Workrate

For the umpteenth time RR has said we need to show more physicality. It's just a nice way of saying our players need to stop being lazy arses and start putting in a shift.

The one thing that you don't have to worry about with our women's team is work rate, they all run their socks off for the badge, they are the true inspiration here, the men's side could learn a heck of a lot by watching all of them.

I am so angry.

Not good reading but is this why we lost? We dominated the game with 67% possession but as usual, we struggle to break teams down with a low block. As De Gea said, "we don't score, we don't even create proper chances to score". You could argue that we don't do enough running off the ball when in possession, which would obviously up our running stats, but I believe it's because we lack quality and the structural play to create chances against organised teams. De Gea went onto say "we're not good enough, that's for sure".

Without enough movement it is easy to stay organised. Against lazy attackers every defense looks organised.

De Gea says it clearly they had more desire than us. Fitness and mentality are linked in high level sports.

10 km is shocking though especially considering they had a midweek game.

Difficult to make top 4 eh Dave? You must be joking. He's clearly not happy but his anger is on par with Mata's hugs. Toothless.

I dont think our players are lazy off the ball - not in possession anyway. Rashford is constantly running in behind but no one finds him. To me, it's more of a structural problem that has been an issue for years now.

I would pay a lot of money to hear his sincere opinion on this lot of players.

Pogba, Matic, Ronaldo, Mata and Sancho will not outrun any team in the PL. Anyone who thinks so should have zero influence over footballing matters at our club.

Rashford makes one type of run which usually requires a top class pass to find him. Bit like the Bruno one today. We all know the run.

But outside of that does he move much? He seems to prefer to be the one who makes the pass. There are none of those short bursts that defenders don't like.

I think they are but it's especially bad when they are defending. Hard to rely on anything but the eye test to prove it though.

Gonna be honest. I've never seen a group of players as unwilling to work on a pitch as this United side. No energy on the ball, no energy off the ball. Players don't make runs they just stand around waiting for someone to do some magic or for Fred to do their defending for them. Its genuinely disgraceful and for a long time was enabled by many in the media sticking up for them.

Gary Neville: Rashford can't press, he's not that type of player being an example. Shit like that has convinced them they don't have to do the ugly stuff.
He has two legs, he's young and he's fit, of course he can press Gary, he's just fecking lazy.

The amount of times one of your players will have the ball on the wing and the others will just stand there, not underlapping or overlapping, not busting a nut to receive the ball is disgusting. Whoever comes in, is gonna have to fire out a lot of your squad. Rashford, Ronaldo, Pogba (literally the opposite for France) are talented but super lazy, all need to leave.
Matic, Mata and Cavani are practically finished from age. Maguire, Shaw, AWB, Lindelof, Bailly, Lingard, Telles, Jones, McTominay and Dalot aren't good enough for Man United.

There's at least 16 players in your squad that shouldn't be there. Probably would have been easier to name the players who should stay. DDG, Telles, Elanga, Sancho, Varane and Fernandes (if he starts trying to play no.10 and stops trying to play referee again.) Whoevers in charge of recruitment shouldn't just be fired but also banned from ever coming within 10 miles of Old Trafford again.

Are you a City fan? Just asking as if this is an outside point of view it’s good to hear. Good post. Agree 100% of what you said.

Yup, being bluntly honest but one thing I always admired about United under Sir Alex was even when they hadn't the best team, there was a never say die and never surrender attitude. Players like Rooney had talent but worked super hard, early Ronaldo too. Not to mention players like Park and Fletcher who weren't the most gifted but never lacked effort. This current team its hard to watch (it should be funny to me but its not). Maybe its because all football seems to be turning in to players who just don't care anymore and United and PSG are the two places where it looks worst.

I agree with all of this.

The rebuild required now is off the charts. Ten Hag or Poch won't even see us lift a trophy because the level of outgoings, paired with our inability to sign enough players, will mean it will get worse before it gets better. And I don't think any manager will survive what's coming. The one after that might reap the rewards of solid groundwork, if that even happens.

When I read things about Ten Hag wanting to assess the squad himself next season, I just feel sorry for him. Because we all know this unsuspecting guy that is on the rise as a manager, is about to shoot himself in the foot and ruin his reputation in the process.

I wouldn't say worse but its going to plateau for a bit unless the Glazers decide 200m a season as a budget or something

 Ten Hag would be the first time we've appointed a modern manager in his prime after Fergie retired. Relax.

This is so spot on and yet some of us have been saying it for 5 years or even longer but were branded 'negative'.

Watching United for a City fan must feel like how it felt for a United fan to watch Arsenal towards the end of Wenger's reign and them getting 8-2'd.

Yeah not to be an asshole but after a certain point its become surreal instead of funny. I remember City losing 8-1 to Middlesbrough in Sven's last game before the takeover. It was the most annoyed I ever was watching City and I've seen us in league 1 with a team that barely knew how to kick a ball. No one gave a feck and they were smiling and jogging around.

You don't mind poor or not good enough, but players not putting a shift in or the required effort is the worst thing to watch as a supporter. Its why I'd take 15 Timo Werners over 15 Lukakus. It's like theres a million people (in Uniteds case millions) all over the world who would run themselves into the ground for the shirt and half the XI that are chosen to do it, just can't be arsed. Must be infuriating for you guys after Keane and Rooney etc.. who'd probably die to win.

Couldn’t agree more mate. Spot on word for word.

Andy Townsend summed it up when he said he does not see a team in Manchester United.

Did Gary really say this? Why on earth would he say Rashford is not that kind of player?

Constant movement and running creates gaps in low blocks. That's how city and Lpool win.
United players are like a fecking Subbuteo team. Static and predictable

I'd send my local u19s out with a plan to beat them

Because Neville is a fool.

There are zero excuses for Rashford not to press and run his socks off. He's not Messi(from a few years ago) where you give him some leeway because of his insane attacking production.

I have no idea, I believe it was after or maybe before the derby game. I couldn't believe no one called him out on it. Salah isn't a natural presser like say Mane but he still presses. Maybe he didn't wanna knock the lad as he's struggling but I just remember thinking, if he's made press or sit out like Aguero was, he'll soon start to press.

United had more possession, is that a symptom of that I wonder? Does the team that has less possession run more in the game usually? And if so what would the normal km difference be?

yes because we were fecking around with the ball among our defenders, while they ran back into position.

Yep spot on. Said the same during the match.

The Everton goal was perhaps the most comical in the lack of movement and cohesion, we all stopped in the middle with full control then telegraphed a pass to Matic who was hounded by three Everton players, lost it and they broke to score. Some blame one player or another but if we were working as a team to help each other make passes the goal never happens and we'd create better with defenders having less time set up. Ronaldo did get in some good scoring positions but Everton with our slow telegraphed style of football simply knicked the ball away before it landed to him each time he was shaping up to score.

We've made many bottom teams look good due to our inaction.

I dont think our players are lazy off the ball - not in possession anyway. Rashford is constantly running in behind but no one finds him. To me, it's more of a structural problem that has been an issue for years now.

Gung ho Bruno always looking for the spectacular rather than the best for the team. Noticed several times he messed up good opportunities by rushing or doing the wrong thing when he had a moment to think about his options..

Furthermore why don't we move the ball quickly enough to get it in the box before a million defenders block off the area with bodies?. Why are we so slow to attack?. Awb is utterly awful and really prohibited any cohesion from his whole side..

Where can we find the distance covered stats? I have checked with most football statistics websites and I can't seem to find any sites providing this stat

Gegenpressing with Ronaldo as the striker. Dear oh dear.

That's not even trying to say anything bad about Ronaldo - more that we don't have a long term plan.

There was this moment. Rashford was 5 yards away from the passer. He just jogged towards him while he weighed his options comfortably and then passed without ever being worried about Rashford pressing him.
That sums up Rashford for the last 2 years. He just seems completely disinterested. Maybe his heart is not in it anymore.

He is a talented player but he just doesn't seem like he wants to work hard for the team anymore. Time to say goodbye as that's best for both the club and the player.

Why are you trying to shoehorn a comment about the womens team into every discussion about the mens? Your fawning looks a bit silly and its completely out of place.

Yep, agree here…it’s just tragic

Excellent post.

We have fitness issues for ages. We can bring Kante and turn him to a Canteen. At least Anderson he could last 45 minutes but he would actually run in these 45 minutes.

We changed the whole team and still we have the same problem. The problem is bigger than the players and the coach. It is about club, a club lead without philosophy, without heart and ambition. If the management does not want to win anything, the players won't give their best.

Lazy may be the wrong word. They are just unwilling to work hard. They need a kick up the ass from Roy Keane.

For all his flaws Ralf is the first manager in years to try that approach and we’ve seen Rashford put a shift in during a few games this season.

Which made it all the more mind-blowing to think how long the likes of him, Martial and Greenwood were allowed to not put in that bare minimum of effort and still get picked. We’re seeing it now with Martial at Sevilla. Another club/manager horrified at the work ethic he’s been getting away with at United.

It’s all so weird. How does a manager let that happen? Especially when Ole set his cards out very early on that we would never be out-worked by another team? He had all the GPS data to hand. Why the feck wasn’t he acting on it?
