Westminster Politics

Would have been nice if they'd interrupted their enemy before they made this particular mistake. Which was kind of, you know, their job?

You referring to the referendum or subsequent Tory actions?

If the latter they had no control and so have taken the tactical decision to push only on winnable positions (EU citizens rights). Even the PLP have come to terms with it working during the election.

Good news, the magic money tree is back. Turns out you just need to believe there might be a talking snake in it, telling you how good the apples are.

Is it a big surprise? This is the party that said there was no money left, live within our means, difficult decisions etc, yet when Thatcher died and there was an uproar when it turned out that £10 million of taxpayer's money was going to be spent on her funeral the only response we got was a curt "We can afford it". There's no money, unless you're a mate.

Next time young people are told you can't just get free education as we all have to live within our means, the Tories can explain why their cling-to-power fund does not extend to them.

So that's where the 350m a week will go to

Thundercnuts. Should be uproar about this. Bunch of arse holes!
Don't worry, the media figures who repeated the 'magic money tree' line like they were a hospital radio DJ who just spent £50 on some new jingles, will definitely bring this deal up when they propose spending cuts and the importance of living within our means. Definitely, definitely.

Oh for sure, I imagine it will be font size 50 across all of the newspapers front pages tomorrow... (sarcasm).

Its a good thing the tories haven't just spent all of their campaign warning about coalitions and deals to prop up a minority goverment.

I expect there'll be controversy when the DUP decide they don't want to lynch the gays on a Sunday, as according to the deal, because that's their day of worship.

If this doesn't get rightly criticized and ridiculed by the media, then I think it's fair to start throwing the B-word around. As someone mentioned above, they dedicated a large part of their campaign to fear mongering a coalition of chaos, which they themselves have now created.

Look forward to the extra money going to Scotland and Wales too, and the happiness that will bring to working-class English voters.

As I'm Northern Irish, I'm obviously encouraged by any further investment in our backwater economy. Can't say it's particularly fair on the rest of the UK, nor (on paper) does it seem right to buy yourself a government like they have.

For context, I have no love for the DUP and would never vote for them (bar issues on partition). But more money for this place isn't to be sniffed at. Thankfully (as expected), they've left their social policies for back at home for us to put up with.

Enjoy your hover buses and bullet trains.

Mate, the rumour is every household is being given a wood pellet boiler and told to just 'fecking go for it'. We'll be rich like the Saudi's in 2 years time - with the same social policies to match.

I use the York St Interchange every day so getting that sorted will literally make my life in the mornings a little bit better but if I were from the rest of the UK I'd be absolutely furious. Leaving the rights and wrongs of NI getting this extra money aside the fact that the DUP have, by themselves, been allowed to decide where to allocate this extra funding without any input from the rest of the parties here is in itself a bit of a circumvention of the Good Friday Agreement surely? I'm from the North West originally so whereas I'll be happy with the York Street junction getting sorted in Belfast if the A5 doesn't get it's long over due upgrade out of this and other projects west of the Bann it will start to look like the DUP are shamelessly pouring money into their own constituencies. Devil will be in the details I suppose.

It would be completely out of order to allow one party to control all that money. The problem we have currently is we don't even have an Assembley to agree these things anyway.

True but the funding is also contingent on getting the Assembly up and running again so it'll be interesting to see which parties take which departments if/when they get their acts together. Sinn Fein had health, finance and infrastructure last time round which is where most of the new money will go so it'll be interesting how it shapes up.

There's always the possibility though that Sinn Fein will refuse to cooperate for as long as the DUP have this influence over UK government. It's an understandable argument too; the government is supposed to be impartial and neutral in dealing with the current Stormont crisis, but it inherently cannot be when it is literally relying on one of the major Northern Irish parties to remain in government.

Yeah I can imagine that would be their initial reaction to this deal but they'll get hammered for being seen to be standing in the way of this additional funding just like when they took a stand against the bedroom tax and refused to pass the budget resulting in fines from the treasury. If the DUP give them any reason to claim the money is being poured into Unionist areas rather than on a cross community basis then that'll be their raison d'etre for refusing to go back into government with them. The DUP have been noticeably softening their stance against the Irish language act too though so there is scope here to let both parties come away with a win.

There are a lot of people in rural areas in England that would kill for investment in Broadband. Or decent accommodation.

it would actually be funny if it weren't so sad. I just think of that nurse on Question Time who asked about pay rises since she hasn't had one for 8 years and the answer May gave her about there being no magical money tree was so rude and condescending and spoken with real disdain.

He's a bit dilusional.

Also.. he's going to upset a lot of his electorate who work in the factories that are reliant upon Trident.

Will probably lower the voting age to compensate.

Wasn't labours official line to stick with it?

Yeah. He's personally for nuclear disablement though, so he may be under some kind of illusion that he can force through his own will and it will fly with his party and his constituents because he's currently flying high. Those in Barrow and the Clyde will not be happy when their main source of income is gone. He has said that he will replace the work with other work but who can guarantee that will happen. I think it's very admirable to stick to your guns on personal issues but they have to be put aside if the rest of your party dont agree. Parliament voted 472-117 in favour of renewing Trident last year, with 140 labour MPs voting against the will of him. He's in dreamland if he believes that he will be able to scrap Trident under those circumstances. Also, it's already had the vote. We cant just keep having vote after vote until we achieve the favourable result.
