Westminster Politics 2024-2029

RR SMR is British technology, created and built in the UK, not sure where France or China come in to play - https://www.rolls-royce-smr.com/ - if this is to be believed it's way ahead of it's European counterparts
Yeah, it's created to go in nuclear subs, and has never been used here to supply domestic energy. So we need assistance and often funding/deals made with the likes of EDF to manage and construct.

Edit: also, if you read that website, all they can promise is that at some point soon, they're hoping to make working prototypes. As in, it doesn't currently exist in a working state.

I think its more of a case of Tory voters finally realising their party is shafting them and they then using the line 'Oh it would be worse under Labour or no better' then saying there are disillusioned with politics to get them out of having to backtrack from their decisions. It's voters such as this who are responsible for the mess of this country.
Bang on.

Given we've never built one, almost certainly yes. Add the inevitable local opposition like we saw with cracking sites and are seeing with solar farms, and it would easily take a decade till the plan turned into a reality.

We also don't have the skills here in the workforce, so we'd have to involve France or China or Korea, who have plenty of their own projects to work on.

What??
Firstly the RR SMR has been largely developed from their submarine nuclear reactors and is, in the main a scaling up exercise and most certainly not requiring French or Chinese or Korean involvement.

Secondly, we have already seen what a balls up the new Hinckley nuclear power station is..... being built by EDF and funded by China. Massively late and massively over budget.

Both you know that already or at least should do.

I'm not sure about the local opposition, I've seen reports in the past that people around Sellafield and Anglesey would welcome a new reactor as so much of the area around depends on the sites economically. I guess new reactors would be better placed in the home counties, which would be problem, but I don't think sites for development would be. And if power is transmitted between countries I imagine it could be done better within the UK as well.

There's a definite lack of the can-do attitude in the UK, it needs changing.

Now I know you are joking.... EDF assistance.

Yes, like at Hinkley C, which is underway. Why do you think we got them in in the first place, offering double the £/kWh for all the energy on top of the £20bn costs? Because we don't have the workers or skills domestically.

These are not like existing nuclear plants, they are small and modular and we're probably talking about dozens of them scattered all over, this AI centre they keep talking about would probably have one just of them, that's why the likes of Google and Microsoft are interested in them, albeit not specifically RR ones

You say that as if EDF is providing their own workers. When in point of fact the vast majority of those thousands of workers on the site have been recruited locally.
And I know some people who are working there. And what they tell me is far from encouraging.

But don't take it from me. Check out how over budget and massively late this project is. No wonder the government is stalling the decision on whether to proceed with the next one at Sizewell.

I know, all that, I'm using that as an example of how bad an idea pursuing nuclear power is. Because at the moment, SMRs are theoretical, untested and a long way off being okayed for use. If and when they are, I imagine nothing will have changed in terms of skills built up and lessons learned or who the government will choose partner with to build and operate them.

Of course most labourers are local, but the operation and management of it all is French-based. Because we outsource everything like that to foreign firms.

I think we all know the size of them, that's why I said there are sites for development and transmission would be needed. They wouldn't have to be right next to the use, it would be better but not the only way.

Not strictly true, there are 2 built and in use, just not in the west
