What do we still need? Post Summer 2017 edition

Our outgoings will be big I think with Carrick, Ibra, Shaw, Darmian, Blind, Fellaini, Jones and Perreira all leaving which should get us in the region of £80-120m.

The positions we need are CM (argubably 2), LB, RB, and possibly an attacking player.

I'd say promote TFM to back-up RB to compete with Valencia. He will get plenty of games there, and he's only playing RB out on loan anyway so not like we would be playing him out of position. He can also provide cover for CB. I would loan out Axel again to the Championship or a lower Prem team with a clause that he must start when fit like Fergie used to insist with certain players.

Jorginho and SMS would be quality CM additions but can't see us paying over £150m for two CM's if rumours regarding prices are correct.

LB we should go all out for Alex Sandro and use Darmian as part of the deal.

I would try for Griezmann or Fekir for the attacking position.

I would say, in order of importance:

1 RB
2 CM
1 LB
1 RW

In order.
LB-Sandro £50m
CM-Jorginho £40m
RB-Cedric £25m
RW-Mahrez £60m
  • We dont necessarily need a CB, unless we don't sign an RB.
  • We need an experienced worldclass LB.
  • We need a midfielder that can pick passes from midfield, not another giant.
  • We need a RB that is not scared to contribute in attack.
  • We need a RW, unless Jose decides to play Alexis there.

I feel like a broken record now saying that I've only seen a player on YouTube but again it's the case apart from against man city in the champions league with Fred.
But have ye seen him? He looks absolutely quality and exactly what we need. He reminds me of Kante with more skills (YouTube though)
If we could get him for 40m it would be a steal. He looks like a good tackler and very mobile. Perfect for the right side of a midfield 3. Seriously, hope we beat city to him.

In order of importance I'd say we need:
LB
RB
CM
RW
CB

Realistically, and from joses most recent transfer comments, I'd say we will only get a LB, CM and CB , maybe another midfielder.
Really think the two fullbacks and midfielder are essential though.
And RW is pretty important too since Sanchez isn't playing there.

I think we still have money from last season where we don't want to slash out money on perisic but we could use that money for this summer transfer window. Regardless of Jose's extension contract, it looks like that United Board is willing to back Jose fully in transfers window but a net 200m+ budget is possible for Jose to spend on top two CM, fullbacks and use money from the sales of player such as the like of Blind, Darmin, Shaw to spend on first starter CB like Varane and Umitti. I think Jose is eyeing Chong for RW who is too good for the United U23 and U18, Chong and Mata for RW rotation.

We need a new manager first and foremost. We can have Messi in our team and still he'd be lining up as an auxillary fullback in the setup.

Sanchez, Pogba are all looking half the players under his management, what's the guarantee that anymore shiny new objects will be successful here?

Same school of man management as Jose I see. :p

Oh yeah good call. Forgot chong, he definitely could get a few games next season. But might still be a bit short there. I'd like to see Sanchez tried there.

Can you elaborate how exactly that works?

Carrick, Ibra, Fellaini are leaving for free. Shaw, Blind, Jones, Darmian all have just one year contract left, no? Are you expecting to get ~50m pounds sterling for Andreas Pereira?

Edit. Pereira also has contract until 2019

Phil Jones and Pereira an option to extend till 2020(club's discretion)

Shaw - 15-20m
Blind - 10m
Jones - 25-30m
Darmian 10m
Pereira - 7-10m

Comes out around 80m or so.

Next time get your facts right before posting like a smartass.

The average player will cost 30m+ and a very defensively good player will cost 50m+ nowadays in the transfer window, I'd expect to see Shaw sold for 25-30m, Blind 20m, Jones 30m, Darmain 20m and Pereira for 10m.

If you get less than 80m for those, will you apologize to me for the insult?

There was no insult. You were being patronizing to the poster whilst getting the facts wrong for yourself.

I have a feeling Pogba and/or Martial will be gone in the summer. Why do I think so? Jose has a history of selling players that want out. If they want to leave, he will sell them. I can't claim to know for a fact but I get the sense that those two don't want to hang around if they are not consistent starters and the darlings of their team mates, media, fans and manager. Also, when rumours get to a point in football, I usually start thinking there might be a little bit of truth hidden in them. I am starting to wonder about the recent Barca / Madrid interests in Pogba, his nice statements about Messi and Jose's openness to trading him off. Well, they could all be rubbish media speculations though

But assuming one or both of them are going, the bad news here is that we know Pogba and Martial are very talented so will be gutted to see them (or either of them ) leave. The good news is that Jose often trades well in the transfer market and when he sells star players, he often gets good replacements who can run through wells for him and the team (Zlatan for Etoo; William Gallas for Ashley Cole; Miki for Alexis; etc.). He also often gets replacements that give his team's better balance them with the previous players.

Well, maybe I am wrong on this but whatever the case, Summer is shaping up to be very interesting. We might just be having a whole new team post Moyes/ LVG by the time the window closes.

We need a RB LB CB and 2 Midfielders. We also need a RW, but Unless we get rid of a lot of players I can only see about 4 coming in.

Right winger is the top priority - quite how we have so many attacking players but no one particularly keen to play there is bizarre. Mahrez would be ideal in my view.

I’d then look to bring in at least one, possibly two, centre midfielders. If we could get Wilshere on a free that would be the perfect signing for us and leave funds for another b2b CM.

Finally, I want a top class LB. I don’t see anyone in the premier league who would be an obvious improvement so would need to be someone like Alex Sandro. I wouldn’t be too disappointed if we went for Tierney though if it left us more money to spend on the above.

Would also like to get Sessegnon signed up even if only to loan him back out for another season.

it's hard to predict who we need when we don't even have a clear plan as how we will lineup

I don't see us signing a Dybala or Griezmann style player unless we go 4-2-3-1

Pogba hasn't really shown that he can play in that role as a 2 and he's lacked discipline at times

maybe we will just bring in players that offer tactical flexibility between 4-3-3 or 3-4-3

what we do know is that we need two fullbacks and an upgrade on one of our CBs

our squad is thin in midfield and with us losing Carrick and Fellaini we will maybe sign 2 including a playmaker

RW is an obvious area of improvement and to add someone special there would be fantastic, adding great balance to the team

With the likes of De Gea, Bailly, Jones, Pogba, Matic, Martial, Rashford, Sanchez and Lukaku we have the spine of a really fecking good team. I'd prefer we get the best out of them and not spend another quarter billion. Obviously full backs are our biggest weakness and will need to be upgraded on both flanks. A centre mid to compliment Pog and Matic also feels crucial and then a proper right winger to replace Mata. All doable with around 100 million net spend assuming we off load a few (Shaw, smalling, herrera?).

It actually does sound like you want to spend another quarter billion.

Two fullbacks are absolutely essential. I really do think this will help an enormous amount because our wide players on both sides like to come inside. If we had two full backs consistently flying past them on the outside it opens up more spaces and we get more crosses into the box for Lukaku

We also need a CM in the mound of Kante. Not just a destroyer but someone who can pass forwards as well. McTominay looks decent but the fact he has started so many games highlights we’re weak in this area.

After that I would be reasonably happy but if we could add a world class CB that would be great

Two new fullbacks who can help us build play. CM to replace Fellaini/Carrick. Maybe a RW & CB.

I see we are back to 'we need this if we want to win the league' 8 man 500m overhauls with 6 21 year old unproven prospects
well there are clear signings needed when you are losing Ibra, Carrick, Fellaini for starters. Shaw, Blind and Darmian can't get a game and your first choice fullbacks are as old and replaceable as Young and Valencia.

Maybe another manager could get more out of some of the squad players but it feels like Jose has washed his hands of a few

Fully agree with that. A left and right back that can bombard forward and provide width when attacking will massively improve our offensive play. We just have to look at the difference they make to both City and Spurs teams to see how important they are. Especially given that our wingers pretty much all exclusively want to cut inside. Buying offensively strong full backs will also lessen our need for an out and out right winger.
If we were to buy just one CM, I'd prefer a box to box midfielder with a good technical ability and a solid passing range. Pretty hard to find a quality player that fits that bill and is available. If we were to sell say Blind and Smalling, we could do with a top CB that can partner Bailly. Preferably a ball playing CB that can comfortably pass from the back. Full backs, midfield and then centre back, in that order of priority.

if 3 players aren't getting a game im not sure it means we need 3 more players, more likely means we have a manager take uses a small number of players

I think that a smaller quicker cm is more important than fullbacks. All our options for cm at the moment are basketball players really. No one that can make our football faster overall. I think that makes our other players look worse than they really are. I think our football has looked slow and laboured ever since Scholes legs gave up.

that's certainly true of Mourinho..... still it's obvious we need to address issues such as aging and ineffective fullbacks, reliance on Matic, a lack of quality and balance in parts of the first team etc

be nice to see Tuanzebe, Fosu Mensah and one or two others fill the squad places more actively but we do need quality

I just spent 30 minutes constructing a huge ass post which ultimately had a rather simplistic underlining point...

Whoever we sign this summer we need to ensure is the right fit long term, Zlatan and Mkhitaryan we're both good in their first season at the club but ultimately 12 months later both are gone. Our midfield signing this summer is it someone who will compliment Matic and Pogba or in 12 months time will it actually have been someone who's replaced one of them?

Its surely not a positive thing that despite signing 8 players (albeit only 6 are still at the club) that only half the outfield players in the starting XI today are those who Mourinho signed himself...

From today's line up I would say the ones that need to be replaced or the ones that shouldn't be starting for us next season are four players - Valencia, Smalling, Young and Mata. So that's a RB, LB, CB and RW needed along with one maybe two midfielders to complete the squad. Perhaps all that won't get done this summer alone but our squad isn't complete until we strengthen in these areas.

Mourinho likes tried and tested and will absolutely want 1st place next year, honestly see him bringing in Bale and Vidal.

Ill happily buy any defender that when having the ball doesn't shit himself when a player comes within 10 metres of him

Mata? We look like a proper team whenever he plays, when he doesn't we struggle to create anything

Mata does seem to be the glue but he can also go missing in certain games. Would like to get a improved version of Mata. Eriksen would be a huge upgrade but he would cost a 100m easily. Douglas Costa would be a decent acquisition. Really hope we aren't in for Bale.

Get 2 cm then consider a 3rd.

Review the full back position, if Shaw goes we need a ready made lb and a young RB.

Consider a cb if there is someone available but not a top priority.

In the second half today it was clear how much we miss a proper midfield controller when things got raggedy and we lost the tempo, this is where Carrick and Scholes used to stop us going off the boil and getting complacent just because we were ahead in a match.

Well in fairness every player Mourinho has bought who is still at the club was on the pitch today bar Bailly, and he was only missing because of fatigue from International duty.

1) 2 Midfielders (1 if Mourinho decides that Pereira deserves a shoutout) - Carrick, Fellaini, and Herrera likely all gone.
2) LB - Shaw's done. Young's had a great season but not long term
3) RW - Outside of Mata we have nobody and he may or may not be gone in the summer
4) RB - Long term answer is needed. Of course TFM should have a shoutout but who knows.
5) CB - Would be higher priority but I honestly think Jose likes Smalling for whatever reason so we won't prioritize it.

Wildcard - If Martial leaves I can see us going after another offensive player

Sorry mentioned this in the fullbacks thread to.

Ryan Bertrand.
Seems as though Southampton may drop out of the league.....

By no means a world beater but Bertrand would be a decent signing knows the league and come at decent price in today’s market. Could possibly send Shaw back on loan for year!
