Why is Ruud van Nistelrooy so disrespected?

So it’s not disrespecting RVN. It’s applauding the genius of SAF, he had a great number 9 but realised how the team could improve without him. We basically did what Real Madrid now do, we sold a top quality player* when he was just at his peak and we improved by selling him.

Spot on!

(However* - the players we've had from RM have tended to be past their peak)

I posted that two years ago but I stand by it. While I loved Ruud, he was pretty much a poacher. One of the best ever at that but still. Our build-up and approach play nowadays is absolutely shocking, we barely create anything - hard to see an out and out finisher thrive on such inadequate service.

Sure, there's an argument to be made that part of the problem is the poor movement and lack of ability of our strikers. Which is true but I maintain that a peak Rooney would be more useful than a peak Van Nistelrooy for this team.
The last point is irrelevant. I completely agree, in fact a peak Rooney would improve every single club in world football. But the point still remains, Ruud was deadly clinical and we have been sorely missing that for years - it would drastically improve the team (yes, Rooney would more but no one said anything to the contrary).

He's not disrespected. Everyone recognises he was amazing at what he did. Just that he lacked the all-round game to bring the best out of those around him.

Saha wasn't as good a finisher but was more mobile, which created that bit more space for Rooney and Ronaldo.

RVN is still a United legend. No question.

What a curious thread.
He followed the likes of Cole who scored a lot, and absolutely smashed his record out of the park.

He wasn't "just" a finisher either. There was a reason we could play 1 up front a lot of the time, and he was it.

That's not why he was 'disrepected', it had nothing to do with his ability or lack of it in certain aspects, it was because of his reaction and attitude to not being selected - SAF wouldn't stand for that from anyone, RvN later acknowledged he was in the wrong and apologized

looks like a horse and is dutch. that’s enough.

I think he doesn't reach icon/legend status with United fans because his peak came in between two successful eras and the side he was in only really had one truly great season.

He was outstanding at times though and probably deserved another Premier League or a Champions success. If Fergie hadn't sold Stam in 01/02, there's every chance that we would have won one of them that season.

Ruud isn’t a legend?

Dont think he is disrespected. But he is not as revered as some might say its fair.

Other than the equine issue, he always came across as someone who defends his interests above all else.

Not saying its wrong, but it is what it is. So, a bit of though love. It cant hurt, just makes you stronger.

Is he so disrespected ? ….that’s a new one.

Just about everyone I know have rated him very highly.

Disrespected by who?? Nearly Any one who play with or against him gives him his plaudits. Only idiot fans discredit him because majority of his goals were in the box. (Don’t get extra points for quality of goals)
