Popular options that immediately spring to mind

- R9 : 96/97

- Messi : 2011/12

- Ronaldinho : 03/04

Ironically all at the same club. I'm sure there are a few more examples.

Who is your most most unplayable player over the course of one or two seasons ?

Mason Mount been pretty unplayable

(sorry mason)

Haha when I opened this thread I was thinking "unplayable" in a bad way and was going to suggest Mudryk, Mount and Sancho

But on a serious note:

Cristiano Ronaldo 07/08

Pretty much have to put the crazy messi season as #1, I dont think its close for goals/involvements/most motm etc.

Bale was unplayable at spurs in that SS role. Henrik Larsson in 2000/2001 deserves a shout too

Obviously mostly outfield players are gonna be mentioned but definitely Schmeichel and early Cech are keepers who had a similar dispiriting effect on the opposition.

Maradona was a force of nature, best player I've ever seen and had everything in his game. Dragged average teams to become Champions.

Haaland's first year at City ?

52 goals in 53 appearances for a Premier League side is pretty insane, and not likely to be broken anytime soon.

You’ve basically answered the question in this post already. Although I would say it is disrespect to Messi to even attempt to attach any particular season to his claim. He was unplayable for many a year.

Honourable mention to Yaya Toure in his prime.

Messi and cristiano for the large majority of their careers.

Ronaldinho, peak Neymar, and Zidane, I'd even mention Yaya Toure, what a player.

I think you have picked out the 3 players I would have nominated. I am not sure it’s possible to separate the 3 of them.

I am inclined to pick R9 or Ronaldinho over Messi by a hair.

Drogba at his best is nearly as undefendable a striker can get. Best back to the goal striker I have ever seen.

Its hard to pick just one. Messi's 73 goals (91 including NT goals) in 2011/12 is pretty absurd. Doubt we will see anything remotely close to that for decades.

Adebayor playing for his next contract at any point of his career.

Let us not forget the high point of that Messi season

Aaaahhh

Haaland is extremely easy to stop. You stop the ball going to the back post where Haaland is stood waiting for his tap in. Stopping City's actual good footballers putting the ball there is the problem.

Doesn't belong in a conversation with the players mentioned in the OP, who could beat you half a dozen different ways each.

Messi obviously especially at his peak in around 2009-2011.

It seemed impossible to stop Ronaldo scoring for his peak Madrid years.

Those 2 go without saying.

As a United fan, I always found Zidane a really tough opponent for us to lay a glove on, especially when Madrid were just superior to us in 2002/2003, and Hazard for Chelsea was always a worry (even if I dont rate him massively). Also when he was at his best for France he just dominated matches. Similarly Raul for Madrid - I believe he scored 4 against us over those ties in 2000 and then 2003. There was a few players through the years I just didn't like us facing.

Ronaldinho dancing through the Chelsea defense and knocking Terry down on his backside on the way to scoring a goal is one of my most unforgettable non- Utd memories. Not sure if it’s from the same season you picked.

Agree with OP list, unfortunately will have to add:

Suarez 13/14 :(

Limiting it to somebody being unplayable in one game of football (or even one half), you'd have to go some to beat Bale against Inter at the San Siro in 10/11.

Inter were the CL holders. In Bale's quarter of the pitch directly defending him were a murder's row of world class defenders - Zanetti, Maicon, Lucio, Ivan Cordoba... and he just kept running past all of them like they were pub players and firing laser beams into the bottom right corner.

I don’t disagree that record is unlikely to be broken for some time.

However, he’s never been a player who can do things on his own. He’s scored some remarkable goals due to his athleticism and reach - but he’s never been a player that truly scares a defence.

The great players could win a game on their own, Haaland can’t do that. He is however truly remarkable as a goal scorer. He’s a strange player to evaluate.

Consistently I would say Messi. Sporadically and at his highest peak, Zidane is the most dominant player that I have seen.

Messi without any doubt. No one is even close. Maybe Maradona but I am too young to know for sure.

Hate to admit it but peak Yaya was pretty unplayable. Not near the best in anything or pure quality(overall, even at his time), but for a few months a year it looked like no one would stop him whenever he felt like it.

CR7 should be obvious?

Another on list from United…Georgie Best. People literally try to kick him off pitch. Fail

Apparently, Sancho 25/26. Anyone who can get their hands on him for an extra 20 million, should.

Robben from 2012 to 2013 was unstoppable.
