It's been quiet for too long. It seems like it takes us forever to close a deal which I wonder why. With Herrera and Shaw we had months of preparation. We might negotiate for every penny which drags on or the big guys are not so keen on United

Sure isn't the club telling us we have an unlimited budget to spend as much as we want ?

Unless:

  • The club doesn't value a player at the price being offered
  • The player may not have a decent resale value
  • The club simply doesn't want to stump up cash for major signings
  • The club doesn't think that there are any players better then the ones we have
  • The club thinks the team is good enough to challenge for the league title while all our rivals have strengthened since finishing double digits ahead of us in the league

But of course, since Woodward is saying there is no set transfer budget, then we can all rest assured that there will be some more major signings. our new manager already stated that the squad is unbalanced and that he will assess the team before making signings. Even LVG couldn't think that this squad will win the EPL!

So don't fret lads, the money is there, we have an ambitious manager and a club that will spend whatever it takes to get us back on top. Just sit back and wait for the top players to roll in . .

Edit: Think this was too subtle to be recognised as sarcasm!

Until such time as Woodward brings a truly gobsmacking transfer into United, then we can really disregard his comments about there being no budget. We have no idea how true the rumours are concerning Vidal and Hummels, but I look at Real Madrid: Kroos, Rodriguez, no fuss, transfers concluded.

I am still firmly in the "sack him" camp, for reiterating how filthy rich we are, producing nothing but hot air.

He reminds me of a kid at school, in January, boasting about his Christmas presents, but never bringing them in to show you. :D

Woodward.....prove me wrong.

Done, dusted, easy. Kroos was a bargain, the kind we haven't found for many years.

He did sign Shaw and Herrera though. Getting Vidal or Hummels would be a bonus.

Until he backs up his claims we should take every thing he says with a pinch of salt. I don't see why he felt the need to say "watch this space" in that interview especially when there isn't no big name players to sign and we end up with De Jong and Vermaelen.

He says he checks social media to see what fans are saying.....he probably should stay away from it come the end of the transfer window.

Herrera was a buyout, Shaw wanted to come and we still paid a lot of money. The latter will prove to be worth it, but he was no bargain.

I still haven't seen Woodward putting his money where his mouth is and I believe we won't see it this summer. I fear too many will buy into LvG's ability to make silk purses out of some manky old pig's ears.

Shaw and Herrera were not marque signings, although I think they were excellent signings.

Agreed.

However, we need more than big signings; I would take some middle of the road signings, pricewise, of some really talented youngsters in the positions we need to fill.

Well, we have until the end of the transfer window to decide. Shaw and Herrera were necessary purchases, albeit not shrewd signings. I wouldn't be impressed with him until he manages to get us some truly good deals, but I don't find him incompetent either.

Just somewhat verbose, without ever delivering the content.

for me its quite simple - the squad has some obvious deficiencies that need to be solved. If Woodie delivers the players we need (CB, LB cover, CM, wide man) then we can expect a proper challenge for trophies.

However if Woddie fails to deliver then we should not be expecting such challenge.

Im sure Woodie is aware of that- he can't afford to have another season without CL football.

So what I'm trying to say is simple - either CL football or hes gone. If he fecks up another transfer window then he should be pushed away from football part of United and focus on sourcing money.

I do trust Van Gal is better than Moyes but still or squad is worse than Arsenal, Chelsea or City's. We will be competing with Liverpool, Spurs and Everton for the 4th.

That is why I'm calm as feck and dont get excited about transfer gossips.

He did sign Shaw and Herrera though. Getting Vidal or Hummels would be a bonus.

He did a bare minimum and as i said earlier- these transfers were relativelly easy to pull out. Herrera', bar complicated administrative work which im sure was done by lawyers, was basically transferring money on Bilbao's account. Shaw's was just throwing money on Southampton.

Agreed 100%.

Even with competent manager we are not finishing in top 3 with this squad.
Im expecting an ugly scrap fight for the 4th.

Studdie will look a bit foolish if we don't pull out a big singing but atm it doesnt look like we will.

As things stand, City and Chelsea are definitely ahead, barring a huge leap in the development of our central defenders and huge improvement in midfielders not called Herrera. I think Arsenal will be in the fight for the other two places with us and Liverpool. But there is still time to get a defender and a midfielder...

He hasn't done enough yet. We still need a CB and a CM. Until he does that he's done half a job.
It's not Woody's remit to identify targets that's Van Gaal's job and he looks like he meant what he said about waiting four weeks to assess what he has first, so what's Woodward to do ? Force signings down LVG's throat ? So far LVG hasn't pinpointed areas he'd want to strengthen or names we should bring so I don't see exactly what Woodward should deliver...

Even Van Gaal himself admitted that we're short in defensive line. Playing Fletcher and Carrick there against teams like LA Galaxy is sufficient but should be no brainer for Woodward that we need to push for upgrades before his and our 'to be or not to be' season.

The worst thing is that nobody knows who's on that wish list but that didn't stop Woodward from showing off in the interview by saying that we have money for every footballer on the globe. We still know nothing and there's still no clarity from the chairman that we are indeed doing something in that direction.

I'm seriously hoping that after Roma friendly Louie will be more advanced in his Manchester United vision and tell Woodward to push for definitive moves. The formation works and his new system is a true masterpiece of football architecture but as other folks in thread said - Woodward still has something to prove on the market.

With solid amount of funds that we have Louie can build something even more epic... something that will be finally worthy of the size of this club.

Seeing is believing. Thousands of interviews won't change that.

Herrera wasn't a buy out was he? I thought there was some complicated system where if you actually meet a buy out you end up paying a good dose more in taxes?

He didn't have to say anything, as simple as that.
It's not even as if he was saying something impressive to land another sponsorship deal.
It didn't even sound like he was talking theoretically.

It was quite clear, watch this space/

We're watching, and we're now 21 days away from the first game!

At this stage I'll be delighted if we just don't dump our money on Cavani.

That can't happen.
Unless he's planning something mental like Cavani and VP up front, Mata off them, and Rooney next to Herrera!

That'd be real fantasy football!

He's really not doing himself any favour! Now clubs won't sell to United unless we write fat cheque even players do not warrant it.. Shut up Woody! The media attention crave has gotten the better of him now.

It is the same has saying, we can go to america and pay to go to world disney, but will we though?

I do think the club are paying the price for haggling over the years, picking david moyes cost us CL football, and in the end the calibre of players we can go for is not quiet there. I think its time the club worked harder bringing players through the academy, and the scouts working harder finding these gems, instead of going for the obvious which we will not get

I genuinely think it's gone quiet because van Gaal has told him to hold his horses. Van Gaal has said he wants to have a good look at the squad on tour.

Wouldn't be surprised if we didn't quite a bit of late business.

It's all pressure created by himself, doubtful he'll deliver too much between now and the of the transfer window but you never know.
If he came out and said "I can only sign the players the manager wants" then I think people would be much more understanding. It's when he's going on about unlimited budgets and whatnot that people start to get their hopes up.

well it's 3 weeks to the first game now, and 5 weeks In total left.

Sounds plenty, but these days don't half zoom away. World cup feels ages back now.

I'm going to try and reserve judgement until all our business is done, but right now it ain't looking good.

Technically you are right now, but do you honestly think we aren't at least going to look for another CB? It's far more likely.

We might be and if we aren't then we should be because relying on the ones we have right now is a ticking time bomb. I'd give it till October before we see a central defensive trio of Keane, Fletcher and Shaw, if we do not get off our backsides right now.

All fair points, but then why the 'watch this space' comment. He needs to stop talking.

He's a tit.

Should have shut his mouth. Now he raised expectations of big signings and how we can pay big transfer fees.
