirements. He’s that kind of a wild card.

Unlike Jose, Conte is still managing at a high level as evidenced by his title win with Inter. Yes he’s like Jose in that he’s a short term solution, but he’s far from done. We should’ve stayed far from Jose after his Chelsea meltdown.

Going from a possession based approach to Mourinho's approach is a huge huge jump. Ofcourse that's a problem. Ole doesnt have much of a defined style, so its easier for the next manager to stamp his style on the team rather than start from scratch, and I'd rather we have someone who plays attacking modern football, and not someone like Conte, who is another Mourinho. I'd say our current style of play(atleast last season) is closer to attacking than pragmatic, and I'd want us to lean more in that direction than undo all of that.
If the players are of a high calibre they will adjust easily to systems as long as they are drilled properly. This thinking that players can only play certain systems is bizarre. These are a group of international superstars who can be moulded quickly with the right guidance. Too much is made of how we are moving from one system to another. It only hampers when you buy players of inferior quality. Buy top players, like we have done mostly, and they will show their true potential under any good coach irrespective of the system they deploy.
