Why did we buy Fred?

People are being overly harsh, if there's no clear sign of improvement at this stage next summer then by all means get rid.

I think Fred would be a success if we play him next to someone like Ndombele or Barrella
Is it worth giving him a chance by buying a sold DM to replace Matic OR better ship him to Roma as they are really keen to get Fred on loan?

I still think he can deliver if we play him in 3 man midfield in advance position with 2 good b2b central midfielders

What do you think ?

I ask myself this often. He’s been here a year and I’m still not sure what his role in the first team is even meant to be.

He gives the ball away far too much to be trusted in some sort of Fernandinho capacity infront of the back four. He doesn’t score or create goals so I’m not sure he can play up next to Pogba. He can’t dictate the tempo either.

At best, he’s quite quick thinking and can perhaps help us transition on a counter attack. But at the expense of those other things in midfield? He’s a strange one.

Don't have the concentration to succeed in a high-intensity league like the EPL. His technique and passing is not consistent, his decisionmaking when to contain or tackle is not good etc. Think this transfer is a serious case of "stats scouting". He looked good on paper for Shakhtar, but not "IRL".

I think it is too early to get rid of him now. I would give him another season with new players around him in the middle. I still think he will come good.

We have bigger problems, and I doubt that there is a queue of clubs waiting to pay us big money for him anyway. There's no need to send him on a loan or sell him for peanuts, especially with Herrera gone — he's the closest replacement we have in terms of the skillset.

I hope he is goi g to come good this season. Had a few decent performances. I felt he never got a run of games and was always in an already struggling team. With the right midefied around him (Longstaff, Rabiot, Pogba?) I think he'll be able to impress.

No way should we look to move him on before the real dead wood.

I'd prefer to see Fred over Matic should a quality CDM not be bought. He seems to have good determination and moves pretty quickly and has a better pass than Matic.

So is he getting married or getting sold? I'm confused on what is going on with Fred, we paid a premium price and he should be one of the first names on the team sheet for that sort of money.

Another Mourinho and Woodward flop.

Far too soon to write him off. At the start of last season the Caf was pretty much unanimous that Lindelof was one of the worst signings in United's modern history. Twelve months later, he's our best centre back.

Some players take a season to get going. He’s one of them. He has to perform this year though.

But where is he? Why is he missing an important part of the pre-season?

I think this definitely makes him a squad player and will have to fight for his place, no matter if Fred's excuse is valid or not. This is the time to impress the manager, surely Ole will be looking at the other 4 midfielders first, plus even the youth players and potential CM additions.

What else can we expect from a club run so poorly? Surely this must have been discussed way beforehand, and inexplicably agreed. Doesn't look good on Fred either.

Think he deserves another crack. Give the benefit of the doubt last season by moving to new league and take time to adjust. Adjustment period over. No excuses this season, he has to play well or he can go next summer and preferably Matic as well.

I actually think he might be sold. Only him and Darmian are missing, it's too convenient.

If/ when we sell Fred, it’s going to be very likely to be our biggest hit ever on a transfer we have ever had - excluding pedants who might point to Ferdinand and Rooney (which clearly don’t count). Let’s be honest we would take a £30m hit on him. Can’t seek anyone paying more than £20m for him - and we would be lucky to get that.

It’s a weird situation, didn’t he miss the warm weather training camp also around February time? Either he’s got an awful judgement or he’s been badly advised but I can’t imagine Solskjær is too happy with this.

Does anybody know when he’s due back? surely this can’t take more than a day.

Unfortunately I agree. His transfer and the Sanchez one have been total disasters, hopefully we sort whatever the feck is going on and get at least one actual top class CM in.

It's been a few days already, he posted on instagram a video of him and his baby. The Brazilian didn't look worried at all, probably the Roma links might be actually serious and the club is trying to keep it on the low so we get more money than possible, hopefully.

All for giving him more of a chance but, personally,I'm just not seeing him becoming a effective PL player.
Sure he's got a silky pass on him but he wants too much time on the ball. He's not as quick thinking as Silva nor nimble footed, for example. If anything he looks completely lost when he does receive the ball.

How do we give him a chance when he regularly misses important periods of squad bonding and training?

It seems that way doesn’t it.

That’s a shame as I really did think he’s a lot better than he’s shown so far. Perhaps he Darmian and Lukaku are the ones he’s told can go.

It would explain why were linked to several midfielders like Savic, Fernandes, mario Lamina etc

Is he still at a ‘family wedding’. I just think he wasn’t up to fitness and got left behind. Like Ole said would happen to players that wasn’t of standard.

Why do we continue to buy South American footballers at all? We seemed to be cursed.

We've had likes of Veron, Forlan, Kleberson, Tevez, Heinze, Anderson, Valencia, Di Maria, Falcao, Sanchez, Fred, Rafael, Fabio......

And Rafael n Valencia have arguably been the best of the bunch. Might not have been the most talented but ones that worked out. Tevez n Heinze I would have gone with but for both doing the dirty on us or in Heinze's case trying to.

Don't want anymore personally. There's something about the culture of the club they clearly don't buy into. There must be a valid reason as some of the players we've signed are good players in their own right.

Lets face it, he actually looked scared and out of his depth half the time last season, he really cant be that bad again this season. I think he is a much better player than he has showed....but I also think the much better player is still not a good enough one for us to make great strides forward

Was Mourinho just targeting him and Sanchez as they were both high on the list of targets for man city and he just wanted to disrupt their transfer priorities in a bid to gain ground in them?

ALthough I liked Rafael, he seems to be very fondly remembered during his time here as a player and I cant work out why. He had the one season, was it Fergusons las or MOyes first, where he really improved and was pretty good, apart from that he was naive and over assertive defensively.

I do like Valencia, actually think bar the last season he was pretty good as a right back for us and ok on the wing. Decent player, loyal servant, should be well remembered and recieved in my opinion too.

As for the rest, doing the dirty or not, I think both Heinze and Tevez were both superb in the short time they were with us and playing devils advocate would you expect an English player to be loyal if they moved to Santos for example? Veron started off well, he was a luxury player we didnt need but I liked him even though he flopped in the end. I also liked ANderson, though he never progressed from a good start, he was part of one of our great sides after all and he did love the club.
I think DiMaria looked good for us too at first when played in midfield, the he got injured, got the burglary, came back played out wide which was an utter waste and quite obviously never settled with the culture so fair enough to name him.

Sanchez and Forlan certainly can be labelled in your argument, two very very good players that have been awful for us.

I would say SOuth American wise certainly with Brazilians, its not so much a case of them floping, more we havent actually signed a good one yet. Could almost say that for the whole league, mainl the better ones signed have been unBrazilian workman like players, such as the Arsenal midfielders. I liked Juninho and I do rate Jesus too, but there hasnt been a bona fide world class flamboyant Brazilian in our league to my memory anyway.....just RObinho the show pony
