Westminster Politics 2024-2029

As a genuine question - they seem really bad at these things. Why? Starmer has spoken to Blair and others before the election. How did they not get advice on donations and freebies, especially as they were so critical of Tory cronyism?

Now there are stories of Simon Case being forced out and replaced, with him being blamed for the leaks. Sue Grey works for them yet they appear like a bunch of amateurs.
Honestly I’m just as puzzled about why they are so shite and amateurish.

I sort of go back to fact this is the same fraction group which lost twice to Corbyn for the labour leadership. At first they tried to increase membership fees to put off poor people and then the second time they backed Owen Smith ice cream van. It only worked the third time because they lied and ran on a left wing platform they didn’t believe in.

Even Blair this month was talking negative shite about how “we’ve swapped out usually single people coming from Europe for families from Asia and Africa”. This isn’t the same politician from the late 90’s.

For Starmer Labour it’s been politics on easy mode. Years and years of getting away with lying and holding contradictory positions probably installs a insane level of arrogance.

Also the freebies/brides might be a very Starmer thing. The guy seemingly has a history of it even before becoming a MP.

Imo overall it fits a pattern of deteriorating liberal politics in the west.

No woman with even a moderate media profile has ever worn her own clothes to London fashion week.

There's plenty to criticise Labour on already, but don't think this is the gotcha Burley thinks it is.

Borrowing clothes is pretty standard but I do Burley has a point on the timing. Also why the feck is Starmer wife going to London fashion week.

I would imagine as wife of the PM it would be considered supporting British industry

You have to remember, 10 years ago starmer was not even a member of a political party.

He joined labour in 2015 and became a candidate immediately.

Within 8 months of becoming an MP he was taking part in the resignations to try and force corbyn out, 6 months after he won the leadership election.

Because they were attacking the left, every media outlet in the country supported them. Since then, until 2019 starmer and his people have been on easy mode. No matter how stupid the thinsg they said, because they were attcking corbyn, the media supported them. The observer just published an article explaining that they planted stories to make sure corbyn wouldn't win an election. And they got backed by the media every step of the way.

In the run up to this election, the tories have been such a shiteshow, everyone just wanted a change., starmer had no scrutiny, the opposite in fact.

He's so bad at it now because this si the first time in his entire political life that the media have pushed back, even gently, on what he is up to.

i can't believe Ed Davey came on stage at conference singing "Take a Chance on Me" by Abba!

Good speech though.

Well said. I didn’t even know that he wasn’t a member of any political party up until 2015, that’s news to me.

She should stay in and stare at the walls, grateful she has a roof over her head.
Probably a improvement over listening to Starmer drone on.
Tbf I don't really see an issue with attending stuff. It's not really any different to attending a football match or gig etc.

I wouldn't do it, but I am sure I'd you are into fashion it's a hoot
If she wants to attend a fashion show then she can pay for it. Same with Starmer and his addiction to freebie Arsenal tickets.

Starmer is on a wage of over £100,000.

It's an invite only event, you don't buy tickets for the main shows. I really don't get your beef with the UK's first lady attending the national fashion show. Michelle Obama and every other leader's spouse attends national events.

What a depressing interview. Yet another wind up automaton. Real demonstration of integrity.

The beef is desperation. She wore borrowed clothes and attended an event that is designed to showcase British industry.

Maybe he wasn't allowed to be, since he was the Director of Public Prosecutions?

That's part of it, he was DPP till the end of 2013 and I would doubt he could be a member of a prty in that position.

He was very clearly fast tracked into Labour after that though, people tried to nominate him for leader in the contest corbyn won, he'd been an MP for 3 months at that point.

The less this country copies American politics the better. I get the PM or party leaders having to do doing these events but for anyone else it’s stupid and meaningless nonsense imo.

Victoria Starmer is a middle manager in the NHS. She doesn’t know anything about fashion and the extra security needed so she can have fun in the bathrooms is a waste of tax payers money especially in this economy.

:lol:First lady isn't a phrase I'd advocate, but PM's wife doesn't transfer well to the international stage.

So as a middle manager in the NHS can she attend any event, even with, or should she know her place and stick to meetings about nurse rosters and paperclips?
Most of the guests there know feck all about fashion, but they wear clothes well, generate publicity and media coverage.

She should act like most middle managers eg Keep a stiff upper lip while privatising the national health service and also feel a deep sense of unspeakable shame!

I’m just at the extreme end. If it was up to me MP’s would be on the lowest wage possible and their second homes would be a sleeping bag and whatever free space they could find around Westminster for night.

The Children Of Men dystopia of banning smoking and legalising suicide is going to happen.

With the winter fuel allowance and this, Starmer clearly has a policy of ‘kill all old people’. Something I have argued for for a long time

And faux outrage in some places!

And yet we have people in this very thread not only defending him, but genuinely thinking he's somehow going to improve things for ordinary people in this country. fecking wild

Would you still prefer the Tories? If not then he's already made an improvement

Do you need to engage with those people to find out why or how? It’s all public information.
Starmer - "So how do you let people die when they are simply trying to flee persecution?'

Italian Politician (can't be arsed searching) - "Flapada flapada Costacurta just be a massive cnut innit."

Starmer - "Very interesting... Can I take this coffee table home with me?"

It’s a rare position given Labour are currently polling at around 29%.

I think it’s people trying to cling onto some hope. It’s like the iconic fight scene from They Live. Crazy for Frank Armitage to refuse to put on the cool 80’s shades but in doing so it will break a lot of his illusions and he knows this.

For some accepting Starmer and Labour Party are a right wing project that won’t improve the country means breaking a lot of illusions and giving up of any hope of reforms. Which is a very difficult and miserable thing to do but it’s also true.

Which

Why are you so fecking miserable and negative about everything, twisting every single event into the most cynically negative narrative possible?

The fashion show thing seems a deliberate focus as it's easier for them to defend than the other 100k he's taken as bribes/donations.

If it was Boris no one here would be defending such donations. If you find yourself defending Starmer or staying silent for the same or worse donations you really need to question if you're just playing panto rules.

I agree with your first point, very stupid of Starmer to not be more aware. However in relation to Simon Case, how he is still in a role is beyond me. Nowhere near good enough to be Cabinet Secretary.

Couldn't really care less about the fashion show thing to be honest. What a ridiculous non story.

The gifts for Starmer though and the interview posted above are depressing. These should be challenged, just as we challenged it on the other side.

Jesus christ. Marginally better than Sunak trying to make out his was a typical lower middle class upbringing which became more due to sheer hard work.....

But what is the obsession in this country with everyone making out they were self made and from a working class background, working the coal lines etc etc?

@Pexbo, make sure you book time in your diary.

What on earth does anyone involved in that show think any viewer will gain from this?

You can't learn anything here, anything difficult and he lies, openly, and they never call him on it.

The only thing it can possible do is help him publicise his new business, which would be a breach of BBC rules.

I remember someone here giving a lesson on how great sir Kid Starver is compared to us for all the human rights work he has done as a lawyer.

Corrupt that takes bribes. Disgusting politician.

It will purely be for his benefit, new book. Laura K will be up his arse as usual. No idea why the BBC think this is a good idea.
