I remember Fergie saying that Chelsea came in with a crazy offer for Hazard, which implied we bid well below.

He said that about Moura and PSG I think. Hazard it was between us and Chelsea and he was waiting to see if Chelsea won the Champions League.

/us and City refused to pay his agent £6m in fees, I believe.

Not worth a penny over £11.9m. Fergie needs to stop reading the papers and start scouting players.

Arsenal bought Oxlade-Chamberlain for the same amount and he was arguably just as raw.

I'd take him anywhere between 8mil to 12mil. Good young English talent, who can play in the CL and as we know United need wingers. With the current 3 wide players either injured or in really bad form.

Playing for Crystal Palace to playing against Real Madrid would be a bit of a big jump in quality...

Very good point.

I didn't really think this would happen - but it looks increasingly that it might very well happen. I know being linked with a player by the media is a terrible indicator, but something just feels as if this could very well happen and it would make sense.

It's been a while since we've had a young, English winger.

Daily Mirror and Daily Mail joining yesterday's Telegraph in claiming a 12m pound deal being done.

Nobody still sticking their head out and being definitive though.

I havent seen him play so to the people who have seen him, is he worth it? Does he have the potential to be one of the best in the country?

....
Fergie:

"There is a borderline in terms of what you would think is a good signing for United," he said.

"I see some values on*players, like Hazard for instance. To me it was a lot of money. He's a good player, but £34m?"

"What we're finding anyway, the climate for buying these top players - not just the transfer fees, the salaries, agents' fees - is just getting ridiculous now."

The United chief added: "In the Hazard deal, Chelsea paid the agent £6m. The (Samir) Nasri situation was the same. It's all about what you think is value for a player. I am not envious of those deals at all. We placed a value on Hazard which was well below what they were talking about. So if it doesn't work, well we're not worried about that."

Seems an incredibly pointless deal to be done at this time of the year. The only motivation I can see for it being done now is that we're worried that he may be persuaded by other clubs between now and the summer.

It seems like a lose lose for both clubs if the deal is completed now. We'd buy paying 12m for a player who would get almost no opportunities in the first team between now and the end of the season. Secondly players always do much better with a preseason behind them and I'd imagine he'd struggle to fit straight into the club before the end of the season. Which leads me to the only logical conclusion that we'd sign him and then loan him back to Palace until the end of the season.

Again though this brings up problems. Why would Palace want a player that is so vital to them to not really care if they get promoted or not, knowing already he has a move to the Premier League sorted. Secondly would they really want to play a player that they know would be leaving.

I'd imagine the only reason this could be going ahead now is that they need the money for some transfers so we're getting him at a cheaper price than we would be otherwise. If theres any truth to a deal being done and being done this January then im baffled.

First of all you can't possibly know that he wouldn't make any sort of impact in the first team in the second half of the season.

As for the bolded part, what makes you assume this would be a problem. The fact that he came through Crystal Palaces ranks might suggest he might actually want to see his current club do as well as possible.

We currently only have 4 wingers, one of which is 39. Nani has been injured and there is still uncertainty about his future, Valencia has been woeful most of the season, and Young has been in and out of injury and had very mixed form. I don't really think giving him playing time will be much of a problem. He is unlikely to start in the most important games obviously, but I still think with everything I said above he should get plenty of playing time if we were to bring him here in January.

Fergie saying no one is coming in the Jan window makes sense if we are buying him and loaning him back for the rest of the season....

He did say that you never know what comes up and this will be a case where the hand was forced by other clubs going in for him like with Nani, Jones etc..

Almost every paper reporting that a 8 million rising to 12 million deal for Zaha is close to being done.

We have apparently promised to loan some players too, if these reports are to be believed and they can keep him on loan till the summer.

See that sounds just about right to me, the only way in which the deal makes any sense. Fergie went into the season knowing the wingers he had at his disposal and was happy, I don't see why it would have drastically changed.

I think he's an exciting signing to have in the long run but I cant help but feel sitting on the bench for the next 6 months would massively stunt his development. Being at Palace will do him the world of good in terms of developing a winning mentality and learning to carry the team.

Cant wait to see Zaha link up with Clyne. Palace are our feeder club

You still think we'll sign Clyne? He's doing a great job at Southampton but can't help but think we've got a much better option is Rafael.

Yes Clyne who everyone was 100% convinced we'll sign last summer. Even had posts about Palace insiders saying it'll happen.

It didnt happen. So why you think Zaha, who was less impressive against us, and theres much less "evidence" to suggest he's signing for us, will be transfered I dont know.

Looks like this is happening..
I've only seen him play a couple of times.. one was against us.

Wasnt there a pretend ITK here that kept claiming that Clyne was a done deal?

Something like that. I was about ready to get a shirt with his name on it.

Once bitten though, I'm just going to assume this is nonsense until he turns up at old trafford or officially signed. I dont know why anyone would do anything else after the Clyne rubbish.

Having said that I do rate both players.

Who is saying it will definitely happen ?

Also, most players linked with us will not sign for us. That much is obv, but doesn't mean we can't discuss the possibility.

Btw, the strike rate of players linked so heavily is much better too.

What I understand about the Clyne transfer, I have reasonable links with people at Southampton, is that he had an offer to join Man Utd last year which was agreed upon by both sides. However the agent backtracked and asked for more money after they had agreed personal terms, the deal couldn't be signed until the summer anyway, and United reacted by telling him to do one and removed their offer.

Might not be the truth but its certainly what those I talk to seem to think happened.

He's signing for us pal, I told you the Clyne rumours were the work of his agent, Fergie wants Zaha though, it's going to happen.

The above opinions are those of football Journalist Alan Nixon.
