Film Who is your favourite movie director?

Christopher Nolan / Denis Villeneuve

Biased mainly due to cinematography, but I adhere to Nolan's preference of 15/70mm IMAX to get out of typical digital viewing while adopting practical VFX.

Both use great shots in scenes to emphasize scale and understanding sonics for apprehension. Denis's ability to frame multiple viewpoints in a scene is also second to none a key reason why he's easily one of the best in the industry for pacing. Sicario in this regard is an underrated masterpiece, I'd have it as the best action movie of all time merely from screenwriting, the omission of giving the main protagonist (Del Toro) much dialogue creates an enigmatic element where the perspective of the film would conventionally see Emily Blunt as the main character though she is not.

There are other directors who can produce better plots but I'd center that more around filmography as a whole.

I wouldn't say I have a favorite but some of my favorite movies were directed by Coppola, Michael Mann, Spielberg, Lumet, Adrian Lyne, Brian DePalma.

The likes of Nolan and Tarantino...meh. Not my thing.

Nolan became a household name simply because the Batman fans were grateful for a Batman movie that did not embarrass itself.

For me it has to be James Wan. Followed his story from the beginning, he brought horror back from the dead and also inspired me to get into horror filmmaking. He is my dude!

And that's fine. I liked The Dark Knight, it's good spectacle. He's obviously good at his craft from a technical perspective but in general he's not my cup of tea. Interstellar, Dunkirk, Oppenheimer, Insomnia etc were nothing special for me.

His best movie for me is Memento.

Currently it’s Denis Villeneuve for me. Always excited about what he does, and haven’t seen a movie of his that I haven’t really liked.

Sicario and Prisoners are among my favorites.

I don't know who Sicario is. I will Google him now.

Coppola is weird. Dropped three all-timer masterpieces in the first two Godfather films and Apocalypse Now, and then proceeded to embarrass himself for the rest of his career. Dracula was alright I guess if you ignore Keanu's performance?

Spielberg is the GOAT for me followed closely by Kubrick.

Heh, I admit I only mentioned Coppola precisely because of AN and the two Godfather movies...

The Outsiders (1983) was not bad as somewhat of a cult classic and ensemble cast.

If I got to pick one? David Lynch. Did my favorite show of all time and Mulholland Drive is one of the greatest films ever made. Inland Empire and Lost Highway are masterpieces as well.

Scorsese:
Taxi Driver
Raging Bull
Goodfellas
That’s enough right there for me

For me it’s Kubrick above anyone else.
The only one who comes close to him is Tarkovsky.

The Conversation is another all time masterpiece. He has other solid movies. You’re exaggerating quite a bit.

Spielberg is obviously a genius - ET is a masterpiece.

But John Hughes is a still my favourite.

No particular order:

Christopher Nolan
Darren Aronofsky
Denis Villeneuve
James Cameron

Translation 'he began to be considered as one of the greatest directors who ever lived' because he's a very good director. See the inconsistency?
He’s just the one most people know who is commercially successful and makes movies that are somewhat decent. Like Spielberg. So these guys will always make lists like this one. Though I would never even put them anywhere near the top. In regards to Nolan not even close to the top 20.

Yeah, given the acclaim from industry/crtitics/audiences and their popularity it's not really surprising he's considered one of the greats by a lot of people. Whether or not one likes him I think it's likely he will go down as best of his time at least.

Spielberg, though, has grown in my estimation the last few years. The fact that he's managed to make great films in five different decades is quite incredible to me.

Spielberg is also responsible for lots of dross. Including him at the very top is absolutely valid, because of his influence alone. But his films as such don’t impress me as much as many other directors managed.

Bergman
Kurosawa
Jarmusch
Finally someone with taste. Bergman and Kurosawa would be my number three and four behind Kubrick and Tarkovsky. Jarmusch is good, but not amongst my favourites.

No, and it sounds like an argumentative avenue for the sake of it I'm not particularly interested in.
Winner.

We've done a few of these, here, here (just American directors) and here.

Yeah, sure, he's made a lot of bad films as well. But as I said, it is very impressive that he's managed to make great films during such a long time. When you make as many films as he does it's impossible not to make some duds. I'm not sure where I would put him, but I definitely think having him high is valid not just because his influence but because his best films holds well against any other directors best films.

Don’t know about the quality of his best films, compared to others. Don’t think I would rate anything other than Schindler‘s List 9/10 or 10/10. lots of movies in the 7/10 and 8/10 tier however.

Jurassic Park is a 10/10 film if ever there was one!

He's not a director I'd put on my list of favourite, probably because his films aren't necessarily those that resonate with me, but Duel, Close encounters, Jaws, the Indiana Jones saga, ET, Empire of the sun, Hook, Private Ryan, Minority Report... are all very accomplished to excellent films. Then you have a few like Catch me if you can, AI, Bridge of spies, etc. that are fine films for their entertainment value. And he's been successful over 5 decades, which is super impressive in itself.

Tin tin, BGF, year one, always all are wonderful!
