Gaming What is the best video game soundtrack ever

Pretty much anything on the Amiga. Absolutely brilliant time for game music and a huge step up of what was possible. Turrican 2 and Prince of Persia obvious highlights.

But everyone in here is naming top soundtracks, great to see!

This thread was a roaring success considering I was just drunk and wanted to tell the world how much I loved Quackshot

Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2

*Devil horns*

Having just played Hellblade 2, that soundtrack was also really good, more so because it fit with the scenes it was played in so well.

Walking Dead The Final Season also had some great songs, though of course a very short soundtrack.

Some individual tracks from solid soundtracks:

1. Ori And The Blind Forest - Climbing The Ginso Tree
2. Ori And The Will Of The Wisps - Mora The Spider
3. Halo: Combat Evolved - The Gun Pointed At The Head Of The Universe
4. The Elder Scrolls - Skyrim - The Streets Of Whiterun
5. StarCraft 2: Legacy Of The Void - Honor Guide Me
6. The Last Guardian - End Titles: The Last Guardian Suite
7. Portal 2 - Triple Laser Phase
8. Metal Gear Solid 5 - Quiet's Theme

Streets of Rage 2

Close the thread.

Licensed music in game soundtracks is great and all, but nothing stops you turning off the game sound and putting on any compilation CD from the time and getting the same experience. It has to be original compositions to count for me.

Chronotrigger is an easy one for me. Haven't even finished the game but know the soundtrack by heart.

BG3 is a recent all time great addition.

Obviously a GTa game. Not sure if 3, SA or 5 though. I lean towards San Andreas.

Or maybe Brutal Legend? Plenty of metal goodness going on there.
I was going to say Brutal Legend. It’s a great collection of metal tunes obviously put together by genuine fans.

Vice City is also fantastic. I just had it permanently on V-Rock. Priest, Maiden, Quiet Riot, definitely shaped my musical tastes growing up. Even Love Fist, who aren’t an actual band!

Moving away from soundtracks to scores, Final Fantasy has already been mentioned, but I’d say Yoko Shimomura’s work on the series has been excellent, as well as her Kingdom Hearts work. Then there’s Gustavo Santaolalla on The Last of Us, and Bear McCreary on God of War.

Also the original Pokemon games. Pure nostalgia.

1. Between Starcraft & Warcraft II as subjective pick.

2. Jeremy Soule and DJ Lazlow obviously one of the greatest sound institutions in gaming there.

3. Adam Gilmore for retro machines C64 and Atari XE. (Draconus, Zybex etc.)

4. Final Fantasy IX - Cid's Theme.

5. Donkey Kong Country.

Had strong competition from Golden Axe, Double dragon or Final Fight, but have to agree. Perfect 90s beats.

I'm a huge fan of the soundtracks of both the original Deus Ex and DE: Human Revolution as well.

Lot of RTS games of the 90s had some pretty great soundtracks, namely Starcraft, Command & Conquer and Age of Empires.

Starcraft had the unique musical styles for each of the three races

C&C had tracks that were great battle tracks, calm before the storm tracks and desolate tracks

AoE had memorable tracks meshing together lots of instruments from the different civilisations you could play as.

Donkey Kong Country 2

Dragon Ball Z Budokai 1, 2 and 3. The problem with these ones is that pretty much every song was plagiarised. That's why the soundtrack was so good, though!

FF should really have its own thread when it comes to the best soundtrack, especially with the golden age of 4-10. It's just unfair on the other games at this point

Overall, I think Nier: Automata and To The Moon.

Final Fantasy games have some amazing soundtracks too. Celes and Terra from FF6, Aerith and Cloud from FF7, Julia from FF8, Beatrix from FF9, Distant World from FFX to name just a few.

Yennefer's theme in TW3 is also amazing.

And if trailer's soundtracks count, nothing beats Mass Effect 2, and the only one that goes close to it is Mass Effect 3. Jade Empire and Dragon Age: Origins have also cracking soundtracks.
