Will Keane

looked like the keeper pulled him down in the box at the very end of the match too. like berba on samba. so he's getting into good positions in font of goal. still so many talented players in front of him.

I'd love for him to come to the darkside like his twin (i.e, play for Ireland). One can dream I suppose.... He is an exciting talent

Has a lot of bulking up to do. Is he any quick?

Erm!!...The rumour is that his Michael is about to switch back and play for England!!

Bastard......hadnt heard that at all. Wouldnt surprise me though, the FAI is a joke with handling senior players, let alone the gimps in charge of the underage setup.

Keane is a good player but I just think things are stacked against him when it comes to making it here. He has a lot of other talented strikers ahead of him in the pecking order, plus Ravel Morrison who may end up playing behind a striker. We mustn't forget Josh King also, who has been told by Fergie that he will get a chance when the manager decides the time is right.

King is some bit off fitness surely though? Hardly played and injured since he went to Germany. I presume he'll be loaned out again when the chance arises?

Happened a few months ago. Both him and McGinty switched back to England.

MASSIVE difference.

I really like Keane, but Rossi was something very special at that age.

There's no MASSIVE difference between the two.

As he gets older? If he keeps on maintaining his current level, then he's probably got another five or six years ahead of him as a regular. I doubt Keane will still be willing to sit around and do absolutely nothing when he's approaching his mid 20s. He'll be desperate for some first team action.
He's 18, 5-6 years means he's looking at a starting role at 24? He's been with us from a young age and he'll be desperate to make it here. You need 4 top strikers, as we've seen Rooney's form is patchy and Hernandez needs creativity to get the best out of him (i.e. to spot his runs behind), Welbeck is yet to show he can consistently score at this level (although I have no doubts he will). 4 strikers, top ones at that allows you rotate and cover for injuries and loss of form, it's not a problem at all.

Confident?

fecking Rossi couldn't make it here, I certainly wouldn't be "certain" about Will.

Confidence doesn't equate to certainty, it means more likely than not. He's a very special player Keane and the situation is different, if anything Rossi not making it here would mean SAF will be more patient with Keane. Apparently a host of Championship clubs are after him on loan and he's already capped for the U-21's so it's harsh and wrong IMO for you to say Rossi was a far greater talent. Keane's a different type of forward anyway.

Well, Keane is 19 next week...

I wonder how many people posting in this thread have actually watched Keane playing for Academy or Reserves.

Those posts tell me that he's already an amazing young striker, but he's just a promising young lad who played against Blackburn because two strikers were injured, two others were already on the pitch and another one was on his way to London.

Fair enough. I watched last year's Youth Team with interest and 3 players always stood out to me, Keane, Morrison and Pogba. Keane is a really intelligent player, he's got a great first touch and he's a good finisher. He needs to work on his physique a bit but I always enjoy watching him. He's got a long way to go but so far the signs are good with him being involved with the First Team and being capped for the England U-21's. If I am being honest there are 6-7 players from last year's Youth Team that I have high hopes for but it's likely only 2-3 will make it. Keane's also got an excellent record for the Reserves and Youth Team. We also had 3 strikers on the pitch and Diouf was on the bench.

Hernandez was subbed off at half-time, so it was only Berbatov and Welbeck at the time, but yes - I didn't think Ferguson would choose Keane, I thought it would be Diouf, who has scored some goals for Reserves recently.

Keane is a good talent. Fantastic finisher.

Probably not ready for the first team. Can see him going on loan to the lower leagues next season. Would be a good age to get some experience.

Diouf was terrible against Crystal Palace.......he has no future at Old Trafford.

Keane was the right decision.

The Crystal Palace match was a month ago, Sean.

Diouf has been quite good for the Reserves since that game.

Diouf has been excellent for the Reserves since that game to be fair.
I know i've seen all reserve games this season.........but if reserve football is his level then "Thank you and good night".

The Carling Cup games were his opportunities and he hasn't impressed me in the games against Leeds, Aldershot & Crystal Palace.
His loan spell at Blackburn was bad too, a hat-trick in the Carling Cup against Norwich was everything i think.

Nope scored 3 in the League too, I don't think Diouf will make it here but considering he's in goalscoring form (remember Macheda and the Villa game) and he's more experienced you'd have thought he'd have first dibs on coming on to try and get us a goal.

I don't want to say anymore here (It's the "Will Keane thread") and maybe i'm too harsh on Diouf.........

But i feel he wouldn't be even good enough for a Championship club and will play in 2-3 years somewhere in Poland or Sweden.

Like Carroll, Djemba-Djemba, Manucho or Miller.

But I only said that he had been quite good for the Reserves recently, I'm not saying he'll make it at United, because he doesn't have future here and will be sold sooner or later. I just thought it would be him, not Keane, when we needed a goal to win the game.

;)

Exactly. Do you think he'll want to have to wait until he's approaching his mid 20s until he can get a starting place for us? If he's any good, or good enough to play for us, then he'll be desperate for first team action in two or three years. At that point, he won't see a lot of it.

Plus, there are other factors that could go against him as well. He's not the only young striker here looking to get more of a look in. Macheda is out on loan at the moment. If he impresses, I expect he'll be firmly ahead of Keane in the pecking order. Then, there's also the young Joshua King as well, who looks like a good prospect. To add to that, you've got a player like Morrison who could eventually be contending for a place in behind the striker.

I'm not saying that he won't make it here. In fact, I'd love for him to make a career at United, but you have to recognise that the odds are stacked against him.

Scored 4 goals I believe last night.

Any regular reserve watchers think he's ready to be our 4th/5th striker next season or should he be farmed out to the Championship?

A good loan move would be the best option.. But one where he gets games.
He has grown up a bit as well.. He should be comfortable in the Championship.

Apparently he's scored or assisted a goal every 70 minutes or so this season for the reserves. For me that's a clear sign that he needs match experience at a higher level. Haven't watched him much, but from what I've seen I think he should cope with the Championship just fine.

Get him out and let him play!

I think he is too good for the reserves, needs to be tested more. He played brilliant last night and his short partnership upfront with De Laet ( yes thats right!!) tore Newcastle to bits! De Laet even scored.

Well, I can't wait to see a replay of this reserve game! I can tell you that Will Keane has been scoring goals galore for at least 3 years now. I've been more interested in several other players when watching the reserves, but Keane's name just kept popping up, until you couldn't ignore him. He was so lanky, and he's still pretty skinny, I have to say I wasn't convinced at first he'd be the best striker out of his group and get to the point where he would get games for the first team, but I think we'll see him playing next season, getting a similar run of sub and CC appearances that Welbeck got before going on loan.

He looks like a throw back from the 50s, especially with that haircut. Just looks like a footballer.

He's got an lot going for him - no obvious weaknesses in his game. Very good technically, vision and awareness, strength and pace, composure and a deadly finisher.

With Welbeck and Macheda you wondered if they could get their act together. No doubt of that with Keane - he's going to be a quality striker for somebody. The question is - has he got enough for us?

Welbeck always looked quality to me, from 16/17 he looked like a United player of the future. Good technique, decent finisher, very good tactical understanding and vision/ team play. Macheda was a bit more questionable because of his lack of pace/workrate.

Plus Ferguson always talked Welbeck up as being a dead cert. It's impossible to second guess really, Petrucci has looked class but its Pogba getting the first team time. I was also convinced by Josh King a year or two ago but who knows.

I am not sure I would call Welbeck a decent finisher - his main problem has always been his finishing. He has always looked quality in everything he has done on the pitch - but previously he often looked lazy and he never scored enough goals. His work-rate is now much better - but he is still not a good goalscorer.
