What is a 'Pointless Club'?

All the teams who exist to play against United like it's a cup final and then go bend over the week after. Most specifically with goalkeepers who concede for fun and suddenly play like Lev Yashin at OT.

German clubs too. Leverkusen, Leipzig, Schalke over the years. Bayern and Dortmund don't qualify obviously.

A club without any ties to its community is pointless. In the US teams move from one city to another sometimes. That is truly pointless.

Imagine MU moved to another city.

By (mainly) calling them franchises they're at least more honest about it.

We could be called Man United anywhere. That’s the name sorted . We could get moved to Dubai. Be part of an oil super league.

Not particularly, but I couldn't really get on board with the extreme outrage when the PL and UCL are super leagues in all but name.
Teams in the PL have earned that right on merit, closed shop means you can never earn it

The real answer is of course “none.”

Barca is being strangled by financial constraints of La Liga because many of the other teams are in danger of financial collapse. Those clubs are speed bumps to a two or 3 team race…. But you still need them to have games.

Bad guys are even less pointless. You can call City “plastic” or “soulless” … but could the obvious choice of team for Jaime’s horrible, front runner father in Ted Lasso be anyone else? They make a good “bad guy” in real life and fiction, and good villains are important.

I’m American, so I don’t have a “local team” to support in European football. But people have called my hometown NFL team “pointless” for years. But I wouldn’t change being a Jaguars fan. Just being good enough that people took playing us seriously… and winning a playoff game, had the city in near euphoria this year.

If the little victories didn’t mean something, you could argue the whole thing would be “pointless”.

But the vast majority that go down these days return within 2 years 3 tops because they can just overwhelm the 'dreamer' clubs with their "reward" money for finishing bottom of the prem. It may look fair on paper but in reality it's made an already near impossible task for many clubs (getting to the top flight) even harder.

I'm watching a bit of league one this season and 15-20 years ago I'd fancy whoever goes up in that division to build on it next season and maybe go up again (it's a really strong league at the top this year), however now they will probably have their best players cherrypicked by the clubs splashing their relegation reward money about.

And don't get me started on Uefa slipping in their new superleague esque format when supporters were too busy protesting the ESL.

Point being fairness in football doesn't exist and probably never have, ESL would just be another straw on the camels back as opposed to suddenly going from one extreme to another.

Those clubs were "dreamer" clubs at one point as well, by reward money I assume you mean parachute payments rather than the amount they get for the position they finish in

In simplistic terms football in England owes a lot to Man United, Liverpool and Arsenal, if not for those 3 clubs insisting that the collective TV rights remained then the PL would not exist, if those clubs had negotiated their own media rights the English league would be like La Liga has been for decades

Oh man …. I didn’t even consider the POV of Jets fans on this. They might be the only fanbase that would choose their own team in a thread like this, for sure. The passion is so high though.

I was surprised they didn’t try harder for someone like Carr… they are so talented; literally just need someone who can just not mess things up at QB.

TBH I don't really follow the NFL, I just know the Jets are .... well whatever they are!
