Why didn't we sign a right-winger?

We are the team who spends more on wages in the EPL. We can't just keep increasing our salary sheet every season to cover squad holes. We need to get rid of some deadwood first, which is not happening. We couldn't even get rid of Darmian, for crying out loud!

Mahrez, Moura they are the two that come to mind who would have instantly improved us and given us more balance. Add to that Sane who we should have gone for.

There was no viable target, perhaps aside from Riyad Mahrez, who Jose seemingly never wanted, and had likely agreed to go to City since January anyway.

Last thing I want is us buying some 6.5 out of 10 who is 23 years old and is the reason we don’t sign the 9 out of 10 we need next summer.

I’m convinced we would have gone for Gareth Bale if we could have, but after him, I didn’t see too many Manchester United right wingers on the market in the summer. Whoever we bought would have been criticised on here no end for not being good enough (and defended by many, simply because he now plays for us and is new, to be fair).

Everyone discussed this all summer, and from my recollection, beyond Mahrez, the caf struggled to put forward any realistic candidates themselves, despite insisting they wanted us to ‘buy a RW’. We had no overwhelming favourites. Nothing out there.

Sanchez was the right move in January, and him being shite has really, really cost us. It was an amazing coup and should have transformed our attack.

If we don't get the CL (which is a strong possibility) then we will struggle to get the World Class player we need. That's the big danger.

Our first choices wouldn't make City's bench. Even if the perfect player wasn't available, someone would be better who can then move in to second choice.

Why not Chong?

Eventually, hopefully. But he's not got the physique quite yet. I do hope to see him get a run out here and there this season. With Dalot he's tall and powerful and looks for a forward pass or a cross at the first opportunity, plus he's got a great delivery. Not sure about his taking a man on, but given our options, it's not a baked idea..

Why not Chong?

I saw him in preseason and the issue was that he was physically extremely weak.
It really was men against Chong, where he was being pushed off the ball like he was nothing. He wasn't even able to get a free kick for being knocked off the ball.
Some males, mature early (Mbappe, Martial, Rooney), while some take a little longer and I think Chong is someone who will get stronger, at a later age.

The club suddenly refused using simple solutions and descended into madness with playing wingers as fullbacks, changing Martial's positions and numbers like socks, pushing a highly creative attacking midfielder like Mata on the wing so he can run himself to death... all these outlandish ideas that prevent team from keeping happy and simple. If the players doesn't fully enjoy their roles on the pitch don't expect them to play good at all.

Don't be surprised this mandness ends here. We sold Rafael because he was Brazilian, sold Hernandez because he missed a penalty and sold Nani because of what... he was not good enough though he was still our best winger magician that we lack to this day ?

...and there's still people saying we don't need DoF to finally pour some common sense into this chaotic shitfest.

One problem if we get rid of the deadwood. The wages for the player sold go wpuld but every player coming in who thinks they are something special are going to want Sanchez type wages. I think that by giving him such a large contract will mess us up in the future when it comes to negotiating contracts with new players and one who are here and performing. I'd have no problem giving respectful rises to players already here whos performances prove they deserve decent wages but I think we made a horribly wrong fecision paying Sanchez so much.

I think this problem is quite common to all EPL clubs, who suddenly got a major cash injection from tv rights and it gives seller clubs and player's agents the power to try to get the max they can from english clubs, because they can afford to pay it.

Clubs with a good Director of Football and staff under his orders can thrive with a lot of money. We can't let the transfers decisions in the hands of the manager. No club does that nowadays.

Could've started this thread in 2014. Remember when we all used to joke that Fergie had a blind spot to buying CM's? This is now our blind spot.

Blindness

Been the biggest weakness in our team for 7 years

Zero planning but also no substantial discovery within the academy which is bit sad.

The scouting in this club was heavily crippled after SAF left.

We are still recovering from the Agent Moyes blanket sackings of coaches and scouts.

Feel like hitting my head against a brick wall thinking about us going another year without a right winger, we haven't had one for over 5 years. This club is truly fecked.

Another embarrassing transfer window . Time after time Woodward and co show the world they haven't a clue how to do transfers .
Our managers must be pulling their hair out over the years with these incompetent Muppets in charge

Haven't signed a first team right winger since Valencia in 2009, and he was a right back from 2014 onwards. Best part of a decade shunting #10s and centre forwards out there.

Another year of Lingard/ DJ/ Mata as backup to 19 y.o. Greenwood (who is a CF himself).

We are just plain stupid expecting De-Ed Wood & co to do the *right* thing.

Haha this thread is 2 years old and the question is asked still. Brilliant!

Did we ever play Di Maria there for a consistent period? I remember him playing AM,CM,ST,LW but not much memory of him playing RW.

You could probably have a set of positive threads and negative threads and just revive them based on the form of the team. Obviously you'd have to change the names of the "Manager X is great, stop doubting him!" and the "Manager Y is crap; sack him!" threads.

 Very true
