White civil rights activist pretending to be black...

Asian apparently. But for me, that's Indians, Pakistanis etc.

On the 2011 UK census I'm pretty sure it had White (British, Irish etc.) Black (African, Afro-Caribbean etc.) Asian (Indian, Pakistani etc.) Mixed and the various mixed backgrounds and then just on it's own... Chinese. As if to say we don't care about other countries from the Far East, you can all just put Chinese.

Bizarre.

That whole thing is a fecking minefield.

I used 'oriental' when I first came here and got told off for it.
Can't remember if I said the other night, but was accidentally casually racist the other day. The Singapore office hired an Indian and a Chinese lass and brought them over to our office for a bit. At a leaving do they had another Chinese and Indian lass. I assumed they were Singapore-based and made comments about 'how are you finding our weather' to some brown lass who grew up in Croydon. Oops.

I'm identifying as Asian for the rest of the month

I am identifying as an yet I'm unnamed inert gas for the forseeable future.

Last Tuesday i identified as an 18th century hat stand.

Didn't get any action, hence the transition.

She's from Spokane Washington, she's still probably the blackest person there.

You guys probably stopped paying attention to this(as you should) but, this is getting weirder and weirder.

She has resigned from the NAACP. http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-...dolezal-resigns-as-president-of-spokane-naacp
She lost her job teaching at Eastern Washington University http://www.kxly.com/news/spokane-news/dolezal-out-at-ewu-inlander/33594360
She once sued Howard University for racial discrimination http://jezebel.com/hooboy-rachel-dolezal-sued-howard-university-for-discr-1711460097
And this is just bad http://www.colorlines.com/articles/...w-interview-videos-will-absolutely-baffle-you

How is that even 'casually racist'?

Seinfeld's right; the interpretation, nowadays, of all these '-isms' is so skewed.

I know you're probably joking, but sexism, racism, etc., is thrown around pretty cheaply.

I'm not saying she's mentally ill but she must have some mental...disturbance or whatever to make herself hate her own race or ethnicity (or herself) to that extent.

It sounds like she does have some sort of mental health problem. I think one of the articles mentioned her parents adopted four children who were black so perhaps some sort of feeling of being the odd one out (if she is in fact their only biological child) may have been the initial trigger for what's arisen.

But lopping off your dick and having a vagina artificially made is 'normal'?

Who cares? She obviously identifies more with black people. All concepts, precepts, norms are there to be broken down and modified. Maybe she's just ahead of the curve. This place is fecking liberal-mad most of the time, but I like the way the groupthink picks and chooses what's 'normal'. She's not the first person to find their self disassociated from their ethnic origins, physically and culturally; she just happened to really do something about it.

If gender can be dismantled into all sorts of subdivisions - cis, gender fluid, feck knows what else - then ethnic association certainly isn't set in stone, either.

Bruce Jenner sees himself as a woman, has himself 'reassigned' - hero, inspiration. White woman prefers black culture and wants to ingratiate herself within it - freak! Mentally ill!

Feck me, society is schizoid.

I agree - but I also think Bruce Jenner is mentally disturbed or whatever the correct term is. It's just society is a lot more accepting of that transformation, so most of the opposing view voices are muted.

The simple answer to this is the fact that as a society we have given validity to things that are not really deserving of it.
The raft of, quite frankly ludicrous sexual and physical orientations, political and metal "leanings" that we have pandered to and accepted, it opens the door to things like like this.

Its not being a Nazi or right wing to say that some people just need a fecking slap and told to have a look at themselves when it comes to the more absurd definitions of sexuality and race/being.

Such a vague statement, please be more specific when talking about ludicrous sexual and physical orientations, politcal and metal (?) "leanings". Don't be afraid now!

I think she has a great need to belong, which maybe stems from being the white biological child in a family with several adopted black children - she felt different. I can't see that it would have caused her any problems had she just lived her life quietly, but she obviously wanted more formal and public endorsement.

The more I read about her, the more sorry I feel for her, in a way. It's kind of Emperor's New Clothes, too. She doesn't look anything but white to me in any of her pictures, but racial identity clearly has such a self-defined element that no-one had felt the need to challenge her about it before all of this blew up.

I am banging this out on my phone, so please excuse any words that look out of place, i have fat fingers and auto correct turned on.

Its quite simple, what can you be other than a handful of things?
You either like men women or both.
You are a man or woman or want to be a man or a woman.

What else can you realistically do?
How many subsets of straight gay and dont give a feck as long as you get laid do you need?

Then you have people who believe straight white men are the root of all evil, others that blacks are, others that believe you simply must have representation for everybody no matter how minor their religon, race or political belief.

What were no expecting? No blacks no irish no dogs?

Isn't the issue here mainly that she took up her black identity in order to get to places she thought she couldn't get to if she were white, e.g. that NAACP position?

But in doing so she has disrespected and insulted the very people she was supposed to be representing.

Its disgusting that she has tried to pass herself of as black.
Its insulting to every black person in america who has had to endure the discrimination and hatred, its insulting to every black political activist and campaigner.
Its insulting to every black person who has died at the hands of hatred, as the result of poverty, who is spent time in jail because of the colour of their skin.

She says she has lived the struggle these poor bastards have had for the past god knows how many years, and its all lies.

and its all lies
Which is my point. It's not because this particular girl was identifying as black because of feeling black, but mostly doing it to somehow succeed with various things.

Know what you mean but I assumed they were foreign because of their colour and they were English. Was a bit cringey.

Both or neither.

Gender's only the simplistic thing you describe if you comfortably fit to one of the binary definitions of it that your society holds. If you aspire to a concept of masculinity or femininity that has an essence understood by those around you. There will always be and always have been people who aspire to neither or both and trying to pigeon hole them in to the binary system when neither option is accurate isn't sensible.

So this baloon passed herself off as black claiming she had black lineage despite being as white as a sheet? It's political correctness gone mad. People were too scared to point out the glaring clue that she's as black as I am.
Let's just say she was telling the truth. Her father or whoever was black and she was exactly the same colour as she is now. She would still be white, you know, since she's not black.
Am I wrong?

Actually, you would probably be wrong in that instance. If her father was a black guy, she might legitimately call herself black (even if she looked white). I think the confusion occurs because in the past, such children would be referred to as 'mixed-race' and everyone would understand. Nowadays, if your parentage is not 100% white, you might choose to identify as black.

I don't fully understand it myself, as I have also known people who looked white but didn't define themselves that way, even though they might have been just one-quarter black as opposed to three-quarters white. However, we have to be mindful of people's deeply-held feelings, I reckon. I had a good friend at work who was blonde but always got a lovely tan at the first sign of sunshine. I remarked on it, and she told me after a few years that she was actually one-quarter Asian, from India. She'd never mentioned it before and identified as 100% white. I suppose some people choose to do the opposite!

I'd say you were wrong there @cyberman, it's an issue of genetics and the kids own identity if they are from a mixed race background. You wouldn't be able to argue with Giggsy if he chose to identify more with his father and make more of his black heritage despite him appearing more caucasian. An ex of mine surprised me when she said she was half black as I'd had no inkling, hell even her musical tastes (punk and psychobilly) were whiter than mine. I did take her at her word but suspected I might be having my chain pulled until I met her sister a few weeks later who looked like a young Naomi Campbell with funky dredds.

It gets stranger when someone clearly does associate with a racial culture they have no connection to and adopts it as there own and this woman's case is definitely one of the strangest as she has clearly set out to fool people into believing she is something she is not to get where she was as a pseudo-political spokesperson. It's not always done by a conscious choice however, take the rapper Brother Ali who is white but was born albino which makes him very difficult to place racially, he grew up being bullied in a rough neighbourhood and associated more with black youths who seemed to share his struggle which led him into Hip Hop as well as seeing him convert to Islam. I don't think he ever actually claimed to be black but as he became successful people assumed he was a black albino and he never corrected them until journalists begun digging up his past and tried to label him as a fake or some sort of race traitor.

I have not described a binary system.

Binary systems tend to consist of 2 forms.

Not three.

One of my sisters friends has a white mother and black dad, she's also a twin. She is as white as white can be and her sister is completely black, weird how it works sometimes.

Yes, you are wrong. There's more to life than the colour of one's skin. Mixed race peoples do not necessarily enjoy the full advantage of one side of their genetic make up. As a child, they can fall victim to problems associated with the non-white element of their heritage and these issues can follow them throughout their life, whether they be issues of abuse, economics, education, etc.

It wasn't PC, they were genuinely fooled  the whole transracial thing is where it kicks in. And if her dad was black she would not be white she would be mixed race.
