Which United CB will leave before deadline day?

I’d like us to keep Smalling as I think he’ll still have his uses. If we’re clinging on to a lead or get a centre half injured while infront he’s the one I’d trust most to come on. There’d actually be feck all that would get past him and Maguire.

Sell/release Jones and Rojo for crying out loud. Both about as useful as a chocolate fireguard

None, like always. It seems we have a strange passion of keeping deadwood around.

More chance of us signing Messi than shifting one of our average CBs

Probably Tuanzebe, he's the only ones with much value, the others are to over paid to leave.

Can't believe its less then 4 days of the transfer window left and we have 7 first team centrebacks!!! 7!!!! in a 25 man squad..... 7!!!

Just shows you how badly this team has been built over the last decade.

I could see some Prem club with either 2 CBs that badly need a 3rd (Everton) or needing a starter after realizing they might go down if they don't get a better CB (Watford) spending some cash on one paying like 12M for Smalling and Ole being happy to take it.

I'd also be okay with Tuanzebe on loan to Everton since he'd get a really good chunk of games with them having Mina and Keane as injury-prone starters and then their backup is just Holgate, a championship level player. Tuanzebe would probably get 20 Prem starts in an average season there assuming one of Mina or Keane stays healthy and gets 35 starts but the ends up with about 20 some injuries. That's pretty good. Though ideally we could get him a good few games here if we just picked one of Jones or Smalling and sold the other along with Rojo this summer.

You can surely loan Rojo to a Spanish club? Villareal signed Fuenes Mori last season from Everton and Rojo is just about a better CB than him. Given Sporting clube shipped 5 yesterday they'd happily take him back I'm sure.

I doubt anything sums up Man. United's scrambled thinking than your CB decisions last 2-3 seasons. Jones and Rojo annually missing half a season injured, give them new 4 year contracts.

Obviously Maguire and Lindelof is going to be first choice. I think you should keep Axel and trust him to come in when one of those is injured/suspended as that's the only way he's going to learn (if you send him to Newcastle Steve Bruce will play him at right back as that's where he was for us start of last season).

Can see you playing back 3 on occasions, maybe against other top 6 clubs and a formation Maguire excels in.

Jones or Rojo. Or both.
Think Ole will keep Rojo. If we don’t get another DM this window, which is looking unlikely, then I think he’s the best to cover that position if/when we get injuries. Not ideal, but what have we got if McTom and/or Matic pick up the inevitable injury.

I’d definitely keep Tuanzebe - initially I wanted he to go on loan, but now I want him to get time for us this season.

Smalling has been our best defender for years (not saying a lot I know) so is the best back-up at least and should stay as we progress the squad forward.

I do like Rojo, but he’s such a red-card risk, particularly with VAR coming-in, and he can’t stay fit any more - should go.

Jones... has to go. He has times were he looks like the best defender in the squad, but the injuries are just too much. Should’ve gone a while ago. Will probably look good for whomever he joins, but we can’t go on like this with him.

Bailly - injured so non-starter, but still a tiny bit of hope that he could come good. Time is running-out though.

In reality - Tuanzebe will probably be the only one to go.

Phil Jones for me. He's a poor version of Maguire. Rojo can play LCB as a Lindelof backup. Smalling can play in games where we need to defend and not play from the back and Tuanzebe can be Maguires backup.

Time to invest in Tuanzebe and also sell Bailly when he makes it back.

The 5 to keep...
Maguire
Lindelof
Tuanzebe
Rojo
Smalling (Sell when he can be replaced adequately)

Jones to go now.... Bailly and Smalling in the next 12 months.
Maguire plays on the left.

Jones and Rojo are injury prone, average defenders who will be on high wages relative to other clubs. What club with any sense signs them?

Smalling is an excellent option to have in the squad.

Hopefully Smalling. System over individual players always and the others can at least pass a football without whipping their body like Beckham taking a free kick.

I’d offload Jones, Bailly and Rojo and then keep Tuanzebe instead of loaning him out. Maguire, Lindelof, Smalling and Tuanzebe would be our best defensive group in years.

I'd get rid of Jones and Rojo. Use that money and get defender who isn't the finished article but has lots of potential

That plus we would have Maguire, Lindelof, Smalling, Bailly (When he's back) and Tuanzebe. Then next season move Smalling on and improve the defence even more. Maybe another world class partner for Maguire?

Just get rid, give Jones, Rojo and Bailey To charity if need be, I mean at least it will save on the wage bill and as for the rest listen to any offers and make it clear that their days at Utd are over.
I’d keep Smalling and Tuanzebe as back up.

Just two maybe-s.
  1. Darmian, also a CB, he's a versatile defender, can play across all back four or five. He only played one pre-season close-door game. So hopefully he'll be leaving/sold soon.
  2. Tuanzebe, out on loan, because of Maguire. Not likely but hey who knows last minute. Maguire and Lindelof seems to be the first choice, with exp players Jones, Smalling and Rojo. That's plenty. Not sure if Ole dare to risk Axel at CB, or even want to play him at FBs. So better get more game times from loan.

Bailly has proved nothing but no one will take him while he's injured.

So get rid of Jones and Rojo.

But I think none of them will go. Happy to take the money , sit on the bench and get the odd game.

Tuanzebe goes out on loan and the rest stays. Ideally we should have shipped out Rojo but now it feels too late to find a Club thats interested in him.

Has anyone even shown any interest in one of them at all. I can see them all staying, and just taking up wages.

Though knowing us, we will still manage to have a period where every one of them in injured and we end up with a midfielder playing CB at some point during the season.

The obvious ones are Darmian, Jones, and Rojo but realistically Darmian and Rojo.

Tuanzebe and Smalling should be backups with Jones filling in if one of them gets injured.

Rojo seems to have gotten a lot of preseason minutes over Smalling, not sure if it's just to build up his fitness or Ole actually likes him?

Maguire Bailly and Lindelof shall be our main CBs. Tuanzebe can be kept as a back up option.
By next season, I need all these deadwood CBs (Rojo, Jones and Smalling) gone and we sign a decent back up CB with that money.

Maguire Bailly Lindelof Tuanzebe and a back up CB should be our CBs.

The thing is, I don't think we'll be rushing the 'players out' category since they can leave to foreign clubs all the way up until the start of September in some cases. So, if we're talking about our deadline day of August 8th, I wouldn't be surprised if a player doesn't leave our club by that date unless there's suddenly a Premier League club in for one of our players that we are willing to let go. At the moment, I think J.Pereira on Loan and Matteo Darmian out are the main bits of outgoing business I expect us to do, along with Lukaku out and hopefully another player in.

I think we will go into this season with seven CB's - but Bailly won't even be fit until January and one of our CB's could be sold then instead, while Rojo could be used as more of an auxiliary Left Back (even though he's terrible there IMO).

As for the situation in general:

Lindelof & Maguire start every Premier League game barring injury/suspension for me, unless one of them makes multiple mistakes that cost us games in a row which I doubt. It's my opinion that Smalling & Tuanzebe should be the ones knocking on the door and perhaps starting the Cup games together (due to experience I think Smalling should be on the bench most weeks for this season, but Tuanzebe should eventually replace him if he continues to improve, he's very young for a CB so I see no issue with bedding him in). The rest should of course be eased out of the squad, but it will take at least a couple of years to get us to the point of five CB's in our squad I reckon.

On the other hand, if we actually wanted to make good money on a player, Smalling is probably the only one we can sell and fetch £25m+. However, I think selling Smalling weakens our overall squad more than selling Bailly/Rojo/Jones, so I'd rather we kept him. My hope is that if Ole sees out his contract and does well, this will be our CB options going into his third season:

1st: Maguire & Lindelof
3rd: Tuanzebe
4th: Smalling
5th: Jones

With us looking to move on Jones and sign a young up and coming CB (or we'd already have one we're developing in anticipation of getting rid of Jones).

I would like to say rojo. But he seems content to sit in the stands collecting his big wage until his contract runs out

Think smalling will go over Jones unfortunately as he probably still commands a decent fee. We are stuck with Jones forever it seems.. prob get a nice testimonial.. it will be emotional

That would be a stupid move in our part, strengthening a rival on what they lack off. He's our best CB in terms of man marking: Hazard, Kane, Suarez, etc. I don't see any of our other CBs can do that.
I have no idea what games you've been watching.. but can I have a glass of whatever it is you were drinking?

Rojo has to be first in line to leave for me. I mean, he is genuinely crap. Mistimed tackles and 70 yard passes to the opposing goalkeepers have frustrated me for the last 5 years.
Jones next, not only is he always injured - when he is fit he is injuring other players in training. Liability.
Baily - Combination of Jones and Rojo.
Smalling and Tuanzebe should be kept on. Smalling has shown he can atleast defend reasonably well if nothing else and as for Axel - i thought his performances in the championship were overhyped somewhat but he has been brilliant in pre season and i actually expect Lindelof will have a job on his hands in being first choice with Maguire

It’s more likely that they all had a minutes quota to hit, and Ole wanted them to hit it with some sports science data analytics to back the reasoning.
It’s also likely that we need players like Rojo, Tuanzebe or Darmian to have a reasonable amount of match fitness in order to sell or loan them in the final days of the window.
There’s lots of hypothetical situations that can be drawn up to suit any agenda, with no facts to back them up, yet.

Smalling is our most experienced CB, and apart from Maguire, the most reliable in the air and against physical attackers too - it’s unlikely that we’d put him at the bottom of any pecking order. Especially since Bailly has a long term injury, and Jones will likely follow him at some point.

He's also poor on the ball and the way Ole wants to play needs ball playing CBs, same reason Smalling doesnt get picked for England - anyway we will find out in a few days what Ole sees as his CB pecking order.

Rojo definitely needs to go. One of Bailly or Jones. I'd probably prefer Bailly to go because Jones is part of the English contingent and having a lot of players from your own country represents better on you as a club imo. Bailly is injured though and six centre backs is still too many so Jones may need moving on. Im not convinced we'll manage to shift either though as Ed's valuations tend to be totally unrealistic

If Rojo doesn't go i'll be gobsmacked. I forgot about Bailly but one of him, Smalling and Jones needs to go too.

Madness to sell Smalling. Jones or rojo needs to go, bailly injured and will likely survive this window.

Rojo and darmian out for any fee.

As it stands now, United have 26 senior players but one of them (Bailly) is injured and may be out until Christmas. If Bailly isn't given a squad place while he's injured, it's exactly 25 players. 12 of them homegrown or English. That includes Tuanzebe but excludes Dalot and other U-21 players like Greenwood. Because you can have as many U-21 players in your squad as you want without affecting the maximum of 25 senior players. Just maybe, no one leaves.

If I was a betting man I would take a punt on Rojo. I think he will go (loan) which isnt really good for us as we would need to cut him loose full stop.

Cant see Bailly leaving as he is in a wheelchair right now and cant see Smalling or Jones leaving
