Who will be our marquee signing this summer? (If at all)

Donaldo Guerca or Romeu Nivaldha.

dont care about marquee signing if we'll get 3 or 4 new good players which will make us better.

Yup, to be fair, is there a marquee signing realistically available this summer?

If we keep DDG I'd count that as one

Looks like we'll heavily overpay for kane, depressing but reflects our place in the football scene, which hopefully LVG can change in his last two years

Not bothered if the signings are marquee, I just want the best players possible to fit our system though.

However if we just stand there whilst Man City sign guys like De Bruyne and Pogba then I guess I would be very pissed off!!

Memphis is the marquee signing for us this summer.

Yes. I imagine the other signings will be functional players bought for balance purposes. Indeed, I suspect a number of the top teams will be doing likewise. I expect Sterling to City will be the big move this summer in the PL.

I dont know. The noises coming from the club and woody sound like we do want a marquee signing. All of this "we can do things in the transfer market other clubs can dream of" and all of this rubbish to me indicate we will be spending huge sums of money on players.

Its clear we want a Bale/Ronaldo type signing, if any top player in the world becomes available then we will go for him. It sounds like it will be at least another season til either of those 2 leave, sane goes for Pogba possibly and maybe even Benzema who would be a huge signing for any club.

I personally don't think we will pull off a marquee signing, i think we will sign a back up to Valdes, Clyne, Otamendi and Gundogan. Then the summer after s striker and a winger. We need a striker now though but not sure whose good enough thats available.

Bebe?

Seriously........Firmino, Gundogan or Kane would do

None of those are marquee signings IMO. Marquee for me means Sanchez to Arsenal, Di Maria to United, Neymar / Suarez to Barca, Ronaldo / Bale to Madrid, etc

In terms of marquee signings for United this summer I think it's Bale or no one. Probably the latter to be honest, but that doesn't mean we can't make some very good signings that improve our team immeasurably.

I hope we compete for Pogba but if we are going to spend £50m on a player, I hope Verratti is at the top of that list.

Bale.

Madrid don't sell early, they buy early and sell late due to their weird politics. Once they have a couple of big signings the fans won't care about bale-not that they would anyway.

It will take time but I'm certain bale will be a utd player by September

Thats a not marquee signing. Too cheap, unlikely to make immediate impact and unlikely to be picked ahead of A.Young...etc etc.
Di Maria, Falcao - these were our marquee signings last Summer and were expected to win us games, by individual brilliance.

Personally, i think we will make 1 marquee signing and it'll be Kane.

How certain?

I'd rather we have no marquee signings if it means we get the players we need for van Gaal to be able to fully implement his system and improve our weakest areas. Getting a good number 6, RB and CB would trump any marquee signing.

Schneiderlin/Otamendi/Naingollan will be as close as we get, & they're not "top end" (yet) enough to be considered marquee. But I'd be happy with those.

Would Schweinsteiger still be considered "marquee" at a £10-15m price? Doubt it considering his age etc too but he's possibly the most realistic "big name" we can get.

There aren't many of them available tbh. Neither Barca/Madrid are getting rid of anyone it seems. Ditto Bayern.

Woodys best hope would be Pogba/Vidal. But it doesn't sound like we're interested. Not many strikers available in that category either. Cavani? But at those prices, no thanks.

Hate the term 'marquee signing' just a made up bullshit phrase by the media to entice you in. Hope we sign in area's needed & I like the idea of Clyne, Hummels, Schneiderlin OR Kondogbia, Gundogan OR Schweinsteiger, Higuain OR Kane. Its about what we need, marquee my arse....

What's a marquee signing exactly? If Bale was considered as a marquee signing for Real than using the same line of reasoning than so should Kane for us. They are/were both Spurs player of the year, they both cost a bomb and considering they played at Spurs than its evident that they has won nothing relevant. Depay was a goal machine in Holland however he's not considered as a marquee signing because 'he scored them at a third rated league'. However Neymar was considered a marquee signing despite the boy had never stepped out of Brazil whose league is hardly known for being great. So really, this marquee signing is only hype.

Take Kagawa as an example, SAF and the club was able to portray the boy as a world beater and a coup for the club when seriously it wasn't the case.

After all by that time they were both important players for Spurs, they both would cost a bomb and they both won jack shit at their former club. What about Neymar? What has Neymar done to deserve to be considered a marquee signing? At that time he was only scoring goals for fun in some third rated league. So really, a marquee signing is open to interpretation
Yes, it's intangible. But Bale is not the same as Kane. Bale was a world record fee - Kane is not worth anywhere near that.

And once again we're going into a grey area. Is Bale talented enough to be considered a world record fee? Should Kane be worth 50m? (we're talking around 3 times more than Firmino)

What other Mendes clients can we sign who we haven't already signed?

I would rather have Memphis, Gundogun, Schniederlin, Otamendi and a rb signed than anothe di maria type signing. Not that i'm not pleased to have bought him last year!

To be honest though i think memphis depay is a marquee signing. Hes one of the top young talents in Europe, was wanted by PSG and is far better than Sterling but hes cheaper because he isn't English. Sterling will be considered a major signing for whoever gets him because of his nationality.

Yeah.

Like ADM and Falcao for instance, right?

Better to buy few players in positions we need then one marquee signing just for the sake of it.
Of course if we can get both thats great but..
There's no but this time. If there's some football giant available like Vidal or Bale we're getting him as a part of a summer plan. We've been preparing that kind of maneuver from Moyes era however the four signings you've mentioned can still make bigger impact if it will raise overall quality. That's part of the plan, too.

I've always wondered why strikers with such shit scoring records get so many clubs

I also don't think they'll be a big name signing, a couple of depay level players(very good improvements to the first time but not a huge name) which I'l be happy with as last season proved its not about the name but how they fit the squad.

I think whichever centre half we sign will be our most expensive signing and rightly so

Hmm, would De Gea count? :smirk:

The ones that wouldn't surprise me would be one of Schweinsteiger, Benzema, Hummels or Gundogan. I can also see a big signing like Lloris or Cech coming in, regardless of the marquee signing (for obvious reasons, especially if we are talking about goalkeepers). My personal dream signing would be one of Hummels, Bale or Reus (the latter being the least likely, I feel).

Don't understand your reasoning at all.

All the noises coming out, are that Benitez will if anything build the team round Bale.
