What does Michael Carrick do?

I had the same thought today when the TV camera panned to the bench. Ole in discussion on a change of player And tactics with McKenna with Carrick sat in the middle of them not moving/looking/speaking, looked glazed over!!. much as i loved him as a player he needs to show a little more spark as part of the coaching team... Dunc Fergussan stood with no jacket on in cold rain roaring at his players must have inspired Everton - compare and contrast...

So the camera pans on him for about a total of 20 seconds in a match and in those moments you decided that because at that exact time he wasn't saying anything that he has "no spark".....ffs to Caf is a fickle bunch....:lol::lol:

He can't be much company sat there zoned out for 90 mins each week

Offer something . You see McKenna offering Ole advice same for Phelan.

Then you have Carrick sat as still as a Martial . The guy is on massive wages sitting on the best seat in the house . Stealing a living

Coaching staff could have different roles. Carrick might be more vocal in the training field, tactics what not, while McKenna could be the person in charge of analyzing opposition players and doing charts and maps etc. How can we possibly know what each coach is meant to do based on few seconds of footage per week?

Some absolute nut cases on here. Clutching at straws constantly!

How many coaches at opposition teams do you see doing anything? What matters is what he does on the training field.

Plebs.

Is this a parody of the thread “what does Phelan do?” from Fergie’s era?

Or is it a serious thread?

Carrick was put in place by Mourinho, and quite obviously impressed enough to be kept on in Ole's staff. Even LvG described him as a player-coach when we was here, so he clearly makes a decent impression in training with regards to helping/coaching the players.

Yeah, but that's not enough. He's got to impress the Caf by doing something in those 4-5 second clips of him on the bench. Only then will he have true value.

Very difficult for him to impress the experts over here. You know some posters know almost everything about tactics, coaching... you name it they know it.

If he's been coaching Fred and McTominay, I'd say there's plenty of evidence there that he's managed to do something...

This. People who don’t talk much are undervalued in terms of friendship. I bet Carrick is a great listener.

In fact given the stress of being United manager, I imagine they have a bit of a setup to keep Ole from losing his marbles publicly. Something in the mould of a soundproof room with no windows for Carrick to shepherd Ole to, when he starts to get incoherent and twitchy. Think ending scene of the Aviator for reference.

This is Ole’s safe space. No need for smiles or nicknames in here. He can curl into a ball in the corner or go pantless if he needs to. All the while Carrick stays perfectly calm, maintaining his docile, thousand mile stare. A true friend and stoic.

Half an hour of this, and Ole is ready to be United manager again.

Most definitely

Carrick is there for the dark times when Ole is by himself hyperventilating after losing all hope and faith in being able to replicate Fergie's glory,

Carrick brings in the tea,, the 1999 best moments dvds and old pictures of Fergie alongside Ole, to lift spirits in the office.

Phelan is the senior wise yoda figure who presents Ole with tokens of wisdom such as 'not to fear the unknown',' losing is a natural part of football', and refreshes his memory on what Fergie would do and say in the same situation whilst facing adversity. Then goes through and spoon feeds him on what formation and strategy Fergie use to adopt

Ole's input is to chime in about how he wants the boys like press like Klopp and counter and cross like Fergie and express themselves freely on the pitch and score messy goals.

 Jokes aside..

We know so little. Yet what we know so far.. "individual suggestions" to players.
So (1) individual coaching I guess.

Interview comments
Lukaku
: praises Carrick for helping him in attacking movements (this is during Lukaku's good first season).

Interview Comments and Game Performances
Pogba
: praised Carrick for helping his timings run off the ball into the box to get to the end of crosses. (performances and goal stats prove it well, Pog 2nd season)

Game Performances speculations for me
McTominay: his forward passess especially the way he kick the ball hard to our attackers feet in tight spaces reminds me a lil bit of Carrick-esque. Did McT commented about this? Anyway his passing abilities gradually improves... now a lot compare to when he first started. Also improving passing awareness u know spreading passes out wide I notice he now look around when making passing decisions, used to only have limited vision i.e. passing to only nearby players or back passes where he can quickly see.

Conclusion - wouldn't surprise me MC gave individual "coaching" to every players. Now whether they listen or not is different story.

(2) 2nd role imo is to be the senior figure, representing the United Way of Fergie. Tbh I'm not seeing any other senior current players that can represent that, just a know-what is left eg. Mata, Young and De Gea. So his unlisted job is to be a role model and a senior that keep in check the players. But he's not a good motivator and being a role model has limited influences.

Well the dunc is from Scotland so well used to bitter cold weather and as for the inspired bit, well thats the managers job and not the coaches on match day or is it the, one rule for them and another thing here .

For all the good young midfielders we have on the books he should be the ideal Coach to guide them based on what he achieved as a player.
Whether he can get that across to them is another issue but we should see that in time.

Jurgen Klopp on Liverpool "bench" when not in front. Says a lot really.

If Ole was on the sideline screaming "Just fecking shoot!" Rashford would've been on his third hat trick already.

Probably the same as the rest of the clueless management team, not a hell of a lot.

Not really, but it does show the confidence a manager has in himself that he gets up and gets involved in a match as much as he can in order to keep his players alert to what is actually happening. In other words to keep them on their toes and pass some instructions on to them. And not just sit on the bench looking like a guy who has just realized he has dandruff.

Does that picture look any different from these days?

Thought the exact same. Ole looks so out of depth when in need of new ideas that it is baffling to say the least. Like what was he thinking of not making subs at the half time.

Was he thinking lingard will do something good suddenly? Ole's game management has been terrible and today was no different. As for his assistants, well I don't even think they are doing anything.

Been saying it on here for some time. How can we expect a team to produce winning football when the coaching staff have won nothing through coaching. Granted, Phelan had his day with SAF but if we are honest He was absolutely gash when he went it alone, so his record is pretty tarnished.
Ole doesn’t help himself - doesn’t seem to have a ruthless streak in him. Maybe that’s why the players think they are un droppable at times. He comes across as easy to please.

There was a shot of the bench just before half time and Carrick wasn't even watching the match. Eyes down picking at his fingernails.

Its called motivating the team. Ole’s face shows a man defeated everytime we go a goal down.

Is it too hard to shout instructions at the players?

That’s what good manager do, inspire the players.

Yes I saw that too. More than just a quick glance at his hands or any kind of nail biting moment, like he was distancing himself.

I've talked about their disgraceful body language before and got blasted by some topper than top redders

Apparently it makes no difference how the manager conducts himself in the dug out or in pressers, because apparently he does all the talking behind closed doors and it would be a sin in and of itself, to criticize or show disapproval to these precious lot

So it doesn't matter if he's hunched up looking as if he's about to curl into a ball on the bench. It doesn't matter if he's pumping his fists after equalizing against Sheffield United. And it doesn't matter if he's all smiles at full time after a loss or cracking jokes in his post interviews with the press.

And we wonder why Rashford is laughing/giggling to himself the other week after he miss controlled a loose ball.

I've always said a team mirrors their manager, that's why Liverpool are high energy and work hard always, since Klopp who is positively aggressive and energetic always on watch on his toes ensuring they are carrying out his instructions. He doesn't miss a beat.

In comparison, we have ole with his legs crossed, laid back in his chair or leaning forward with the obligatory chin stroking theatrics, feigning deep thought, whilst looking lethargic and obviously our team end up looking limp wristed, lost, lethargic, insipid and uninspired and end up getting bullied on the field by the majority of physical stronger willed teams.

This guy doesn't have the character to be leading/managing this team. He's too nice and too easy to please, that's why the players love him. The type of coach to give a thumbs up and a wide smile after a player completes a basic pass in training

He's more suited to managing a under 12 years 5 a side team, where constant positive reinforcement has it's place

I think it was Evra who said he recently walked into carrington and was shocked how over indulged and pampered the players were.I wouldn't be surprised if Ole carrys some of these players bags back to their cars after training for them and get him to wash and message their feet at half time.

This reminds me of Steve Bould and Arsenal. An ex player who is just there. They used to say Wenger used to refuse Bould to have any impact on the defense in case he improves it and take credit from Wenger. Maybe Ole is refusing to help the midfielders in case he improves them and make him look bad? Or maybe he is just an ex player who is just there

I would love to have someone going batshit on the touchline when We're struggling, be it Carrick, Ole, Phelan, McKenna but They all seem to sulk when things don't work out. Maybe They just have no idea what else to do.

Wasn't that a major criticism of Van gaal that he just sat on the bench most of the games . Then the one time Giggs got fed up and went to the touchline cost a sensation

Yes. But at least you knew He's crazy so He might have scold the players in the dressing room. He was sitting but He had twitched his ass. With Ole, I could only imagine a few pats on the back and nice words like 'We could have done better'.

Looking disintrested and confused as usual.

If hes got nothing to offer on match day then why is he there?

Much like lingard is a waste of a player spot, Carrick is a Waste of bench space. Get someone in that can coach or offer assistance.

Got a coaching job based on his playing career without showing anything to deserve that big job. Sounds familiar?
