All in on Maignan? or maybe someone else?

All effort should be put into Diogo Costa.

No idea. But he must be able to pass. Sick of teams suffocating us and inducing fear so damn easily.

We should go for a more balanced keeper - a leader, very good shot stopper, confident in his control of the box, and unafraid to run out of it form time to time. Not sure about names, but those are the essential qualities.

The reason i wantMaignan is because he is in his prime & seems to be someone that can be 1 of those gks that could get better as they get even older.

Diogo Costa is younger and has more upside. Furthermore, he looks good at reading shooters on penalties too.

Just for the sake of revamping our goalies completely, I would bring in Keylor Navas (on a free) for our cup games.

The more film i see of Costa then ore convinced I am we make a move this summer given DDG contract situation.

I think we should be going for Meslier from Leeds longer term. If they go down we'll be able to pick him up cheaply.

Physically commanding, and good with his feet, still only 23 and has got nearly 120 premier league games in the bag.

I have been impressed by him in the games I have seen although thats not many.

Have only watched Costa at the world cup, so what's his club form like?

Conceded 27 goals in 37 club matches in total (no domestic cup games though), got 18 clean sheets. It won't be enough for Porto to win the title bar a disaster from Benfica. Here is a compilation from his best saves from last season in Liga Portugal.

What really gets me raving about him is his ability to stop penalties (see below). He even saved the goal twice on a penalty that had to be re-taken. Absolute badass.

His passing game also... watch this (screw the music).

Thanks. Some good videos to watch there. Goalkeepers are tricky to choose. Credit to Fergie for going with a callow 20 year old from Iberia to replace Edwin. Sometimes choosing a youngster with high potential is best.

Also, it's interesting that the best shot-stoppers are not always the best at saving penalties, which is the ultimate test of shot-stopping. De Gea is an example. So what do Costa's penalty saves say about his general shot-stopping ability? Anything?

People need to be realistic

At best, they’re just looking for someone to provide competition to De Gea

It’s not going to be one of those top names. It’ll be someone like Noppert

We've put too much effort into scouting Costa to be anyone else at this point. It just feels like we've earmarked him like we did with De Gea.

The only real issue is the budget. Do we have to have a Claudio Bravo type season, where we just get anyone in who can play out from the back on the cheap? Then address it properly next season?

saving penalties ? Nice.

When was the last time DDG saved a penalty ?

Literally anyone but Travers in the PL would likely be an upgrade. Just anyone as a bare minimum.

I would put 70M + De Gea (or Fred, Maguire, Lindelof, Dalot) for Maignan every day of the week.

But keep calm, De Gea will stay one more year as the number one.

If Qatar buy us Donnarumma and Sanchez

About time this club was ambitious and ruthless at the same time

I’ve seen nothing to suggest he’s much better with his feet than DDG.

He’s been awful this Season too.

De Gea is bad at the majority of what a goalkeeper needs to do. Sweeping, claiming crosses, long passing and involvement in build-up make up a far bigger proportion of goalkeeper actions than shot-stopping (in which he’s now average to poor and has been since 2018). For each of these he’s one of the worst goalkeepers in the whole of Europe. As such, we can either sign a truly elite/potentially elite number one (Maignan, Costa or Mardashvilli) or a cheaper stop-gap (Raya, Samba, Pau Lopez et al) and still make a massive upgrade. The second scenario would leave scenario 2 until next Summer.

Budget is no excuse. Henderson’s sale will pay for any of the cheap options, given his homegrown status. The only question is whether we go big or not. In any case there are at least a dozen available keepers that would do a better job than L Frank Baum’s scarecrow.

I'd go for Martinez - we need a character back there once again: absolutely the opposite of DDG. Putting him ahead of Costa because of his PL experience, but I guess I'd settle with for either. Frankly, right now, I'd settle for almost anyone, DDG is turning more into a Barthez (or Marcel Marceau as I used to call him) than a VDS or Peter S.

Costa - well, anyone can have a great highlights reel, for me, Martinez has possibly been the best in the PL this season (although I admit not seen huge number of Villa games) and was pretty much flawless at WC. But, I wouldn't cry if i was Costa

Actually I don't mind giving Henderson a chance as our no.1. Personally, we need a GK that can be dominant in terms of ability as well as character. Personally felt that De Gea was lucky in the recent PK shootout and as a fan we have close to no hope for De Gea saving a PK.

GK I would consider
1. Costa (only if we extend De Gea for a year or keep Henderson around while he adapt to the EPL)
2. Martinez (Impressive WC Final and EPL ready)
3. Pickford (as a budget alternative if Everton is relegated)

This statement can be applied to our current crop of players. Every opponents tactics against us are simple: "Press and watch them crumble."
It's actually simpler than that: ask the crowd to cheer and we crumble...

I'm a huge DDG fan boy but yeah, I have to admit it's over now. Need to have someone who can play first time passes.

Now, we will see a drop off because he is the world's best shot stopper in my opinion so we see an issue there in tight games but the benefit will be that we are more proactive and we hopefully not be under pressure.

Diogo Costa

A good chance he reaches a very high level and becomes one of the best ball playing keepers in Europe

This should be a priority signing. Like if we have any idea if a budget or whatever we should be sending offers to Porto as we speak

The Milan keeper would be my choice.
It occurs to me, that I've never seen him in a league game which is really weird. But, didn't Lloris keep him out of the French team? that isn't the greatest credentials for me.
As I say, though, don't know enough about him to really comment

Should be our number 1 priority if this is true, with no real competition for him looking likely as well, unless I'm forgetting someone.

There should be no competition for him.

Which top teams need a new keeper? That's the big question.

Real - No
Barca - No
Arsenal - No
City - who knows - maybe
Liverpool - no
Bayern - Maybe
Chelsea - Maybe
Juve - No
AC - No
PSG - No

Should pretty much get a free run at him.

Yeah, I'm sold.

I would guess national teams may choose a little different. Maguire keeps someone out of a spot in England to

De Gea hasn't been remotely close to being the best shot stopper in the world for five years now (barring a few months last season where he wound the clock back briefly). I honestly don't know how anyone can have watched him when he was truly elite at that and not see how unbelievably far off that level he now is. He makes the occasional great save still (nowhere near as many as some make out) but also lets in plenty of goals that any good shot-stopper is expected to save. Overall he's spent almost the entire last half a decade being decidedly average at the one thing he was once great at.
