Who replaces Ten Hag?

I agree. He could've hoarded all of the players he's sold or got rid of just to be around just in case. But he's a actually thinned the squad in a way of delaying gratification so he could fill it up again when the new owners came.

He would have explained this to INEOS by now too and I don't think they will be against atleast giving him til the end of the season. If between now and then he has his first choice 11 around again and we win most games with them, then I can see INEOS extending his contract.

They want the best man for the job and won't be able to criticise him for the discipline he's trying to instill into this squad. Ten Hag needs his first choice 11 of Onana Dalot Varane Martinez Shaw Mainoo Casemiro Fernandes Garnacho Hojlund Rashford.

And he needs it as often as possible to have a genuine audition. Up until this week he was passing it. Even without Martinez and a fully fit Shaw.

Hard disagree. He had them for 3 games straight and it was only luck we won those games. There's zero control. We haven't been convincing for a full 90 minutes for exactly a year now.

I agree with the bolded sentences. Totally.

But let’s just pretend last season didn’t happen. This season has been totally in keeping with the final Ole/Rangnick season. That’s why I banged on about ten Hag over achieving last year so much previously. Its not that we shouldn’t be winning trophies and finishing minimum top 4, of course we should be challenging for PL/CL titles but the fact is this club is in such a state top to bottom that that just isn’t realistic.
Its not about low standards to say we are rubbish, obviously we all aspire to win the biggest titles but we aren’t there and we are even behind (developmentally speaking) clubs like Brighton, Villa and Spurs. We need some realism.
To quote a wise man, “we need to walk to the correct solutions, not run to the wrong solutions”. Sacking Erik feels like running to the wrong solution.

Over the last 4 seasons we've finished 3rd, 2nd, 6th and 3rd again. Lets not pretend Ten Hag performed mircales last season.

I don't disagree with that point. But when you have barely 11 players and people you can count on out of a 25 man squad it's going to be very tough. I think he should get the summer window. If he has around 17 players he can work with who are good enough to start for the club then we can expect more from him and the team.

Hopefully the new structure assist in signing players that are going to increase our ceiling in terms of performances and expectations. We have to get recruitment right regardless of who the manager is so I don't see why we shouldn't lean on the side of giving a manager more time than not.

I don't know if ETH should stay or go, but we need a clear identity and blueprint at the club that all the footballing side sing from, from the academy up to the senior players. Transition football isn't what we need to win titles.

Watched this earlier. This is exactly what’s been happening ALL season. It’s complete madness. What in the name of god is he thinking setting us up like this??
One midfielder deep in the buildup and everyone else hiding in the striker/10 position?!

For that reason alone I’d be happier to see De Zerbi takeover because he emphasizes methodical buildup from the back and through midfield.

Nobody says he should pick the players himself, but he isn’t going to give up his veto if he knows what’s good for him.
With specific regard to ETH, the club failed him. He wanted a striker and the club floundered so he pushed last minute for Antony. He wanted FDJ but the club made a mess of it and he ended up with Casemiro (an excellent player but hardly like for like with Frenkie)

I think it is all excuses for ETH, Casemiro is a multiple Champion League and La Liga winner. Forget about the fee for Antony, let's say we sign him for half the fee. Antony is still going to be a left footed player with no pace. Whatever it is, his job is to make it work but he hasn't. No matter who we sign, we can't defend nor attack with ETH.

We had been trying for Antony for weeks before we caved in and paid up. He also insisted that FdJ wanted to come according to journalists. That first window was on him. There's even stories that our recruitment team doubted some of the players he was trying to sign.

And what exactly is the point here? Bring him back? Let's not be silly. I love Ole, but the football was shite, especially at the end and most of his success was during covid with empty stadiums. I get the ETH frustrations, but this is nonsense.

It's stupidity. Our fans will never learn, we deserve what we're getting really.

Ole was getting battered by practically everyone by the end. Was it Watford that beat us 4-1 in his last game? And people want him back?

I trust the new INEOS team to get the right guy in for the job. May be a surprise option but I am open to see how a competent structure gets the right person in to succeed.

Certainly needs to have a personality which is a real problem with Erik

You have got to command the respect of the players to succeed at this club and it's impossible to do it when you have the charisma of a sponge.

We need someone who can walk in like they belong here and immediately make an impact with the players, the fans and the media

That sums up what we need perfectly,so who would be on your shortlist who fits those criteria. I noticed O Neil's name in this thread but worry he isn't capable of such a huge step up

What's his football style
Possession based, patient build up from the back then vertical football style with fast transition through the midfield, he also was the youngest manager to ever manage a CL SF with Red Bull Leipzig, qualified every year for CL with 3 different German teams has 59.5% win rate in CL average points 1.95 in CL per game, had a 71.4% win rate at Bayern and the year he won the bundersliga his team scored 97 goals from 34 gamesand last season before Tuchel came in March 23, he had similar numbers of 2.75-2.85 goals per game.

He’s tactically cute, likes a compact patient build up unlike ETH crazy basket ball tactics where we literally go 2-1-7 when we have the ball and wonder why we concede so many goals on the counter. He likes playing with a high line, fans may remember when Rashford destroyed his Red Bull Leipzig at Old Trafford he played a 4321 at old Trafford but in the home leg he switched to a 3421 formation and won 3-2.

His big advantage over ETH is he’s more flexible, not as stubborn and learns quickly from his mistakes, his weaknesses he falls out with players just like ETH as he’s very demanding, plus he’s not been great for Germany so far but now I’ve said that he’ll probably win the Euros.

Even the season before when we finished 2nd, it was a LOT of individual bailouts if I remember correctly (Pogba, Cavani, and Greenwood in particular were crucial the 2nd half of the season). We had 0 idea how to play through a high press either. Ole could certainly coach some brilliant counter attacking patterns, but most everything else we did under his reign was extremely off the cuff both in defense and in the final third.

im starting to lose my patience with ETH, but still would like to see how he does with a proper structure.

i dont want Tuchel.

I am confused by those who say no to Potter because "he was simply propped up by the structure at Brighton." If we are bringing in the main person who was responsible for that structure in Ashworth, wouldn't that mean Potter has a good chance of success here?

i typically do not want a manager that plays 3 at the back.

So what is it that puts you off Tuchel, the guy won Champions League with Chelsea. I am saying no to Potter as we saw he couldn't handle managing egos at a big club. Nothing to do with the structure in place at Brighton.

God I hope we stay away from Tuchel. I don't think SJR will be stupid enough to go that way.

My 5 man initial shortlist would be:

Amorim
Di Zerbi
Nagelsmann
Gary O Neil
Lopetuegui

Graham Potter and Tuchel being so high in the running gives me nightmares.

We should try for Xavi Alonso too.

Sounds like the only real negative is that he falls out with players. Any chance it could be like when Guardiola does and it makes them hungry to prove him wrong.

Most of his success was in his temporary managerial role, which was December 2018 to March 2019, before COVID. Things started to go wrong when he became permanent manager.
Some of the football we played in that first period was like a breath of fresh air, so pleas don't say it was s***e. The following season was when we finished third, and reached two semi finals, mostly due to the signing of Fernandes in January, performances were much better after his arrival.
The powers that be had, in my opinion, not really looked for a new manager for the club, were quite happy with Ole, probably because they weren't paying him top dollars, and I believe that the resigning of Ronaldo was a club decision that Ole possibly didn't want.
Ole's tenure should have been short and sweet, but far better managers than him have failed to provide a championship winning team.
But no, Ole should not return to manage United.

Hes failed at his last 3 clubs that should tell you something

Actually the club culturally needs to not have players being able to go and speak to people like Murtough and go above the manager when they don’t like something.

The club, sporting director and manager all have to be on the same page. Its not about personality its about having the correct leadership structure at the club. When players have too much power (as is the case at United) see Rashford vs Rangnick and Lingard vs Rangnick then you will have problems no matter if the manager has personality

He did given the amount of players who left that summer and having no striker. As usual though it only takes a bad season for people to start trying to rewrite your entire history as a manager

He didn't perform any "miracles"

No to Lopetegui.

You should be adding Inzaghi to the list

I saw this earlier as well. I think it needs a separate thread. I need someone to make it make sense. EtH and McClaren are not idiots and have a years of experience including winning cups/leagues. And yet this is how we set up and play. Makes no sense.

We’re attempting a press but not bringing the back line up (either because they’re scared or ETH instruction) because of a lack of pace. Also we think press is just lateral and we only squeeze one way… City completely different at it

But surely ETH and the coaches see this? It's basic football. You wouldn't see this at youth level. The coaches would be screaming at the defence to push up or screaming at the attack to drop back. It's mind boggling. Literally. If you would want to sabotage a team then you could not do any better. And it's not just the space between defence and attack. It's the gaps between the midfielders. It's the positioning of all players. Its the workrare. All the basic fundamentals. Its all over the place. How? Why?

What's Ruben Amorim style? I haven't watched Sporting. Is he another defensive coach?

This has been apparent from the very first game against Wolves. The fact that we’ve collected 44 points despite glaring tactical weaknesses is a testament to squad quality and individual brilliance of the players.
