What do we still need? Aka The never ending story

Would it be impossible to sign Son? Watched him vs Colombia and he never fails to impress me, although he needs to pass it a bit more.
I would love this and would be willing to pay a crazy amount, but I don't think it is a possibility.

Especially if Spurs get Champions League and we don't. But even if that is reversed, I don't see Spurs wanting to sell to us.

Massive is right. Need to drop £250m+

We need to strengthen with some top players. The positions I would add are:

- A quality center back (~60m)
- A back-up Left back (or a starting right back if Dalot is not deemed good enough to start next season) (~20m)
- A quality holding midfielder or central midfielder with good passing range. (~50m)
- A quality player who can play on the right side of the attack. (~80m)
- A versatile attacker who can play across the front line. (Wouldn't mind some one like Brooks) (~30m)

I feel we should always have top British players in our squad. Sancho & Brooks would be awesome; both have top potential. How good is Rice? Haven't seen much of him, but we should get him if he is good with the potential to get to the top. Can be an option at both DM & CB.

Generate money/free up with the wages by getting rid of:

- Bailly
- Rojo
- Darmian
- Sanchez
- Pereira
- Valencia
- Mata
- Fosu-Mensah
- Wilson

City did 6 in Pep's year 2 by spending 260 net. After our savings last year and the leverage of Pogba and De Gea, I say we just whip it out and put it right on the table by bringing in 6-8 new players. Why not?

Edit: And it's too much in midfield right now. Rabiot or Ndombele. Prefer Ndombele but if it was Rabiot, then the board would have accomplished an incredible window from a value perspective considering net spend.

£250m is nearly enough though.

That's Sancho and a top CB.

Which would be a great start but we need another attacker and a CM at the absolute minimum.

Agreed, but that’s why I think a deal that gets us 3 players from Real, in exchange for Pogba and De Gea is a way to save a ton of money.

What if:

- Pogba and De Gea could get their moves to Madrid and we could get back Courtois, Bale and Varane? Mind you, I wouldn't want anything to do with them if they were only coming reluctantly like Di Maria. But I just like the certainty of getting players back for them, as opposed to a chunk of cash, which leads to inflated transfer fees on top of our already inflated fees.
- Rabiot AND Rakitic (probably end up with both of them for no more than 40M) AND Neves/Ndombele (~50M). Lose Pogba and yet the technical ability of our midfield goes up several levels right away. Still have Herrera, Matic, Fred, etc. for outstanding depth.
- Sancho (there's our push for young English talent)
- Meunier (relatively cheap. RB is sorted for years)

Courtois
Meunier - Varane - Lindelof - Shaw
Ndombele - Herrera - Rabiot
Bale - Lukaku - Rashford

Subs: Sancho, Martial, Dalot, Smalling, Neves, Rakitic, Romero
I don't care how crazy that all sounds (and yes I know nothing like this is likely to happen), but I feel it's the type of team we need to really challenge. And I feel it could actually be achieved for under 200M after player sales. With Pogba, De Gea and Sanchez off the books, we could reset our wage structure again also.

Yeah....that's not happening.

Courtois and Bale? One is a cnut and the other is busted flush. I hope we steer clear.

£250m is nearly enough though.

Which would be a great start but we need another attacker and a CM at the absolute minimum.

I don't think any CB is worth over a £100m and neither is Sancho. £60m-£70m max for a CB & £80m-£90m max for Sancho. That'll leave enough room for a couple other signings. Won't mind if we pick up a player or two on cheap. What is the point of a scouting department if we only make obvious signings.

What we need is a team with the fitness and athleticism to play the high pressing game Ole demands.

There will be no more slow, injury-prone, unfit luxury players in the team.

United's players will probably go through their toughest pre-season in a long time as Ole looks to sharpen them. And avoid some of the injuries which have occurred this season from increasing the pace and distance covered based on Ole's demands.

Youth team players will definitely get their chance because of the energy they can bring in.

Back to the thread, clearly the emphasis will be on bringing in younger players.

Sancho and a run-all-day midfielder is a must, even if we manage to keep Herrera.

Doubt we will be buying a CB this summer even though we clearly should be. The options are just too few, the prices will be crazy & we have other areas that need additions.

To improve our build-up play without bringing in new CBs we need experienced, confident on the ball FBs on both sides.

Out: Rojo, Valencia, Darmian, TFM
In: B. Sarr + either Telles or F. Mendy

Defence : Telles - Lindelof - Smalling - Sarr
Bench: Shaw - Jones - Bailly - Dalot
Back-ups: Young, Laird, Tuanzebe

We need bite in midfield. Someone not easily dribbled past. Can tackle & intercept a fair bit. A player who turns & distributes forward quickly. (Fred lacks discipline to play here imo)

Out - Fellaini, Pereira
In - Rabiot + Rodrigo

Central Midfield: Rabiot - Rodrigo
Bench: Matic - McT
Back-ups: Garner

The average positions pic showed us that no one is mirroring what Pogba does on his side of the pitch. We need a right-sided creative midfielder that attacks the half-space dangerzone. With some defensive contribution ooccasionally. This player relieves the pressure on Pogba to create & takes away some defenders too.

Out - Herrera, Mata
In - Either Fernandes or Ziyech

Attacking Midfield: Pogba - Fernandes
Bench: Lingard - Fred
Back-ups: Gomes, Chong

And that's it.

Telles (€45m), Sarr (€25m), Rabiot (€0m), Rodrigo (€100m - release clause) & Fernandes (€50m) = €220m

4-2-2-2

Martial - Lukaku
(sub: Rashford, Sanchez)

Pogba - Fernandes
(subs: Lingard, Fred)

Rabiot - Rodrigo
(subs: Matic, McT)

Telles - VNL - Mike - Sarr
(subs: Shaw, Bailly, Jones, Dalot, Young)

Of course all this is assuming DDG, Rashford & Pogba stay & no suitable offers for Sanchez, Bailly, Jones, Matic & Lukaku.

Younger, better and with a lot saved on wages. Summer 2020 we buy a new RB and maybe a CM.

Hilarious to think Sancho will be pried away from Dortmund for less than Dembele cost.

Do you realise it's a near identical situation?

Sancho and Dembele both have had one season at Dortmund. However, so far Sancho's stats are actually slightly better.

£140m is the precedent. It will not be a penny less.

I can't believe with these obvious facts that this is even discussed.

It's 2019 mate.

Calm down with this.

Bayern just paid £68m for a left back.

Don't tell me a top CB will not go for £100m in 2019.

Would spending 100m on CB make us play like adding a 100m player in today's game?

Honestly believe we need at least half a dozen quality players before we have any hope of winning the league and CL. Whether people want to accept it or not the fact is we have a lot of mediocre players in our squad.

For all the obssession over CB's and Sancho I think today again showed we need a DM, RB and a creative player for the tip of the diamond first and foremost.

If we want to fix every problem in the squad we’d need a CB, RB, DM, creative CM and a RW.

Realistically this summer I think a RB and RW are possible. I’m not sure we’ll go for a DM with Garner coming up from the youth team. Solskjaer saying he could be the new Carrick is high praise.

I’m also not convinced we’ll go all out for a CB unless they are unquestionably world class.

The only way I see us moving for a creative midfielder is if Pogba/Herrera leaves.

So really I think we’ll have at least two first team signings but even RB one could argue Dalot should have the chance to make that position his own. The only gaping hole we have is RW where nobody at academy level or currently in the squad appears able to take up that role and make it their own. So for me the priority has to be Sancho or someone of that ilk.

Ole is a lot smarter than people think in the transfer market and he's red through and through, little gestures like consoling Calum Hudson Odoi after we beat them in the cup. This is his dream job and like Sir Alex, class of 92 and Mike Phelan they have all been looking from a far thinking how to resolve the issues at the club;
  • Too many Foreign Mercenaries
  • Team is aging and not mobile enough
  • The Wage bill is not reflective of the teams success on the field
  • The Team no longer has that central core of British players of 6 or 7 players that understand what Manchester United represents
  • Lacks genuine leadership
  • Lacks Midfield creativity
  • lacks genuine width and trickery
  • Squad is imbalanced Age, Position
Now Ole can not resolve all those issues within 1 transfer window but all this nonsense about only signing 2 players is simply that, he knew what he would want if he got the job which is why Feillani was moved on straight away. We can make as many lists as we all want but spending money doesn't always guarantee success!

Firstly he will identify all the players that must be kept, De Gea, Herrera and Marcus and hopefully resign them all on new contracts next he will sell or release the players who offer very little to the team on matchday or are now in a serious state of decline like Sanchez, Mata, Darmian, Rojo, Valencia, Baily (African Cup of Nations and to injury proun, we have Jones and can not afford another!)

That would mean that with Feillani leaving we would have lost 7 first team players. Two of these can be replaced by Youth rotation of which is Timothy Fosu Mensah, S McTominay, M Greenwood, E Laird, T Chong and Angel Gomez. The other 5 are obvious new positions to fill this window; Elite CB, FB/WB, CDM, RWS, No 10/Marquee.

If we have to buy 4 or 5 players and only have £250M with player Sales then it's clear thar Ole will be looking at Value, Character, Age and more importantly they understand the size and responsibility of playing for the Club.
So although listed below may be most fans wish list, it is highly unlikely to happen.
Koulibaly -120M, J Sancho 90M, W Bissaka 35M, M Veratti or C Ericssen 90M, P Dyballa P Coutinho 110M, it's just not going to happen!

More likely is a transfer window finishing something like this; T Audeirweld or K Manolas 25M, W Bissaka or T Meunier £35M, H Lozano, C Hudson or W Zaha £45M, A Rabiot Free and P Dyballa or A Griezmann £110M.
One of the latter 2 will be a marquee signing made simply to keep Pogba happy and stop him joing Madrid.

In turth, I think we need 5 or 6 starters if no one good leaves. Since that is impossible to do we must buy 4 starters imo.

Only a RB and a RW and we will be fighting for 4th next season!

Would say we need a minimum of RB,CB,CM,DM,RW. Yes I realise that is probably unrealistic expectations but that is my opinion

Buy Zaha for RF or RW, then you can play either 433 or 442 with Martial and Rasford as striker and Zaha as RW. He may be cheaper than Sancho which BVB said he won't be on the market this summer.

Absolutely no to this. No half measures any more. Either we buy world class players or the very best prospects. This club needs to get it right from now on. Ole’s first summer transfer window will be crucial.

Zaha is a good player on his day, but not good enough for Manchester United.

Given a budget of 250m this is my shout of how best to use it.

Alderweireld 25m
Sancho - 100m
Rice - 70m
Fekir -55m

----------------------DDG------------------------
Dalot------Alderweireld---Lindelof-------Shaw-
-----------------Rice-----Pogba------------------
---------------------Fekir-------------------------
Sancho-------------Rashford-------------Martial

This would require Pogba to drop deeper like how he played for France in the World Cup. He can still be effective with his passing ability with the pace of our young trio up front and can join in attacks late when we're in possesion. Fekir would add a level of creativity that our midfield is lacking and also the ability to take the ball in tight spaces and dribble out of trouble releasing our forwards, he also has an eye for goal.

Alderweireld would be a no brainer at a great price, one of the best CB's in the league.

Rice is excellent at shielding the back four and has a decent passing range, a player I think who we could get 10 years out of. He won't come cheap but he is a risk worth taking imo.

Sancho is an obvious talent, his assist record in the Bundesliga is incredible for such a young player. His movement off the ball and choice of pass is exceptional for one so young. We will regret it if we don't sign him, again it's a risk for a player so young but it has the potential to look a snip in a few years.

Again a lot of this is predicated on Pogba playing a more withdrawn role and picking his moments to join in the attack, that would be crucial for this team not to get overrun. With that midfield 3 we could start controlling the midfield again, no more of Watford coming and outplaying us in there. It has a bit of everything.

Zaha is a good player on his day, but not good enough for Manchester United.

Though I understand your frustration but do not necessary agree with it. Building a squad is much more complex than just going out and buying world class players/prospects for each position.

Being world class doesn't necessary means success at a club eg Falcao, Di Maria, Veron, Sanchez etc. Also a player successful for a certain club doesnt mean he would do the same at Manutd i.e. Mikhitaryan, Kagawa, Sanchez etc.

At the same time we have seen recently Liverpool build a squad with good hardworking players who were not necessarily termed world class before their move eg Salah, Mane, Van Dijk, Robertson. Also during SAF days we saw such signings eg Vidic, Carrick, Evra.

What United should be looking at are good players but with the right profile and background.

I wasn’t saying I’d be happy about that prospect but I don’t see us making the 4-6 changes we need. I think if we don’t make champions league we’ll come up short.

This is pretty much my list and in the same order.

CB
RB
CM
RW
FW

CB & RB - we can't challenge next season without a new CB and a new RB. We need to be able to bring the ball out from the back and avoid sitting deeper and deeper as the game goes on. De Ligt has to be top of everyone's wishlist. Dalot might take the RB spot and save us a purchase there, he's certainly looked promising.

CM - next we need to address Matic's replacement. Matic is 31 and getting slower by the game and now Herrera might be leaving. We don't need to spend hugely but we need a top prospect to fill their boots. And we need to Herrera to commit.

RW - We have lacked a right flank for years. I'd love to see us buy Sancho here, although if we do sort the RB spot fixing the RW position becomes a little less important.

FW - The final area is the attack. It's not massively problematic as if the rest of the team is functioning we do have goals in us. Lukaku might be a bit of a square peg in a round hole but it's not an urgent position to fix.

In turth, I think we need 5 or 6 starters if no one good leaves. Since that is impossible to do we must buy 4 starters imo.
Even if we are buying just 3 players, they have to be starters, no average players or players who might make the step up
If we are buying young players, we must buy only the very best like De Ligt or Sancho
Except DDG, Shaw, Lindelof, Pogba and one of Martial / Rash we can improve on all other positions.
If we have just 200 mill to spend, I would rather we buy Koulibaly and Sancho rather than Zaha, Rice, Anderson and Bissaka. Considering we spend just a net of 30-40 mill last summer, we should be having 250-300 mill this year before sales.
I really hope we go for top quality

Good analysis, however I am not convinced about your reasoning regarding the unlikelihood versus the likelihood of some of the transfers happening.

Wouldn't expect a transfer happening for AG7 or Dybala at all, let alone in addition to a winger transfer like Zaha, CHO or Lozano.

It's just probabilities in the end though. For all we know, Ed could pull off four proper signings this summer as he did for José's first season. I just hope that the 2019 vintage is a far younger lot in average than the one from José's years.

CDM: Rabiot free
CDM: Sensi £20m (Contract ends 2020)
CM/RW/LW: Brandt £22m clause
CM/CAM: Pellegrini £22m clause
CM: Barella £45m (What Sampdoria as stated as his sellingprice)
RW/LW/CAM: Zaniolo £50m
RW/LW/CAM: Sarabia £15m clause
ST: Luka Jovic £40m
Total: £304m.
Net spend: £204m

1.Team(2. team) 433:
DDG (Romero)
Meunier (Dalot) - Lindelof (Smalling) - de Ligt (Tuanzebe) - Shaw (Young)
Barella(Brand) - Rabiot (Sensi) - Pogba (Pellegrini)
Zaniolo(Lingard) - Rashford (Jovic) - Martial (Sarabia)
With Laird and Greenwood as additional players.

Wagecost would not be increased, within the homegrown rules.
Young, but experienced squad capable to get top 4 with some margin the first season.
The 2. team should be able to beat most teams in the EPL, and would fight for top 6 on its own.
The mixture of players in the squad should make the team able to play in different types of systems, either it be possession oriented, high press aggressive, low block counterattacking etc.
Midfield is more technical and "balanced", with players that are capable and got time to develope.
Attack is a mixture of end product players like Rashford, Martial and Jovic, and creators like Sarabia and Zaniolo and utility in Lingard.

Summer 2020:
Sancho, Tierney and a CB in.
Young Retiring, sell the players that are clearly not adapting.

Rb: Meunier £25
Cb: Alderweireld £25
Cm: Neves £50
