We need a new left back, right winger and central defender. Right wing is obvious, but as hard as Shaw trys he'll never be an effective attacking option. Lindelof is just crap and has been for most of the time we signed him.

Will be extremely surprised if the Glazer's open the cheque book for even one of those.

Yeah I don't really care about the house thing it was a throw away comment that you seem really invested in analysing to death.

Everything just cost about 10-20m more.

Ed is going to get squeezed after the hysteria from a performance like that.
 
Even if we can't get our top targets we just need to get some players through the door.

I don't particularly care for it, either, but I have seen a few of these comparisons that aren't really comparable - apologies if you think I'm picking/digging you out. Not the intention.

I think if you get told what is what, you can probably test that water a bit, but as the interested and persistent party, it's then time to pony up or go about your business instead of loitering like a bad smell whilst the homeowner ( ;) ) peers through their window wondering what they've got to do for you to leave them alone.

Further to that, of the two parties, we're the more desperate - less assured of even being a top 4 finishing side this season than Sancho of either maintaining or improving his level. We could very easily be prizing Sancho out of our own hands should we not get him this window, have a calamitous one whilst he goes on to cement himself as one of this generation's sure things. It's not a one-way street here where ceteris paribus means we just continue this merry dance next summer.

Hoping Sancho (long shot) will put pressure on Rashford not being an automatic selection.

I honestly think Dan James is probably slightly better on the left than Rashford. At least he can put in a half decent delivery in internationals.

Rashford has been horrific for months now.
 
There's no chance for us to do anything this season if we don't strengthen. Blindingly obvious. No, Ole isn't amazing or anything, but if we at least beef up the team then we can build a bit. As it is, I wouldnt be surprised to see any to all of Arsenal, Spurs, Wolves, Leicester and Everton finish ahead of us. Thats not even considering the obvious top 3 of liverpool, city and chelsea. Just tragically no hope unless Woodward and the Glazers pull their finger out.

And let's not forget that Sancho has not been pulling up trees in trying to leave Dortmund. Clearly he doesn't want to upset Dortmund by demanding a transfer but his timidity is costing him and us the transfer. If he really wants to come then he could agitate for a move. It would make things a lot easier for us. As it stands, it's not blindingly obvious if he even wants to join us.

We look very much unwilling to pay the fee Dortmund want; I can't blame Sancho for wanting to remain on good terms with his club and its fans. From his perspective, you could say that it looks like Manchester United don't want him enough.

Yes, indeed there is that, too. He's interested but keeping his options open whilst burning no bridges, which mightn't be the case next summer, especially if we've under-performed and are less appealing than now.

Not only that, we have to pay more to the player as a non-CL club to entice him.
 
Hate to say it but a pacy CB has just become even higher priority than Sancho. Maybe we should look at going for something like

CB Upamecano because still think they sell for the right price

Yep. And we knew that all along. Could have gone for Sancho, Upamecano and Telles and we would have been sorted. For whatever reason we decided to get a midfielder and nobody else though.

All this was obvious and evident the moment the season ended and Ole was literally hammering home that same point each time he was in front of a microphone but for some odd reason, all we've done is sign MF cover and nothing else as those around us strengthened...

A not brilliant coach and not making necessary signings is asking for trouble.
 
Tough to watch that tonight, could have been so much worse too. Really seemed too slow an lethargic. 100% CB needed, Shaw was poor but no worse than the rest. Brunos worst performance so I'd go in order of priority CB, RW, LB
 
Surprise, surprise... all of our major weaknesses were exposed again today... no power/fight/leadership in DM, centre back partnership being slow and one-dimensional, left back absolutely zero quality going forward (final pass or cross just dreadful or non-existent), nothing on the right wing (James is in desperate need of a loan to give him consistent game time) not helped by the left wing looking weak now also, and no alternative option up front (would be nice to be able to bring someone into the team who can hold the ball up and muscle defenders when needed). Its so disappointing that it is clear where the problems in the team are yet there seems to be no strategy in place as to how to resolve these. In my opinion most of these areas (apart from maybe centre back) can be addressed relatively easily without spending crazy money. Surely it cant be that difficult either to move 3 or 4 of the players in the squad out who aren't good enough - personally I would move on Jones/Roja as priority, Smalling and Mata to generate a little income and save on wages.

I'm not sure I agree, I don't think we should be compromising on quality. Ole waited for Bruno rather than getting Eriksen or whoever and it looks inspired.

Even if it means doing absolutely nothing this season, I'd rather we get quality targets rather than just more bodies. We aren't going to be good in either of those scenarios, only scenario we are good in is if Ole is backed by the board and that ship is close to sailing
 
Feels very similar to Arsenal during their years of constantly finishing in the top 4 and not spending money to challenge for the league. They would always have a horror start the following season as though it was some kind of message to the board. Remember that Villa game in 2013? Never seen Arsenal fans so angry.

We need to invest in a couple more players otherwise we risk becoming a team who can’t even compete for the top 4. It’s a slow process as I’ve mentioned previously in this thread but we’re already playing catch-up now. Dan James starting our first game is beyond a joke.

Only issue with this is, we presumed to have waited to get top 4 to get our first choice RF. We will struggle getting top 4 with this team, so our first choice RF will have to be 2nd/3rd on the list. Only reason I got excited for top 4. haha! now it seems everyone is right about the pattern our board seems to be happy fluctuating from 4-6 as long as we don't stay 6 for more than a few years they're good.
 
I wonder if Ed paid any attention to the match today. We have 3 forwards at our disposition. Rashford, Martial, Greenwood.

we need a cover/competition for all 3 positions.
Rashford has clearly been slacking since the end of last season.
 
So, where we at?
We still need to sell romero, smalling, jones, rojo, lingard, perreira, dalot. Apart from smalling not an ounce of reliable news linking them anywhere.

Ighalo will go in January so we will need a striker.

Added to that we need RW, LB, CB, CDM, RB backup. And a few other back up positions as our squad depth is rubbish.

Mata needs to go too, still many questions on the likes of James, McT, TFM, Fred whether they will cut it at utd, but will be squad options.

We really are in a pickle, cause you know we apparently affected by covid 19, aka glazers taking money.

What a freaking mess
 
I've always felt CB was as important as RW this summer - if not more... And today just reaffirmed that.

Yeah with a quality CB we could have scraped a draw in a game where we created feck all.

Attack has been United's main weakness ever since Fergie left. We struggle to create chances and score goals. In the past seven seasons, we couldn't break the 70 goal mark in the league once. Not once.

I hope you watched the match against Palace today. Unfortunately, we will see a lot more of these types of games throughout the season. We simply don't have players who will take the game by the scruff and will the team to a win. We needed players like Bale and Thiago, no matter how well we are equipped at that position. We simply don't have those types of players. Bruno can only do so much by himself before he overdoes everything.

I said that here a few weeks ago if Thiago had a choice, he would choose Liverpool every time, unfortunately, and got blasted for that. If it came down to winning stuff, players would choose Liverpool. If it came down to money, then maybe we have a chance. Our fans need to understand that we are not the same attraction as before, or until we start winning trophies again.

I understand our policy of signing younger players with holier than though attitudes. But sometimes you need experience in the team to help the youngsters start winning and producing on a regular basis. I knew the signings of Falcao, Schweini would be a disaster because they were a shell of their former selves. Di Maria, I got totally wrong as he simply did not want to be here or play under LVG. That is why you look deeper into transfers when you want to sign a player. They have to have a desire to come here and play. Thiago I knew would not come after Liverpool went after him. Bale I am sure would have. No harm in a season-long loan with Madrid paying half his wages. If he regains fitness, he will be a huge asset to Spurs this season and could have been for us.

Astute purchases wouldn’t cost us £220mil.

Sancho is a anomaly, he’s a generational talent but Telles/the Spurs lad are going for £20-£30mil & deBeek wasn’t a huge fee either.

The trouble with United is we pay £80mil for a CB we could have done reasonable business each of the few summers previous & buy a RB with one season of first team football for £50mil then want to bleat about value in the market.

If you appraise our squad we don’t need £200+ mil to make marked improvements; yet for some reason there’s an agenda that ‘everyone costs too much so we’re better off not buying anyone’ which is nonsense.

The truth is Luke Shaw is on a huge wage so justifying signing a replacement is difficult financially. We’ve also spent huge amounts on CB dross in the past half decade & start a CB pairing [as poor as they are] that cost over £100mil combined each week, again difficult to justify more spend there.

The RW position is the one that really gets me though; we knew Dortmund wanted £100mil+ for half a year yet brief as if it’s some shock. Greenwood is a talented teen so has papered over the cracks but I refuse to swallow that in world football there is no other RW/Attacker other than Sancho that is available & could improve us more than Dan James/Igahlo do for less than the Sancho cost.
