He came in and while he was obviously a business expert(some may even say genius) it was clear from day 1 he clearly knew nothing about running the football side of the business.
The has been shown to be clear from that car crash of a first transfer window, to his managerial appointments, to the insane contracts he has been involved in.
He clearly needed help running that side of things, and whether its true or not the way it appears from the outside is that he didn't get it because he was too proud to admit he needed help or didn't want to give up power.

That's also on the Glazers not getting it though. From day one they've been focused on the commercial side, which is something they, and Woodward, do understand. It's mismanagement on a grand scale, not hiring where you, or your favourites, can't perform – in this case the football world. Appointing Woodward to Gill's position was just as bad as the attempted replacements for Fergie.
In December they will say he is not going anywhere

I think you have to take "leaks" like this after the event with some context. Woodward takes a large degree of responsibility because ultimately he was the main suit. Everything would have gone through him and to the Glazers so he can't escape culpability for renewals.
But there are a lot of people involved in our failures that have every reason to distance themselves from Ed now that he is gone in order to defend their own credibility.

He gets blamed for the superstars we signed but those responsible for the rest of the dross don't get anywhere near the blame he gets. The sporting structure is rotten.
So after Super League scam fiasco, he still had not enough... I guess Glazers need him and he needs the Glazers ? Motivation to protest against them will just get fueled further.

Yep and the amount of wages we paid for that project is ridiculous. We probably ended up selling Darmian for what we pay him a year after refusing to sell of 2 year whilst barely playing him.

That’s because he thought like a banker and viewed our players as assets rather than people/footballers.

The guy made life impossible for our managers. Especially Ole and Jose, who both talked about wanting clearouts.
In fact, United's 'disastrous' dressing room is largely down to the complacency created by Woodward making it so bloated and entitled. How can any manager get them motivated to give their all when the teammate next to them is allowed to get with murder before being given a pay rise and a contract extension?
It's no wonder they've downed tools and stopped trying. If my own colleagues worked like madmen, I'd feel obliged to follow suit. But if they spent all day pretending to work whilst really just talking about Netflix all day, I'd probably do the same.
Woodward and the accountants made the current culture inevitable.

We'll see how things pan out in these next few years and what that indicates about EW's time here. His bosses oversaw this are still here so can we say things have truly changed?
Perhaps they felt they owed Ed loyalty due to his part in the takeover but it seems that he was a big part of United's downfall since 2013.

You need a few oldies that can guide the younger ones, players at their peak who are here to win and prove themselves, Young players coming through that want to show they can reach the next level, and lastly some squad players who can come in and provide cover.
A large percentage of our squad is actually players who’ve failed at any of those roles, but they simply haven’t been moved on. Worse, Ole promised them all playing time, and it created a toxic atmosphere in the club.

This. Incompetent (at least on the football side which is errrr….what matters at a football club!) to the max. Turned us into a laughing stock under his stewardship.
Our policy towards contract renewals of players who should have been moved on, might well be the biggest underlying factor behind our decline as a club. And it’s on him.
For a man who had a background in banking it was quite incredible how stupid he was during his time here. Fair enough making some mistakes in the first couple years as you get to grips with the role and learn on the job, but you'd think he would have learnt from those mistakes at some point in 8 years. Only once have we made a profit on a player, the rest of the time we lose money or we're stuck with players leeching money whilst doing nothing as we price them out of the market. We struggle to sell anyone and we're left with a bloated squad full of dross. How did he not realise this and why did he continue to negotiate ridiculous contracts for average players? Even our best players are paid far too much. Thanks to him we can't easily sell Rashford as he's one of the best paid players in the league. Martial is paid more than Salah for crying out loud, so we'll probably struggle to get rid of him too unless we give him away for nothing.

But I think him being a vice instead of CEO probably meant our decisions was more committee based, unlike Arnold who will be a more powerful leader.

This guy was clearly way over his head on the footballing matters. But his financial aspect is also really questionable all these signings and contracts don´t paint a picture of a shrewd business man.
Out of his depth.. Oversaw the systematic break up of everything Ferguson/Gill had built over last 25 years. His Disney comments will haunt us for a long time - absolute bell-end.
He was a JP Morgan spiv who advised on the leveraged buyout on behalf of the Glaziers. Seriously did not even like football until the Floridians hired him, he was a rugger bugger at school.
He's left United weakened, our commercial advantage is now gone, the team is less than the sum of its parts. The stadium is absolutely average now, he did nothing to improve it.

Because he had one of the most important jobs in football and was horrific at it. His lack of self awareness that he was so far out of his depth led to years of mismanagement, leading us to where we are now, a decade of failure. It will take years until we see the effects of it gone.
