Who will be our marquee signing this summer? (If at all)

What big names are available ? Schweinsteiger might be...

Think we need a poll.........

Players become available when you bid lots of money for them.

For a club our size, most players are available if the club is willing to spend the money.

And for the ticket prices we charge, and the poor football on offer the last two seasons, the club really must be targeting players that will bring something special to us.

Hope it's Verratti and Bale.

I hope we compete for Pogba but if we are going to spend £50m on a player, I hope Verratti is at the top of that list.

I am praying it will be Marco Verratti.

To all those saying Verratti... PSG isn't in need of money and the only way we could see him coming is by giving them someone they want (Di Maria)...

So hypothetically, would you take a swap Verratti for Di Maria... We do have good wingers (with Depay added) and a brilliant CM might help...

It'd be some signing to beat what we've already paid for Depay?

Oh yeah I forgot we payed £86m for him, cheers BBC.

Really though, the prices quoted for Otamendi seem to be around the £30m mark

Our only natural right-wingers would be Nani and Valencia, so I'm not sure if that puts us in a favourable position. Not a fan of Mata in that right-attacking pocket, so if we're bringing in a new right-winger too then yeah, I'd be up for it.

Not letting Di Maria leave with the expectation that he does not have to alter his approach as drastic as he did towards the end of last season. Else most likely paying over the odds for Harry Kane, but I believe he will be worth it as he is amongst a group of world class players who accomplished something outanding at his age.

Why don't we just go out and pay whatever needed for someone like Verratti, Pogba or De Bruyne? Players who will instantly raise our game. I have a disgusting gut feeling that we won't do it this summer. I have no idea why I have that feeling. Real Madrid will do it. Barca will do it even with their fecking ban. If we're going to close in on them, we must do this more often than not.

McCarthy, Benteke and Firmino will raise our game.

:wenger: We'll surely be a serious contender for the 3rd spot with those signings!!!

Firmino is good. Benteke is not anywhere near United quality. Look at his numbers if you disagree. McCarthy only as a last resort if we're unable to get Schweinsteiger or some other good deep-lying playmaker.

McCarthy, Benteke and Firmino are what I would file under talented footballers who are awaiting a big explosion in their development and the right club could light that fire to these explosive bundles of talent.

I agree though that we might need to add Stonesy as our Marquee CB signing and maybe a destroyer in Naingolan. Would be the perfect summer.

You have a grand lack of ambition. Benteke is almost 25 and he has had a goal average of less than 0.5 over the past two seasons. He can be a good player from time to time, but his inconsistency makes him nothing better than a good striker for a team like Liverpool. You must have a very creative mind and a lot of optimism if you're awaiting a big explosion in Bentekes development. The two others could be decent signings, especially Firmino. I'm not so sure about McCarthy. I just don't see him winning something like the Champions League ever.

Why would Pogba consider United after what happened & with Barcelona & Real Madrid showing interest? Even Juve are a more attractive proposition, football wise. Verratti has also written off a move to us. Is De Bruyne really that much better than targets that we have a decent chance at getting? We're just not that attractive a proposition to the very top players - 4th in the Prem, with three teams above us that will be very hard to draw in. They will improve their squads this summer as will we but I'd be surprised if we manage anything better than 3rd. As for the Champions league - last eight if we have a run of luck.

Benteke, Firmino, McCarthy, Naingolan, Stones and Cilessen would make anyone's mouth on here water in delight. You are lying through your teeth if that list would not make you a very happy man at the end of the summer

Edit: I admit that maybe a prime RB is missing on that muppet list. Van der Wiel could be that man.

Are you joking? Van der Wiel is not better than McNair. We have five players who would do a better job at right back than Van der Wiel. Please withdraw Benteke from your list unless you're going to explain why you think he would improve our team. He is not better than Rooney or Van Persie, and I'd rather we give Wilson a chance than signing Benteke. Cillessen is not better than Valdes. Stones is not better than Jones/Rojo/Smalling. Nainggolan is not better than Carrick nor Herrera (although I'd like to see us signing him). McCarthy is not better than Carrick.

You're listing a bunch of players who'd add some depth to the squad, but not improve our first XI. Calling that list a muppet list is a disgrace. I'm not lying through my teeth, if we do not buy a single player who'll improve our starting XI, I'll be a very sad man.

Wow. Have you forgotten how we can pay pretty much higher wages than every single other club in the world at the moment? Or the fact that we are one of, if not the biggest club in the world. I don't think Pogba is mad at United. He's probably a bit disappointed in Fergie, but I'm sure he'd be willing to make a transfer from Juve back to us as long as we give him a shitload in wages.

And yeah, I think De Bruyne is a lot better than Firmino for instance.

Wages aren't everything - ask DDG. Compare living here to Spain. Compare playing with the best players, to playing here. If he was in the slightest interested in coming to us, he'd have made it known.

This is the kind of fan comment/delusion that should be reserved for bluemoon.

Christ, DDG is a special incidence. His mother doesn't like flying, his girlfriend lives in Madrid, so does all of his friends and the rest of his family. And Real Madrid will probably win more trophies than us in the next 5 years so it's very easy to understand why he wants to go there.

You're right, wages aren't everything, but we're a bigger club than Juve. We have a greater chance of winning the CL in the next years than them, and we'll most likely reach the top winning a couple of PL trophies sooner rather than later. Every foreign Juve player would want to join us.

To say that he'd have made it known if he was slightly interested in joining us is just bizarre. How often do you see players making it known that they want a transfer? It never happens.

Pentame meet Kevin.

in a heartbeat

With De Gea leaving, I assume the club will want to appease the fans with someone well known. Possibly two in the mould of a striker and midfielder.

Well Depay is already one marquee signing. Reports saying Firmino is moving to a club in england which could likely be United as they look to show interest in him. Otamendi could another, unsure about that one as Valencia wont sell less than 50 euros and apparently no bid has been placed yet, but i can see them placing a bid soon, considering he is exactly what united needs to strengthen and stable that backline. There the obvious ones, really need a striker so could see surprise signings here and there espeically a striker. Benzema? Kane?(hope not) who knows, they looked to be in no rush to sign i guess and probably LVG is having a break from football because the dude went from world cup to preimer league with no vacation time, so dont think we'll see any signings until july time but need to get it sorted before pre-season.

Wow, er, admire your optimism, tinged with pessimism.

We should just put the Bale money in front of Barca and ask for Neymar

Don't think DDG is a special incidence at all.

I can't think of one player we have bought / kept when Real or Barcelona have been interested.

Oh yeah, except for Kagawa and Bebe :nervous:

don't forget Valencia, he turned down Madrid for us ;)

I feel that the media never talks about players that reject Real or Barca. I'm sure there's a lot, they just never get talked about.

A million times yes. I would even give Di Maria a piggyback ride through the Eurotunnel if it meant getting the deal done.

Have a feeling we'll put in a big money offer for Kane, our interest is reported by too many sources. He does seem to be the typical LVG striker. Don't care much for marquee signings anymore, last season proved we need the right players not necessarily big money signings.

Ideally we get; Schweinsteiger,Schneiderlin, Benzema, Firminho, Clyne(or a solid alternative) and Otamendi.

Don't think we'll get the likes of Pogba, Verratti, Bale. Even Benzema would surprise me but one can hope.

Mate, before Messi and Ronaldo started having 70 goal seasons, 1 in 2 was considered the standard ratio for a very good striker. To maintain 1 in 2 over 100 games in the Prem, most of which with Paul fecking Lambert as his manager, is seriously impressive.

Consistency's an issue for sure, but I rate him highly.
