Sharapova on today, around now I think. Hope she wins the womens again although it could well be someone like Justine Henin. Just read recently that they reckon that grass might not be used for much longer at Wimbledon as it takes the whole year to prepare the courts and some players don't like playing on grass.

justine henin just got shocked in the first round..sharapova and federer easily through

tim henman had a marathon battle before squeezing past the 1st round

Federer will walk it this year, too good. And my bet is on one of the Williams to take the womans.

How fit is Hewitt's new Missus!!!

Not bad. Shes been on a show over here for ages. She cant act for shit. Hewitt actually did a scene on the show. Fkin embarrassing

sania mirza did india proud today..
lost to kuznetztova in the third set, but put in a great effort.
Anyone saw it?? shes a big talent, just needs to work on a few things, especially the serve.. if that had been good she would have hammered the russian.

Great match. She was besting her in every way except when it came to the actual pressure situations although the tie-break in the second set was just fantastic tennis.

Kuznetsova had the advantage of the better serve and better legs to come up to the net..not much else.Mirza's soon going to in the top 10 I'd say.Commendable indeed.

Henman's lost. :smirk:

And I'm glad. ''Hen-mania'' pisses me off, I just feel sorry for this young jock who's gonna get all the pressure now.

All british hopes are now on young Murray's shoulders :smirk: .They are even renaming Henmans hill "Murrays Mountain" FFS. :wenger:

Murray just played a blinder.

6-4 6-4 6-4 straight sets against the man ranked 13th in the world

This from an 18 year old lad.

really made me proud.. I honestly didnt think she was this talented.. she obviously needs to work on her serve and movement, but on pure groundstrokes she can match the very best. And thats usually how you judge talent in the womens.. since the williams came, if you arent strong enough, your not good enough. But shes got it all. Needs to work on her serve though, alot.

What makes it a stand out performance is the fact she has no real competition in India...Great prospect.

No doubt a great result. But the way the media as hyped him up and some comparing him to the Tennis version of Rooney is way over the top.Wish they would give both players space to breathe and see how well they'll develop.

She's a good player, but Wimbledon might have been overwhelming due to the pace, especially since she doesn't have such a great service. If she works on her service and touches up on other parts of her game, she's certainly got the talent to make it into the top 50 if not the top 20 players. About time India produced a tennis player of note. There hasn't really been a single's player of much note since the 70s, I think. A billion people should really be able to produce a few tennis players. The same goes for China. About time.

One could say the same about Dementieva, tbh.

With regards to your point on strength in the women's game, I don't think it's true. The Williams' kind were unbeatable for a while, but then there came a time when there game became predictable and it became possible to circumvent their style of play using flair, although strength is necessary. But power hitting of that nature can be developed and added into the style of play as Justine Henin has done. At this stage, it's more important to have good fundamentals, rather than overwhelming power. And Sania Mirza has that, so there's hope.

Another player I really like watching is the 19th seed Ana Ivanovic. Personally, I'd love to see her or Dementieva win it, because they're interesting players to watch - especially Ivanovic who is a very creative player. Sharapova, though nice to watch is not really a favourite of mine for the needless sounds she makes and her style of tennis is very American - very predictable. Not denying that she has talent - she does have that, as well as strength, which makes her much more interesting to watch, compared to the Williams - but she doesn't make strokes like many European players.

The women's draw is open, really.

The media like to get excited. No Englishman (or British person, for that matter) has won Wimbledon since Fred Perry in 1936, so people in England are really hoping for someone to come along. Stirring up nationalist sentiments is a sure-fire way to sell newspapers.

Too bad about Henman. I don't think he'll ever win Wimbledon and that's tragic, because he had the talent to do so. He needed to use the crowd and play aggressively on many occasions but consistently failed. A tragic tale, without a doubt.

I forgot to add that she's beaten Kuznetsova before; I think that was on hard court.

Federer's by far the best grass courter around. Not as good as Sampras in his day, mind, but he is better on other surfaces than Sampras was. A better player than Agassi...can play from baseline as well as at the net. He is the best serve and volley player....the only real serve and volley player around..among the top contenders...unless you count Roddick who has a strong serve, but isn't strong at the net....he can be passed pretty easily as Daniel Italiano (forgot his surname) showed over the past two days.

Of course then some fans will set up a rival semi-professional tournament called AFC Wimbledon with matches played between such luminaries as the local butcher, the local butcher and a rapper from So Solid Crew!
