Why are average players being bought for huge money this summer?

If you lined up the last 25 people you’ve shaken hands with, you wouldn’t remember all of them

Anyway you are missing the point of the thread like many others. It isn’t about that fake Arsenal players. There are plenty more examples of nothing players moving for huge money this summer

I would remember the last 25 people I shook hands with who scored against United

Yeah that's the thing - what are these players actually showing to be worth this much? Carvalho was bought by Liverpool for £5m and has literally done nothing in the last 2 years for his value to increase by 500%.
It’s absolutely ridiculous. Meanwhile we struggle to sell much better and much more well known players for way less.

It's the way nobody wants to pay more than £20m for McTominay in the same window. Like, I know he's limited but he has admittedly somehow been a mainstay in our midfield since the amazinf McFred days. Nearly 5/6 years!

Nketiah is an £8m max player. Clubs should stay away from him until Arsenal get desperate to sell, which they will. Its absurd.

It's like that since Neymar to PSG.So nothing new.

Howsit bud! Yeah agree re those two player - Nketiah being an odd example to bring up. You're right about van den Berg though - never heard of him and I think definitely an inflated fee/risky signing. Has he even had any minutes for your first team in the PL?

I guess the confusion for United fans is that we can barely get more then 5m for an Uruguayan international , nor the 25m we want for McTominay. But I guess there are a few other factors to take into account which I won't try and go into now.
People are a sucker for ‘potential’. If you’ve not failed to impress because you’ve not played, the ‘potential’ is still there unlike if you’ve not impressed while getting little minutes on loan.

It’s why Pellestri is going for so little, people think that’s the best he’s going to be.

Isn't Nketiah supposed to be that "mysterious masked rapper" from the premier league that no one knows the identity of?

Perhaps that's why some haven't heard of him before.

Yeah its not a conspiracy.
Also it's impossible to be good at selling if every player you are trying to sell would be the highest earner at a potential buyers club.

Main feck ups I think we've had in terms of sales were Lingard (stupid to hold on post West Ham loan), McTominay the past two summers (obviously he turned down Fulham recently which is tough), and Elanga (he should have probably fetched 10m more than he did).

The oil clubs skewed the fees and we were stupid enough to pay those higher fees for average players. Now it seems we have somewhat learned our lesson.
Yoro seems to be the exception, but his talent is evident so the high fee can be justified.

Nottingham Forest sold 3rd choice goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos to Newcastle for £20m. He made 5 PL appearances

What do you mean by THIS summer ? This happens every summer

It’s a bunch of English words put together but they make no sense in that order
Makes perfect sense. He said that people are happily showing that they don't know much about football when they judge a player based on the fact they have never heard of them.

Is that meant to be an insult, or..?

For some odd reason I do vividly remember Liverpool signing Van Der Berg as a 17 year old, thought it was probably a sign that he'd played 20+ games in the Eredivisie at that age and was a 6'4" Dutchman that they were getting a Van Dijk regen.

Turns out 5 years later and he's never played for them.

It's probably because of his age (27, will be 28 in a few months) and contract situation.

Liverpool and Arsenal fans and former players spend all day, every day raving about their players. They’re all over the internet and in the press telling you how Quansah and Gomez are better than Yoro and Branthwaite, or how Curtis Jones is twice the player of Mainoo. There is a perception of their squad players that lends itself to generating decent money in sales, in much the same way the Portuguese press generates hype over their talent.

United fans and former players spend all day every day slating our non-star players. The criticism of guys like Maguire, McTominay, Lindelof, Pellistri and others is massively exaggerated and often wildly inaccurate.

There were guys sat in the row in front of me on Friday night who threw their scarves away towards the pitch in disgust when McTominay came on. Maguire was a running national joke to the extent it felt like bullying, and as much of it was from our fans and former pros as it was rivals.

Then we wonder why we can’t sell players for decent fees, when the perception of 90% of our players is that they’re muck.

Nketiah made a couple of England squads last year and actually got some game time as a sub so is actually an England international. I know this as I remember thinking 'how the feck is this guy anywhere near the England set up'.

Football inflation is higher. I just looked at our revenue has doubled in the last 10 years. So buying Mata for £37m under Moyes is the same relative cost as £75m today.

There's also I guess a weird situation for some of the lower league teams that they need to sign somewhat known players. You don't really want to end up fighting relegation because you signed Antony's cousin from the Dutch league on half the price.

Why do you think any of that makes a difference?

Wiki says van den Berg hasn't played a single game for Liverpool, ever. Did nothing for his first season and loans for 4 years after that.

61 appearances for Preston from 2020-2022.
9 appearances for Schalke 2022-2023.
1 appearance for Schalke II 2023.
33 appearances for Mainz last season.

How the feck is that CV worth £25-30 million?

Oxlade-chamberlain went to Liverpool for 35 million nearly ten years ago I think. I'm not sure it's a totally recent thing for players who aren't that great to go for huge amounts of money. Perhaps it just seems more crazy nowadays.

It must be nice to live in a world where selling average youth players for £20m is an option. As United fans, we’re happy when we get £500k and a sell-on clause.
McTominay has been linked with moves for more than that and him and Nketiah have both played over a hundred games so Nketiahs fee makes perfect sense.

I don't know much about the second guy though and that one does seem a little strange.

Soon we will be able to sell avg players for good money once we clear out the current crop of overpaid useless players.

Thanks Murtough, Woodward and Judge.
