What is Dan James good at?

Dan James is still good as an impact sub. About the right price too.

He did well in the first few games of the season, but obviously he doesn't have the technique, strategy and experience to be a starter. With his pace and enthusiasm, we can utilize him as an impact sub on the flanks.

I'm not sure about his growth potential, but he's definitely low key right now so hopefully he's using the time productively and not just idling.

He can be coached to do the basics right. He thinks he is a striker and tries to score. He should be ordered to keep it simple and put in a decent cross instead of trying to score all the time.

He is not bad at modeling the new kits every now and then and I imagine VDB will be high on the list when he arrives as well; Bruno and Pogba may well be starters on the pitch but they should definitely be reserves when it comes to the modelling side of things.

Probably a loan to a club like Derby or Brentford would do him the world of good.

I think he would actually do really well in a team like Leciester and Wolves. They are both teams who can create good football but at the same time won’t come up against opponents who sit deep against them too often. With space to run into, Dan James can be a menace and would really thrive.

Sadly one of his weaknesses is not having the creativity to break down a low block team which is what Utd come up against virtually every game outside of the big 6.

He always reminds me of Craig Roberts. I guess short Welsh guys all look the same to me.

James has more goals+assists than Buendia, the latter of which plenty of people think would be a good cheap option for ~£15m.

But he doesn't play for Manutd so he is instantly better.

We forget that James was a starter between Jan-March when our winning run started.

Terrible take, Pogba is way better looking than VDB and Dan James.

Doesn't mean he was any good in that run, his only contribution since December was against Lask.

Doesn't mean we need to get rid.... he isnt taking minutes from anyone. He is a useful player when we play counter attacking brand and someone to bring on if we are 2/3 up and one of the wingers need a rest.

He runs really fast.

He can be developed into a decent, reliable squad player; nothing more, nothing less.

For God's sake leave him alone. He's been played out of position and was forced into the starting 11 for a majority of the season when he absolutely should have had time to come in as a sub and work his way into the team. If you want to ask what someone is good at, then ask what is lingard good at, or Mata good at, or Pereira good at, or Phil Jones for that matter. They are the ones stealing a living not Dan James. Give the guy a chance

Should we just stick James on the left as a backup for Rashford? He just should exclusively play in that position, it's natural to him and is able to cut in.

Much more effective out there.

Put one on the head of Moore for the disallowed goal too.

Probably better off playing with that Striker with aerial ability.

He’s got some quality, he’s just not United quality right now.

And there in lies the problem with our attitude towards him. Our squad options are really shit.

It's the guys first season playing in the Premier league, he's still young and has time to improve.

I’ve detailed many times that I like the guy. He’s young, a real grafter, rapid and seems a genuinely good guy. However, I truly doubt his credentials as a current and future Manchester United player and would only give him one more season to prove himself, and even this is clouded by the fact that I like him. If he’s poor this season, I’d ship out next summer while his value is still relatively high, unlike Jones or Lingard’s current value for example.

He will come good here and will surprise a lot of people. Let him develop. The problem was Ole overplayed him and he got tired. First season in premier league, people need to be patient.

If you sign Sancho, having a starting front 3 of Rashford Martial and Sancho with James and Greenwood on the bench is an excellent line up and probably what James was bought for in the first place. I think he offers a lot against tired stretched defences in the last 20 mins of any game.

He was bought for peanuts, with hardly any first team experience, let alone premier league experience.

He wasn't signed to be a starter - at least not initially. It's unfortunate he had to start games due to injuries, as bellends just slated him as he obviously wasn't ready to step up just yet. He didn't even do that badly, to be fair. Didn't he win our player of the month in his first month?

Give the kid a break.

Watched the Wales match. You can tell he is much more comfortable on the left. So cover for Rashford.
I also noticed he had a good understanding with Davies at left back. Hed be much better off working with Shaw. He was in his element coming in to recieve the ball at feet then instead darting and making runs in behind down the touch line with simple balls down the line.

The modern day fan is fickle. How can you expect a player from the championship to be a top performer in his first season in the premier league?Give the lad some time.

Hmmm, do "we forget"? What aspects of said winning run would you suggest could be attributed to Dan James being a starter?

I don't think anyone "expects" it. That has nothing to do with being able to make a reasoned evaluation of his abilities and potential. A lot of people make very reasonable posts about Dan James and are met with a variation on "Oh so he's British so of course he gets torn apart on here"/"It's his first season ffs give him time"/"He plays for United so that's why some United fans don't rate him". It gets tiring when people choose not to respond to specific, valid comments about the player.

He has the mentality of a British traditional winger, just run with the ball then cross or shoot without any creativity. Turning him into inside forward was a mistake, just stick with the L/R midfield who help the full back defending the area, or when we switch to 3-5-2, he should be a wing back not a striker.

We might though his pace could be exploited for terrorizing the defenders, but everyone knows he has no creativity or intelligence in the final third. They are happy to see his meaningless run, let him get the ball, then nothing would be happened.

So far I haven't seen enough reasoned evaluation on him recently. People just criticised him and want him to be sold this summer when the lad had 3 goals and 6 assists in the league last season which considered to be not bad for a first season new player who just experienced his first ever PL season.

Young player, with good assets of his incredible pace, ability to cross with both feet & tends to win lot of free kicks which benefit for Bruno who is also good taking set pieces. He might not be Sancho or Mbappe but definitely deserves one more season with us as a squad impact player which is the role that he was meant to brought in.

He was very good in his first 5 months with us and showed some potential why Ole signed him. He was making goals in his first month (August) with us, the only one who offered threat when Rashford went sleeping in September and he was making assists in the 3 months with us (October, November & December).

I mean this is literally the third or fourth post of this thread:

I just don’t see it with the kid. He’s a likeable character and I want him to succeed, but the gaps in his game are worrying. He’s quick and has plenty of hustle, but his decision making is extremely suspect and his final ball is very poor. He’s a young player and hopefully has time to improve, but I’m not convinced he will to any meaningful extent. In fairness, he was thrown into the deep end this season. He should have spent the year playing soft minutes against weaker opposition and tired legs, but he featured more prominently than I expected. I think it really hurt his confidence as the season wore on and his game suffered even more. It’s far too soon to give upon him, though. Fingers crossed he can develop into a useful squad player.

And there's plenty more like that. Absolutely fair comments.

Perhaps if people responded directly/quoted the posts they find unfair it would be a bit more of a worthwhile discussion?

Mate, did you even read what I posted? That guy literally said the same thing as me that James showed some promising and can be developed into good squad player. There is nothing bad about his comment, that’s one of positive feedback.

What about you look at those negative feedbacks of him that wanted him to be gone this year and they don’t even see him to be good enough being as a squad player? Those aren’t reasonable and you will find tons of them.

Don’t count positive feedback as “negative reasonable feedbacks”!

Don't know mate, that seems pretty clear to me

You said you haven't seen enough of that lately, maybe quoting some examples would help me understand?

What about you read his next ones:

Why are you ignored the whole of his post? You can make Pogba looks shite if you only highlight the negative idea about him and gave it to some clueless people.

You said you haven't seen enough of that lately, maybe quoting some examples would help me understand?

The first five posts on the page 1 should give you enough idea. I don't know how you even missed those.

Not just that.. they expect like every player in the squad to be WC. Is it James fault that he was thrown into the first team?

He is a victim of his own success, he done well at the start but was never meant to solve Manutd's winger problems. It is unfair on him, he can be a squad option in some games, that is what he was brought to do.

I have seen people saying he is 21 and pulisic is 21 so why cut him slack.. it's two different talents, one is there to start and one is here to improve.

When he was signed him, he was never someone anyone said he will be the next number 7 or anything. Has he been United standard? No, but he has shown he can play a part in some games for us. I am not expecting him to start many games, he gives us options in big games for the counter and in league cup and Fa cup games.

I hate it when people compare two players because of their young age. If every young player was dismissed because they arent the finished article by 21, Chelsea would've missed out on the amazing Didier Drogba.

Overrated, check his numbers. :wenger:
