Winter Olympics 2010 Vancouver

Looking back, my pre-tournament rankings:

1. Russia
2. Canada
3. Czech Republic
4. Slovakia
5. Finland
6. Sweden
...

Amazing how Russia fell

No USA among the top 6?

Is that because you're Canadian?

No I actually didn't fathom them being this good, it's essentially a flip-flop of Russia and the USA, I had them 7th FWIW.

The US team wasn't given a fat chance to even medal and I had to agree with the medias common valuation of the team, their heart has eclipsed the team "on paper" and i've been thoroughly impressed by them.

Ok.

I have no idea myself. I just thought they were always good. I sort of think of you guys and the USA as the Brazil and Germany of hockey. Teams that are always good, and always to be reckoned with.

In percentage, do you know how many players of the NHL are from what countries?

The USA are always in the mix of things but never actually have that end product to win multiple tournaments... They develop alot of good players, but not too many great players... This is a team of good role players and they've developed so quickly they might just be the favorite, chemistry is key.

Canada hold over half of the players in the NHL (I think 56%) and the Americans posess another quarter or so... the rest are Czechs, Swedes, Russians and Finns

I was close

Thanks.

Funny to see that the Bahamas have actually had an NHL player. How did that work out?

Andre Deveaux, he's a bit of a bruiser (Adds up the penalty minutes) in the Leafs organization (He played 25 games with Toronto last year actually)... He was actually the victim recently of racial abuse and ended up throwing a roll of tape in the crowd at the heckler (Some bloke leaned over glass and called him an ape and a monkey, despite the fact he's aas light-skinned as most white people), got suspended 3 games for it, funny how that works... The story didn't get much attention what with all the Olympic coverage.

He's having his best season of his career and there's a few people who are bidding for a call-up for him.

I brought this subject up at work today. I can't name a single American player on the squad except Miller and that's due to his sudden media popularity after the Canada game. There's not a single standout player on the side. Certainly lacking in star power of the old days (Hull, Chelios, Modano, Richter, Leetch). The only other name I heard on SC that I know of is Langenbrunner. When he's the "big name" something is wrong. But if it works as a unit then something great can come from it (ala 1980).

It's eerie how similar this team is to that 1980 team (Other than the fact these guys are millionaires)

They do have some players on the brink of stardom, Patrick Kane, Bobby Ryan, Jonathan Quick & Paul Stastny (Who is Canadian might I add )... But when you mention those names, they're supported by other players which enhance their reputations.

They're a complete squad with good depth but like you mentioned, there's no household names in the team, which might be for the benefit of the program.

I give Brian Burke 100% respect and credit for making a team this strong out of what seemed to be a depleated field of players.

I went to bed after that sweet stone in the 5th end, safe in the knowledge that Ulsrud never lets me down.

Thanks for that Searl.

You're failing at rascism if you can't even see that the guy you are picking on is the same colour as everyone else on the ice.

On that subject, are there many african americans/canadians doing well in the NHL?

Ok lads, I'm leaving for Sälen, Sweden now to do some skiing of my own. Got a cabin up there we're going to so sadly I think I'm out of this thread for now.

Good luck in the rest of the Olympics guys. This has been a blast.

Someone shoot Elliot before he passes my postcount in this thread.

Anyone see Kowalczyks rant? She's saying that Bjørgens astma-medication, which is approved for usage if you can document a serious defect in your O2 intake (?), is drugs :wenger:

What is he taking? If he is taking fluticasone or something like it it is a form of steroid, so I can see why they might want to complain about it.

That said, you have to take it for a while before it has a noticeable effect unlike salbutamol which would give you instant benefits.

She :p

I don't know what kind of medication it is, but she's had it approved because her 02 intake (is this right? I just translated this directly from Norwegian. It sounds weird) is 20% reduced.

It's completely legit, quite a few cross country skiers are on some form of asthma medication and they've all been tested by independent lung specialists. The requirement is that you can't have a positive effect from said medication compared to a perfectly healthy person. This is nothing but sour grapes from that Polish bitch.

So what do we think about todays biathlon relay? I don't even know who's on the team other than Bjørndalen and Svendsen (Hanevold?), but I guess we're one of the favourites to win it.

wtf are they doing cross country skiing for if they are asthmatics? it's quite possibly the most difficult thing there is.

sounds more like sly doping to me.

I don't think we'll win the Biathlon relay today. Too wayward shooting form to win it methinks. Would be delighted if we did though and it's bound to be an exciting event. Oh, and it's our only medal hope today, tex-mex.

So it's completely natural for me to blow tonights Olympics for a hot night on the town?

Tread carefully now..

hehehe I don't mean to pick on Norway in particular. I'm of the opinion that very few Olympic athletes (summer or winter) are clean 100% of the time.

A huge amount of cross country skiers develop asthma because of the cold and dry air.

That's ridiculous. I lived in cold dry air for the better part of my life and only developed minor asthma after moving to a marginally warmer climate contracting a particularly strange illness, big city pollution and too many ciggies. It's gone now but I can tell you that some of those inhalants can give a healthy person quite a boost in a cardiovascular sense.
